I took my ill cat in there because they were open on the weekend & my regular vet was closed. First let me say I have a dog with epilepsy so I have spent a lot of time in vets offices & with vets. When we went to Minton Animal Hospital we saw Dr. J. Scott Hemenway. My cat has a runny nose, crud in his eyes, soft wet stools but not diarrhea, he got sick 1 time, & he's been laying around since then which is very unusual. Because my cat is only 9 weeks old & 1.5 pounds I was very worried about him & they knew it. Dr. Hemenway did his very quick exam which consisted of running his finger over his ears to make it look like he looked in them, but I know he didnt really looked inside there is no way he didnt even open up the cats ear & look inside it. ALL the vets I have ever been to look inside animals ears with a magnifying instrument but Dr. Hemenway did not. He then picked up my cat & gave him a quick look, fluffed the hair on his back then put him on the ground to see him walk. My cat was walking low to the ground kind of checking out his surroundings, obviously scared. The vet asked me if my cat always shakes when he walks. Are you kidding me? I told him no & that I think he is just scared. I got the feeling that Dr. Hemenway was going through the motions of checking the cat out but had the intentions the whole time of suggesting testing. After the 2 minute exam that was done Dr. Hemenway told me that there could be no real way of telling whats wrong with him w/out diagnostic testing, & he would have an estimate drawn up. Then he said if we don't find out what wrong with him it could be really bad. Then he left the room. I stood there feeling like if I do something my baby could die. I got scared thinking of how much this is going to cost. They came back with an outrageous estimate for blood work to test for FeLV, Bartonella, & aids. X-rays to check for something lodged in his track, scaring me with dehydration because hes so small (I said soft stools not diarrhea), you name it & they probably said it.
I decided to not do any of the very expensive testing & go with the conservative treatment. They made me feel even worse because hes just so small & can get dehydrated so quickly. Did I forget to mention my cat drinks water like a sponge, AND he does NOT have diarrhea just soft stools. They gave me 3 metronidazole 50 mg tablets for $19 & put him on a very bland diet of i/d Hills Canned food for a few days at $2 a can then gradually go back to his regular food over a two week period. OH but I can always just pop-in for more food when I need it.
I looked at my bill & saw that they charged me $21 to collect a stool sample. I asked why they charged me that because I brought in the same they didnt collect it. The lady told me that was a standard fee. I said even though there is a charge here to test the sample also? She said yep. Then I asked why they didn't give him antibiotics & the nurse said because he isnt sick. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I asked why they would think he isnt sick when he has a runny nose, crud in his eyes, soft bowels & he VOMITED. She told me he would have to have a fever to be sick.??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!
I took him to my vet asap where he was treated for an upper resp infection and given antiabotics.
PLEASE DONT EVER GO TO THIS VET.

To--I want my money back (above), you are gonna have to go take a chill pill and lie down for a while honey. I'm not going to defend this Dr. Hemenway (I dont know the guy and have never met him) but my father is a veterinarian--I grew up in the back of his vet clinic watching exams after school as a kid for years and plan to be a vet myself and it's sad to say that fools like you are the only ones that cause any real grief in the field. I'm not here to insult you--only to give it a shot at this vain attempt to teach you some sense.
1) Vommiting does not mean your animal in sick dear--all they have to do is eat some plants, or bugs or any other lovely smelling gunk out in your yard to do that.
2) Loose or soft stool is typically a fist sign of either stress, they ate something they shouldnt have(this always happens when you switch basically any animal over to a new type of food), or any other factor--soft stool in itself is not at all serious.
3) As for the crud in his eyes and the runny nose, that is something you should trust the vet to inform you about. It could be a sign of sickness or a sign that he has allergies and the pollen season has started up so he got the sniffles.
Honestly honey I just get annoyed when people like you try to blow up a situation into proportions the size of a mountain when it was probably nothing to begin with. Why you thought it was such an emergency that you decided to wait until Saturday and rush him to a different vet is beyond me, but obviously he wasn't sick enough for it to have been something that couldn't have waited for your regular poor vet to treat on the following monday. On top of that, you folks seem to want to take the liberty upon yourselves to then go about trashing other people and blaming them for your problems--all vets are required to go to school for EIGHT years. If you want to go spend a half million dollars for that kind of education THEN you may have the liberty of telling people how to do their jobs, but not BEFORE. So go grow up, pout in the corner for a while, and get over yourself because you are not the center of the world and yelling about things you don't understand so you can get attention is not the way to live--you should have learned that when you were a kid.

Scott Hemenway, owner and vet, came to my home and assaulted me for what he claimed was a $59 balance on a $1000 debt. He assaulted me on my doorstep. Scott Hemenway, came to my home and assaulted me. He is the vet we have owed 1000$ to for about three years. We got the bill down to just under $360. I had called and asked if $300 could pay off the debt and was told yes. I continued to get billed. I returned them unopened. Mr. Hemenway came to my home and on my doorstep took his bill and shoved it into my chest and screamed at me that there was something wrong with my mail service. I was terrified. I had no idea if this man had a weapon. I am in fear of this man, and I have every reason to believe if he would drive over 20 miles one way with the intent to do what he did, it is reasonable to question any of his behavior. I mailed $75 check demanding no more contact, and they cashed the check and sent me a hand written letter with no return address to thank me for my payment in full, and how much they appreciated that I had paid in full. I paid in full with the $300 accord and satisfaction. When we first incurred the $1000 debt, we brought the business three pieces of my artwork. I am an artist. We gave this as collateral and valued it at $250. With only $59 left owed, or so he thought, and with $250 of my property as collateral, which when I paid the $300 left as an interest "gift" even though they charged me interest. Even with this as true and correct, this man decided the best way to handle this was to assault me at my home. Over $59 of a $1000 bill, this so called business man doctor used hit man practices to collect what he perceived owed him, and I think ALL of us should know that. In the end, he accepted the over payment, and that certainly says a lot, but I think, though, the most disturbing part of this has got to be: This man brought his adolescent son with him on his assault. How does that car conversation go, exactly? I was, and I feel, violated.
