I lived in Spokane area and left in spring of 1976. I remember prior to leaving, a young female newspaper carrier was murdered and her body found in garbage sacks.(May or June 1976) I never heard if this case was resolved. Was this crime related to any other murders and were books or articles published in regard to this event? I've been away over 30 years and heve been curious about the outcome of the case. Thank you.

I remember this so well. I had a 12 year old daughter at the time and I was in the SCC nursing program doing my rotation at Valley Hospital. It freaked me out because during the days that the girl was missing we were driving right by Dollar road on Trent where the house was located. This guy who killed and raped that little girl was the son of a man who owned a well known print shop on Spague Avenue near downtown. He had called the police about some complaint (or maybe it was his landlord) and while there the police man spotted some pictures on his mantle and realized they were pictures of the girl, posed after she had died. My heart just ached for this little girl and the terror and pain she must have experiened before he killed her. And I though how that could have been my daughter. Needless to say, we were not as safe in Spokane as I thought. We know that now today but then we thought we were safe. He was a sick puppy and hopefully he is still locked up.

Speaking of old Murders in Spokane, does any one remember the nurse that disappeared on her way to work at Deaconess Hospital in the NICU in 1977? I believe her husband was a disc jockey for a radio station in Spokane. I remember this because I was working at Deaconess at that time. Her car was found parked down the street in the area I parked and every day I would look at the apartments around there and wonder who grabbed her off the street. It was scarry.... For awhile they suspected her husband but nothing came of it. Was this ever solved? Was her body found? Or is she still missing?

Just out of curiosity, in what way would "Spokane Police Abuses" help find information on an old murder? Just curious.

I'm glad I could be of assistance. That's a kind gesture to create a place that might help people that are researching history. Thank you.

Sharonni,

Thanks for going into more detail concerning the tragedy that befell poor Nanette Martin. I was eleven years old when this happened and I too will never forget her name or the panic that spread for days even after her body was found. That was the first time in my life that I realized there really were monsters living among us. The hell she must have experienced still haunts me, the rape, the torture and the final act of a psycho, dismembering her body and dumping it over a two mile radius, I really think they should have tortured him under the same fashion. May he spend eternity in Hell and may God forgive me for feeling this way.

She was one of my best friends. I will never forget the feeling I had when the police showed up at my house looking for her. At that time she was missing. it was (still is) very difficult and life altering to hear news reports of how she died and was found. I still miss her......

I am her cousin, her dad, my uncle. Nannette and her sister Lori were my best friends and we spent a lot of time togeather. She was and is loved and always missed. I think of her often. I think of her family, my family and am sad for their pain, that never abates.
The P.O.S. that took her life has not had to pay the same price although he is still behind bars. There is always hope.
I wish there was a way to make things like this to never happen again, I wish there was a way to repair the past, life, good and not so, must go on.
Love to Nannette and her family
Sincerely,
Marty

I will never forget this horrible crime, I lived a few houses from where the crime took place. I remember waking up one morning and seeing men dressed in white from head to toe going through my garbage in the alley bedhind my house. When I asked what they were doing they only asked questions and gave no answers in return. Then shortly after this the story unfolded. I remember speaking with Mr. Marht on a few occasions when I would walk to a friends house, if my memory serves me right, I believe he had a young son, because my son who was two at the time, wanted to stop and play. I remember that he took polaroid pictures of the girl and the horrible things he did to her and that was how he was discovered. We moved away shortly after this. I will never forget Nanette Martin and Candy Rogers or their families.

I live in GA now but was born and raised in Spokane. I have never forgotten that child's name. She also was in my brother's English class. That was so horrible.
