Ricky we're all sad. My condolences to the boy's family on their horrific loss. Nothing worse than burying a child, especially at 8 years old. It's just unfathomable.
sorry

I really think when the school's are all off on mid- winter break they should disinfect all the classroom's and desks and the halls, And also too they should really disinfect all the school buse's too. Also too when kid's are sick Parent's should keep their kid's home from school becaause they are infecting other people with their germs too. When kid's are home sick you should not bring your child into a supermaket because they can get other people sick and contamit the food.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this little boy.How sad to hear about a child as young as 8 yrs old dying from this. I don't understand how 3 people in less than a month have died from this illness?

The new "Green Cleaning" law is leaving our schools dirty! The idiots decided that after 100 years we can no longer use chlorine to disinfect the schools. Stupid! whatever the risks associated with chlorine are outweighed by the potential for infection from disease such as menengitis or in the fall, bacterial and fungal skin ifections. Get rid of the Green cleaing law!

Handwashing was not a part of the household. Parents should be refered to Child services for diciplinary action immediately!!!

Truly sad-the question is, was this child up to date with his mandatory vaccinations? Vaccination for meningitis became mandatory approx. 10 years ago. It has now become either recommended or mandatory for college students as well. The explaination for the 3 cases in the past month-27 year old never vaccinated, 19 year old not away to college(?)-never vaccinated(?). 8 year old-not current with mandated vaccinations(?). Vaccines save lives. If this is the case, his death is that more tragic! God rest his little soul and god bless his family in their grief.

Hey little brain, the meneigitis vaccine doesn't protect against all strains of meningitis. You could be vacinated and still get meningitis. You could wash your hands, disinfect the entire school, the kid still could have contracted meningitis.

<quoted text>
You are correct,the efficacy of vaccines vary and do not prevent all cases of disease,thus other forms of infectious disease protocol should be followed(i.e. hand washing,disinfecting surfaces). The point of my post-in this age of infectious disease prevention-it is quite possible that those indiviuals were more susceptible because they were never vaccinated. BTW, the name calling is very childish. This lttle brain has earned a B.S.,M.S.(Microbiology), AND a Medical Doctorate-#4 out of 139. I have it all baby. Had you left the little brain comment out, you and your statement could have brought public awareness to some important healthcare issues facing all of us. You blew it.

How inaccurate? Pneumococcal conjugate, and Haemophilus influenza Type b(Hib) vaccines are mandated vaccinations for all children when they register for public school(unless you know something I don't-please share). Streptococcus pneumoniae is the LEADING cause of bacterial meningitis in the U.S. and Haemophilus is/was the second leading cause in chidren under 5 years. I am not aware if Neisseria genus is covered by either vaccine, but accounts for approx. 5% of cases.(Last I read). Please share your information with us. These forums should be utilized for education and information sharing. It will make the crazy world a nicer,safer place for us all to peacefully cohabitate,LOL.

Oops, I forgot to mention the meningococcal vaccine-not mandatory, but recommended for 11 y/o-adults if traveling,college bound living in dorms,etc. Check with your physician if you should be vaccinated.

Neither are mandated to register for kindergarten or new school system for that matter. Hib is only required if the child is in day care, Head Start, nursery school, pre-k. Once they get to kindergarten and if they haven't had the Hib vaccine, they can come in the front door. Pneumococcal is not even addressed so therefore, it's not mandated. I checked the NYS requirements to see if they are any different than the two states I worked in regarding immunizations. They're the same.

Evidently PBL doesn't quite "have it all." Except the arrogance.
