Some oppose renaming Patchogue school for war hero

In the South Shore community of Patchogue, where American flags often fly from front-porch rails, an effort to rename a high school after a 1994 graduate who was granted the nation's highest military honor ...

I think the father is out of line. I'm sorry for his loss BUT the community gets to decide WHO they should honor.

There is something to be said about being humble and modest. Mr. Murphy has to stop requesting honors for his son and just be darn appreciative that his community thought enough to name a street and a post office after his son. I find his arrogance to be disturbing and a greater insult to his son's memory than the issue that he is running around crying about.

i think the school names should stand as they are. no disrepect to Mr Murphys family .however i think that a beach/park or library is fine for that. i think the schools names should be left alone. perhaps the family can buy a piece of land and build a park in his memory. that i think would show an utmost amount of respect if that is what they are looking for.

Where do we draw the line? Truth be told this guy did nothing more then thousands of other American servicemembers. Wow big deal, he called for help when the team was surrounded ... isent that what a leader is supposed to do?

If anyone deserved the MOH it was the one guy who survived.

I agree with Nick. Though this is a tragic story, let your son rest in peace already. It seems that the family is making it all about them at this point.

The serviceman was a hero. No doubt about it. A building or two named after hime is great. I am sorry for the family's loss, but unfortantely there will be more hero's in the future. Enough already and rest in peace.

Trust me, Mike, the feeling is mutual. And I'm as against this war as anyone, but don't take it out on the guys whom we ask to go over there. Not their fault.

I agree with you a Park in his name would be more memorable and appreciated.

Michael Murphy's father said the school board would first have to agree that the high school would never be renamed in someone else's honor.

"The question comes if they decide to name the high school after a former superintendent, does he sit on the same plateau or a plane equal to Michael?" Murphy said. "I told the board that except for naming the high school after a president, it would do a disservice to Michael's memory."

Never? I mean no disrespect for the ultimate sacrifice this soldier made, but if we flash forward 50 years would this district be prohibited from renaming the school after someone else who contributed and/or sacrificed for the community?

What is going on with you guys?? There was a whole thread already going about this topic last night. Where are those posts?? I don't see one person in these 12 posts that was here yesterday. This isn't the first time I've seen this. What is your major malfunction? Those posts were just as important as the ones above. Newsday, stop eradicating posts willy-nilly. If you open up a forum, let it be. Free speech!

What's the problem? You all should get down and kiss the ground Murphy walked on.
Maybe if your kids had more heroes like Murphy to emulate they woulddn't follow in the footsteps of these phony steroid taking sports heroes.
No one complains when another school or public facility is named after Dr. Martin Luther King.
If I had my way I'd change the name of the town to "Murphy".

The liberals on Long Island just make me sick!! If it wasn't Mr Murphy and others like him who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, who knows what language we will be speaking today. May a liberal die today, it's views like this that make you undeserving of the gift of life!

The people on this blog need to get their facts STRAIGHT!!
1. Michael Murphy did not invade Irag or Afghanistan. President Bush dicided to enter into the Middle East supported by an ACT OF CONGRESS. If you are looking for someone to direct your anger at, look at the people who represent you.
2. It was NOT Mr. Muprhy who proposed this idea, but proud and grateful community members. We are proud of our local hero and grateful for his sacrifice.
3. This is in no way a movement to disprespect any other service men and women who have proudly and courageously served our country. It is not trying to be disrespectful to any other service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is only a movement to honor the only one who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
4. As far as disrespecting other veterans, several different veterans organizations representing veterans from WWII through the current conflict have come out in support of this movement. They have not been insulted by this movement, but rather viewed it as the communtiy coming together and recognizing the importance of supporting our troops and veterans. They view Michael as their representative.
5.The greatest problem here is that people DO NOT comprehend what the Medal of Honor is. Veterans understand this which is why so many have come out in support of the name change.
6.The post office name change was decided by Congress, NOT the PM Community. The park dedication was decided by the Town of Brookhaven NOT the PM Community. Now it is our turn to properly recognize him.
7. This is not a movement support the current administration in DC nor is it a statement about war. People who support our troops and have family members serving DO NOT LIKE WAR. We hope for peace so our family can return home. I have never met a veteran who said they like war, athough sometimes they may say, "War is necessary."
8. If you don't like the idea, how about you show up at the next meeting where you have the right to assemble and petition and speak there. Just a reminder, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASSEMBLE AND PETITION BEACUSE OF BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN LIKE MICHAEL. THANK YOU VETERANS, GOD BLESS THE TROOPS. LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT..MOVE TO FRANCE, THEY LET ANYONE LIVE THERE.
