A major coastal storm is possible around Dec 20th. Will we get storm surge and/or major coastal flooding? We need to follow this very closely. For sure we will see a change in the pattern before Christmas with colder and stormier weather coming.
"FINALLY...AS NOTED BY THE PREVIOUS SHIFT WILL HAVE TO KEEP A CLOSE
EYE ON HIGH TIDES EARLY NEXT WEEK. IF WE DO END UP WITH A STRONG
COASTAL STORM...AT LEAST SOME MINOR COASTAL FLOODING/BEACH EROSION
COULD BE A CONCERN ALONG EAST FACING BEACHES."

"Our forecast tools continue to show the potential for several storm systems that could track from the South to the East from next week through the holiday.
According to AccuWeather.com Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, "There could be one storm or three, but the truth is just as some people may think there isn't going to be a white Christmas, we could have a storm develop right before the holiday to bring millions of people a nice surprise for the holiday."

"THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR A STRONG COASTAL STORM EARLY TO MID NEXT
WEEK. THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF UNCERTAINTY IN THE EVOLUTION OF THIS
SYSTEM AT THIS POINT...BUT THE THREAT EXISTS FOR A HEAVY RAIN OR
WINTRY PRECIPITATION...STRONG WIND...AND COASTAL FLOODING EVENT."

Riveria Drive is underwater. We still have 1 hour until high tide. If you live by the water, please post how your tides are in Mastic Beach. This is not a good sign for the rest of the winter folks.Hope everybody is doing OK.

Very high tides today (good call BTW).Starting to see that it does not matter if the wind blows strongly from the east or west (as it is today)that the bay gets really high tides. The breach's on the barrier island are contributing significantly to this effect. Fire islands back has been broken, at least three new washovers from last nights storm.

Bay water is still rising on the south end of Mastic Beach. We are in trouble. The NWS only called for a possible 2 foot tide. Hate to see what 3-4 foot will bring us here.

We are in bad shape, there can be no doubt now. Are you saying three new washovers since yesterday? That would be huge news, as it means there really is no more Fire Island as we knew it before Sandy.

Thats what I'm saying. I walked only about a half mile there today, so there easily could be many more.

You have to remember though, If the rest of the winter is somewhat mild, these things can close themselves up

Wow. Major news there. Thanks for the first hand update Whoop.
From what I can see, the water is now just a few inches less than what we got from Irene. Looks like it stopped coming in. Not sure.

Fire Island has been broken. Not sure if breaches being open or closed even matter anymore. Seems like the ocean can breach at will now.

Anyone see the waves breaking over Smith's Point. I was out yesterday & took video. They could be seen from down at the end of Lincoln & Riviera.....a second spot @ the end of Whittier & Riviera. It's heart breaking...they need to do something to close the breeches. My parents have been here 34 years & that's the FIRST time you could see the waves breaking on Smith's Point while standing in Mastic Beach.:-(

I'm working until 12 tonight. Can anyone keep me posted on the weather and/or flooding? I think high tide is around 10:00 tonight. Thanks!

6:18 p.m. is high tide tonight at the Moriches Coast Guard Station. Our concern will be the high tide tomorrow morning which is 6:31 a.m.. In addition we have possible wind gusts to 60 mph overnight. Good luck all.Hopefully this will move quick and not be as bad as Fridays tide.Be prepared as we could have some bad flooding and/or even storm surge. Wind is picking up right now.

TY for the updates. The wind is extremely bad here and the sleet has turned to rain. Hopefully it eases up soon!
