So, where are you certified in accident reconstruction? Or maybe you're a medical examiner? You must have some expertise in the dynamics and physics or automobile collisions to be able to make this statement. Or are you just another idiot Newsday blogger who likes to write about things you know nothing about? Do you have anything at all to back up your claim that this girl would have survived but for the fact that there were four people in the back set? Or are you just making it up?
So nice of you to respond. Iím not an accident reconstruction specialist although I somehow learned a lot about cars. Must have been from fixing all the wrecks and dealing with adjusters and inspectors. Iím not a medical examiner either. I did take some courses (anatomy & physiology) to kill time while studying engineering (one of my disciplines). If I remember correctly, we learned a heck of a lot of physics. By the way, dynamics is a topic within physics, so for you to say dynamics and physics was incorrect, but thatís okay.
First of all, I never stated that she would have survived just that she might have survived. I believe that if there was more room the impact directly to her would have been much less. What I heard (from police and a DOT inspector) is she was on the side that took the impact. Just for giggles the rear shoulder room of a 1997 s-class sedan is 52 1/4 inches (I looked that up). An average child of 12 years old has shoulders about 13 inches across (yes, I measured a 12 year old). Add clothing and we quickly see that they were packed in there.
Four people in the back seat is not only against the law, itís dangerous.
I hope I have satisfactorily backed my opinion. If time allowed, I would have done more (get speed at time of impact, mass of vehicles, all that good stuff). I do not speak of things I canít back up like many others, but you may not like when I just state an opinion.
Enjoy whatís left of the weekend and be safe.

If there aren't four seat belts in the back of the sedan, which I'm sure there weren't, then why were there four girls in the back seat? That was irresponsible on the part of the driver of the Saturn also. While I'm sure that it was overlooked and the girls were anxious to go see their movie, there's a reason for these laws. My sympathy to all those in that car that day along with their families but the driver also acted irresponsibly.

It's almost like the case where the NYC cop got little time for killing her partner in a DWI. Because her partner knew what she was doing by getting into the car with someone who had been drinking and she knew the consequences. This Catalano guy's lawyer will argue the same. Maybe if the little girl was in a seat belt (she may have been), then that may have saved her life. The driver of the sedan knew the compromising position she was putting the young girls in by allowing them to ride in the back where there weren't enough seat belts. The other driver should do quite a bit of time but not for murder. Let's all be accountable for our actions.

Your audacity is amazing. YOU think kids this age should be home asleep? Who do you think you are? You act as if you are the authority on these matters. I wish people like you were more concerned with the Stephen Catalanos of this world instead of innocent kids.
I kept my 3 kids out til 1am to go see a Knicks game. My youngest is 9 y/o. OMG!! Does that make me a bad parent? Why don't you try minding your own business?
I was corrected about my error with the time. 12:18PM is just fine for children to be awake. 12:18PM on a weeknight is another thing entirely(I think this accident was Tuesday). Iím glad you notice my audacious quality. I am concerned about people like Cantalano. I said heís a dipshit.
I donít think the occasional ball game on a weekend night is anything like keeping children out late on a school night. Why bring Object Management Group into this (OMG). Why donít you try reading the corrected post I left instead of chucking a hissy-fit like a little girl over the old one.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend. I have some cold beer with my name on it. Iím hanging up the car keys.

it was a freak accident, it could have happend to anyone... is it worse that Angelica Nappi died at 14, yes but it could have been anyone in that situation. And even if there was 4 seatbelts back there, i dont think anyone gets into the backseat of a car and says i think some idiot is going to crash into us on the way to the movies tonight. it was a terrible thing that happened, but it could have been anyone, wheather their was 3 or 4 people in the back seat, so you really cant blame it on the ages of the kids.

Oh, c'mon now you stupid a s s hole. I happen to be an American patriot who is fed up with this invasion. I also happen to be a woman who is white as the driven snow.
That having been said, I also state the following. This person should be tried for murder as far as I am concerned. My sympathy goes out to the family of the child who died.
For you to state that I as an American patriot thought only hispanics got into accidents or committed murder is ludicrous.
You are a fool!!
Thanks for having a brain and having the guts to say so!! This child is gone because someone was stupid and selfish. My heart goes out to her family. I saw the accident. It was horrific. No parent should have to go thru this. Rest in peace.

When everything becomes reduced to race, that is over the edge. It's pretty sad when even the death of a child falls into that category.

I think that regardless of whether the girls were in seatbelts, the other driver should be held responsible for his own actions. But for the fact that his car colided with the girls' car, none of the girls would have been injured. He should go to jail.

This is very sad. Words can not express how sorry everyone is for this loss. Our prayers are with you and may you find peace during this hard time. Dawn is a very special teacher who is loved by many. That said, I pray that this man is convicted of murder. He destroyed the lives of many and does not deserve to ever see the light of day again! Someone with power please help make this man suffer. He should never have the right to drive again. We need to do more random police searches to be sure drivers are legal, without prior convictions. Please God hear our prayers and lock this man up! Put no mercy on his soul!! God Please please bless this family and all who suffer from such a traggic loss. bless all of you now and always.... sisters forever ;[

deitrick haddon: AFTERWHILE

Spoken: I dedicate this song to all those
who have lost loved ones
along the way. If we hold on
we'll gonna see them again after while.

How can I forget the times you held my hand
and wipe the tears from my eyes
How can I forget oh yeah
that when I needed someone
you were right by my side
I know you had to be an angel in the skies
sent from God to bring joy to my life
And now you are gone back home
and I want you to know

Chorus:
I still hear your voice
I still feel your touch
and when I close my eyes
I can see your smile
though you're gone away to a better place
I can't wait to be with you
after while
ooh after while.

Sometimes I break down
but I accept God's will
in spite of the way I feel
Sometimes I wish that I
I wish that I
I could take your place
You should not have gone that way
but I know you were an angel in the skies
sent from God
to bring joy to my life

Hereís your 10. Thanks Newsday for having multiple stories.
Stephen Catalano, Mark Cutino and Edward Rohrbach in a Jeep.
Rachel Williams, Angelica Nappi, Nicolette Nappi, Brittany Combs, Tanisha Combs and Tesheara Fields in a Saturn.
Giuseppe Lucchese in a Pontiac.
Six people in a Saturn bothers me. Had they not been packed side-by-side in the back of a small car I think this girl might have survived. What also bothers me is that some of the children should have been home sleeping and not going out to a late movie. 11, 12, 13, and 14 is too young for late night excursions. Catalano is still a dipshit, but I still think something should be done to Williams.
well welll wellll...CLEARLY, you have no brain! fist of all if you payed any attention in school you would know that 12pm is "daylight".

you might want to some research on this considering you WEREN'T a witness to anything unlike ME.

there was no room for error, seatbelt or not
[ALTHOUGH MY SISTER AND I HAD IT ON].
Angelica had no chance in surviving.
We can thank our legal system and all these fools that don't think drinking/drugging while driving laws are necessary...
but UNTIL someone in in THEIR family dies because of some selfish person on the road then we might get some kind of law and actually stick to it.

*IF YOU HAVE ALCHOHOL OR DRUGS IN YOUR SYSTEM WHILE DRIVING YOU SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY BE ARRESTED & ACCUSED OF BREAKING THE LAW. NO MATTER THE AMOUNT IN YOUR SYSTEM,...
*YOU BROKE THE LAW , PERIOD*

*OUR LAWS ONLY PROTECT CRIMINALS AND MURDERERS.*

people make me sick. 14 years old and i feel this way.* we really arent protected, we are living in an unsafe world. so why dont we all just worry every time we get inside a car. why dont we just worry about the person driving next to us and what stupid move they will make. why dont YOU WORRY about your children being in a car?

*if our laws dont change this is only going to get worse*

All of you should stop the stupidity! A child is dead and because of that man's driving.AND HE PROBABLY SHOULD'T HAVE A LICENSE!I knew this girl and her family and the sadness is overwhelming. May this NEVER happen to any of you.
