Motorcyclist hit by van in HOV lane of LIE

A motorcyclist was seriously injured on the Long Island Expressway in Holbrook Wednesday when a van swerved into his lane and hit his bike, the Suffolk police said. via Newsday.com

once again a motorcyclist doing the right thing was hit by an idiot on the road.
people do not see where they are going or what they are doing when they are driving. the only thing that matters is that we are always in front of anyone behind us and we always have the right of way no matter what the signs or common sense tells you.
if someone is a car that's smaller or even a motorcycle, then we have no problem getting in front of them.
no we have a moron who was alone in his van but just had to get onto the HOV. why? because it's normally faster.
but he didn't give a dam about looking before make a move. and the fact that he failed to hear a harley tells me that he either had the radio too loud, was listening to an IPOD or was talking on the cell phone.
this is a guy that deserves nothing less then a burial plot.
i hope and pray Steven Johnson fully recovers.

Why is a motorcycle in the HOV lane to begin with?!?! HOV = HIGH OCCUPANCY VEHICLE. Last time I checked, a motorcycle wasn't high occupancy.

Not only was the LIE backed up for miles. but so was the service road and EVERY other road within a 5 mile radius of the accident.The roads around the LIE are not capable of handling the traffic in a situation like this. Closing the ENTIRE 4 lanes of traffic should not be done.It is a hazard to everyone else on the road as people begin to take things into their own hands. I couldnt even count how many people were exiting the wrong way down the ON ramps because there was no where else to go. This is absolutely absurd.

Um excuse me, but motorcycles and clean pass vehicles are allowed in the HOV lane as well regardless of how many occupants there are. The problem is the COMPLETE IDIOTS who cross the divider illegally because they cant deal with the traffic.

next time your on the LIE take a look at the signs.
motorcycles are allowed on the HOV because of butt head drivers on the main highway. it's a safer place to ride.
they also conserve gas much more then anything else on the road. hybrids included. which by the way are now allowed on the HOV lane with only the driver in the car. even during rush hour.
the entire concept of the HOV is to cut down on traffic as well as encourage people to conserve gas by car pooling.
now stop suggesting that the biker in this story was wrong in anyway shape or form.

Where did it say he wanted to get into the HOV or that he was jockeying for position? He was probably on the cell phone or looking elsewhere and veered into the lane.

Well if you knew the laws you'd know that motorcycles are aloud in the HOV lane.
The roads are Long Island are a very scary place lately....everyone is in such a hurry and usually mulit-tasking while they drive. Everyone needs to slow down and pay attention to what they are doing. Everyday I see impatient people blowing by stopped school buses, running red lights, weaving in and out of traffic and speeding in residential areas......and I think, where are you going that you need to get there so fast? Also if you think you look cool driving recklessly you are sadly mistaken.......lets see how cool you look in the morgue or God forbid standing over a child you have killed because of your carelessness.

First of all the motorcycle was not in the wrong. He was driving the right speed.

Second from what the article says the VAN SWERVED into the HOV.

Third people need to drive like they have some sense. The nice weather is coming so that means more motorcycles, bicylcist, etc. We need to learn to share the road and stop acting like we are the only person on the road.

they closed all four lanes because debris and bodies were strewn all over the road moron....guess you wouldn't mind running over a muffler or a leg as long as you get home on time, huh?

Most HOV lanes around the country permit motorcycle travel. I believe this is true for the LIE. Check the signs. Bottom line is that on the LIE too many people ignore the fact that they must use ONLY the entrances and exits which are clearly marked. And ... a van with a one occupant (the driver) doesn't belong there in the first place. This driver is clearly one who ignores traffic laws and this time his negligence caught up to him. Too bad he had to involve an innocent victim as well.

Motorcycles are allowed in the HOV. Again, this is the reason I don't ride out here. I have a motorcycle that I would rather ride in Manhattan then on Long Island. People on Long Island drive like a-holes.

Motorcycles and Clean Pass vehicles ARE allowed in the HOV lane. You make this statement like you know what you are talking about. If you ever read the sign above the HOV lane you would know that they ARE permitted.
