There are public officials, most notably Supervisor Mark Lesko, who are calling on Town Clerk Pamela Betheil to resign on the basis of her recent arrest, before she has had an opportunity to defend herself. He should know, as a former prosecutor, that all Americans are presumed innocent until proven guilty. He has proved to be just another politician. This is not Iran. This is the United States of America. Women get trials in this country. They are not stoned to death.

Pamela Betheil should not resign as Town Clerk. She has had a long and distinguished public career and she should be given her day in Court. The last blogger is right - "innocent until proven guilty" is the cornerstone of our democracy and our justice system. Has anybody ever explained this to Town Democratic Leader, Marsha Laufer? What about County Democratic Leader Richard Schaeffer who demanded that former
Suffolk County District Attorney, James M. Catterson, be removed for prosecuting members of his Administration when Mr. Schaeffer was Supervisor in Babylon? How quickly they forget!

Brookhaven Town Democratic Leader, Marsha Laufer, has engineered the removal of Pamela Betheil from the Democratic ticket in the 2009 elections. The last time she pulled such a stunt is when she dumped Town Board Member Carol Bissonette from her seat on the Town Council in 2007. As a result of her political malpractice, the Republicans captured the seat and with it, control of Brookhaven Town. Many jobs were lost and good people were sacrificed. Marsha - it is time you retired and went to Florida. You are over the hill in Old Field.

Republican Leader, Jesse Garcia, claims that the recent arrest of Town Clerk, Pamela Betheil, is a problem for the Democrats in view of the fact that former Supervisor Brian Foley knew or should have known about the issue of wedding fees and should haven taken steps to correct the situation.
What about Republican Majority Leader Tim Mazzei? The Republicans have been in contol for two years. What did Mr. Mazzei know and when did he know it? Was he was too busy practicing law to be concerned about Town business? Or was it simply a case of knowing that Mrs. Betheil was not doing anything wrong?

The Democrats want Pamela Betheil to resign as Town Clerk. This would pave the way for the Democrats and Kathy Walsh to appoint Pat Eddington as Town Clerk so that she can run as an incumbent. It would obviousluy vacate Ms. Eddington's Assembly seat and give Supervisor Mark Lesko's pal, Paul Pontierri, Patchogue Village Mayor, a chance to get a head start running for the Assembly. Could it be that Mr. Lesko is the driving force behind the arrest of Mrs. Betheil solely for his own selfish political purposes? If your answer is no, then you probably believe that the earth is flat!

I read in today's Newsday that Brookhaven Democratic Leader, Marsha Laufer and Brookhaven Town Supervisor, Mark Lesko, who are leading the charge against Brookhaven Town Clerk, Pamela Betheil, are themselves being investigated by the suopporters of County Legislator candidate Carol Bissonette for submitting fraudulent designating petitions on behalf of Ms. Bissonette's Democratic opponent. Of course, this is just an accusation, which puts them in the same situation as Ms. Betheil - accused, but not convicted of anything. What is so interesting is this: In 2005, Ms. Bissonette was elected to the Town Board as a Democrat, giving the Democrats a 4-3 majority on the Town Board. She was cast aside by Marsha Laufer in 2007 and not permitted to run for re-election. The Democrats lost her seat. The Republicans gained control of the Town. Now Ms Bissonette is running as a Republican in 2009.
Like Mary Shelley's famous story of Baron Von Frankenstein who created the monster, Marsha Laufer has cast herself as Baron Von Frankenstein. She has created her own monster (not an ugly one, mind you) who will com back and extract her revenge. Marsha, have you not learned your lesson? Mrs. Betheil may be in your future as well, and I do not mean playing shuffle board at aretrement home in Florida!

As a member of the Conservative Party, I would urge all Conservatives to speak up on behalf of embattled Town Clerk, Pam Betheil. She is entitled to her day in court, she is entitled to a fair trial and she is "innocent until proven guilty." If the liberals are allowed to continue smearing her, without challenge, they may decide to smear enrolled Conservatives such as Jane Bonner. Why not? They are angry with her for favoring GPS systems for Town vehicles. Liberals are adament that lazy employees and terrorists have their right to privacy. Jane and Pam should not be targets of liberal smears.

I am writing this letter in support of the candidacy of Carol Bissonette for the County Legislature and in support of Town Clerk Pamela J. Betheil. Both of these women are strong and independent women who had the audacity to question Brookhaven Town Leader, Marsha Laufer and she dumped both of them from the town ticket. In the case of dumping Carol in 2007, the Democrats lost contol of the Town Board which they had won only two years earlier. This year by dumping Pam, they have assured themselves of certain defeat at all levels. There is an old rule in politics - NEVER DUMP AN INCUMBENT! Good luck Carol and Good luck Pam. We cannot vote for you in Coram, but we love both of you. Keep fighting

The person who commented on August 21 should be arrested and charged with forging a communication from the Internal Revenue Service. It is not funny. This website should immediately forward the communication to the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. The FBI, the IRS and the Justice Department should be able to track down this person even if they cannot find Osama Bin Laden.

We love you Pam. Hang in there! The country is getting so upset with the policies of President Obama, that the Independent voters may decide to take it out on Mark Lesko and the Democrats in the Town elections. If Supervisor Lesko is afraid that he will be swept out of office, why is he not calling the White House and demanding that President Obama resign? Why is he not calling Governor David Patterson and demanding that he resign? Why is he not calling County Executive Steve Levy and demanding that he resign? Why is he not demanding the resignation of Deputy Supervisor Kathy Walsh so that he can replace her with a real Democrat like Eliot Spitzer? Why is he not demanding that Brookhaven Democratic Leader, Marsha Laufer, resign for dumping Carol Bissonette from the Democratic Ticket in 2007? It could not possibly be that anybody would vote against Mr. Lesko because of his own views and policies. Or, could it?

I agree with with 'Roaring in Roacky Point'we should set that crook in the town clerk's office free to go spend the money she extorted, and arrest Milton Bradly. Go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect 200.00. That about sums it up for me too. It is actually a very sad story. These poor tax paying newlyweds getting shaken down for 200 bucks each, by this shameless creep is awful.Crooked public officials are always a horror, but in such tough economic times, using your public office to defraud taxpayers who are already financially strapped, needs to be dealt with very, very harshly. The taxpayers look to the DA and the IRS to protect us from such ugly thievery. Wouldn't you love to serve on that jury.

Your e-mails may be addressed as coming from Huntington Station, but we know better! You are very bitter about your expreiences in the Brookhaven Town Clerk's Office. We know who you are. Why do you not admit that of all the couples that Pam Betheil married over a period of 3 1/2 years, not one of them is complaining about her. They all love her. The complaint filed with the District Attorney was filed by Mark Lesko as a result of the anonymous letter which we believe was sent by you. You are the crook. That is why you were fired! Admit it! No newlyweds were shaken down. Everybody else, judges and mayors included, wanted to charge more.
You should be praying for forgiveness!

I believe in our Town Clerk, Pamela J. Betheil. She was fist elected to the Longwood School Board in 1973, and served with distinction for 18 years. She served on the New York State School Board's Association for more than 20 years, including two terms as Vice-President and two terms as President. She served on the National School Boards Association for 15 years and has been a Director at BOCES for more than 20. She has been President of BOCES for 10 years. What was her pay for these positions? NONE - Just the reward of knowing that she was helping deliver quality education to all of our children. She served on the Brookhaven Board of Zoning and Appeals (paid) and was Chairperson of the Brookhaven Planning Board for more than 10 years (paid). Newsday honored her in 2002 as an Everyday Hero. She has met and forgotten more public officials than most of us will ever know. She has an outstanding record of achievement and her term as Town Clerk has brought the record keeping systems of the Town into the 21st Century.

The comment posted earlier from the person who alleges to be from Huntington Station is very naiive. If these poor couples who were married by Mr. Betheil cannot afford the $75.00 fee or the alleged $200.00 fee, what are they doing getting married in the first place? The answer is that couples were given high quality wedding ceremonies which is why they recommended Mr. Betheil to their friends.
The records will show couples coming to her from all over, Long Island and New York City, because of the quality of her work. None of them feel they have been cheated. The only people concerning are jealous of her success or have personal vendettas to settle.

To the person who complained about Mrs. Betheil's hair. Her hair is not a 60's bee hive look. Are you sure you are talking about Town Clerk, Pamela J. Betheil? Watch your television more carefully. It has been suggested on another website, that Mark Lesko should dress in drag as Marsha Laufer, and then enter the Miss Fire Island contest to be held in Cherry Grove in September. If he does, you could be his hair stylist.

Imagine if the mailman refused to deliver your mail unless you gave in to his demands for hundreds of dollars in cash? He would be fired, arrested, locked up, and rightfully so. Imagine if the town snowplow guy refused to plow in front of your house unless you forked over hundreds in cash. It would not matter if he did a really really really nice job, he would be fired, arrested and locked up, and rightfully so. Well, she has already been arrested, we are just 'fired' and 'locked up' way from being done with this creep.

"Pam the Scam" does not even understand the basic issues. In 1988, the New York State Legislature, passed a law permitting Town Boards to appoint Marriage Officials in order to handle the growing demand for civil ceremonies. The Town Board has every right to appoint anybody it wants, but almost all of the Towns have chosen to appoint the Town Clerk. The official duties of the Town Clerk does not include performing weddings. The Town can pay a the Town Clerk a stipend for performing the weddings on evenings and weekends, but that means taxpayers pay for weddings. Brookhaven, like most towns, insists that the marriage officials charge a fee so that the cost will be paid by the married couple and not by the taxpayers. All Marriage officials charge fees. Get used to it! Clergyman and Judges charge much more than Mrs. Betheil. Nobody is complaining that Mrs. Betheil charged fees. They are complaining that she overcharged on weddings performed outside of Town Hall at catering halls and homes. That is approximately 100 wedding out of 1300. That is an issue of law to be decided by the courts. Please learn the issues before commenting. Not one couple she married is complaing. They all love her. You should too!
