An impact attenuator, also known as a crash cushion or crash attenuator or cowboy cushions, is a device intended to reduce the damage done to structures, vehicles, and motorists resulting from a motor vehicle collision. Impact attenuators are designed to absorb the errant vehicle's kinetic energy and/or redirect the vehicle away from the hazard, and from roadway machinery or workers.

A Fitch Barrier is a type of impact attenuator which is essentially a plastic barrel filled with sand or water, usually yellow colored with a black lid.

drove thru there today, what ever they are called, the barriers in those zones are way too close together, making the lanes too narrow.I hold my breath every time I drive thru there and I am a good driver.

whatever happened to enforcement of the 55mph zone around Carlisle? You can breeze through there at 70 today and still be passed by every car and truck on the road!

Yeah but if EVERYONE would pay attention we wouldn't have a problem. Not going to happen though!

Yeah and in the construction zone it is 45. I don't know why it isn't enforced anymore, they use to love giving tickets for speeding through there!

Ummm...going north or south? I think Exit 47 is up at Carlisle and this accident didn't happen around the Scotland construction zone, although the same caution pertains to driving through there or anywhere there's construction. If you were talking about the Carlisle area and you drive an alternative route (Rt 11) the whole way to Scotland and then get on the interstate, wow, because during busy times, that's not even realistic.
