I have a 17 y/o Biracial son who just started driving this year. I am concerned that the Allen police are racial profiling out teens.
My son has been pulled over 3 times in the past month. 2 out of those 3 times he was asked to exit the car and the car was searched... he was given no reason for this and was issued no citations. He was made to sit on the side of the road for almost an hour in one of the cases. Now i understand the police stopping a person for traffic violations, but searching cars and scaring our children for not using a turn signal... is this right??
My son is worried every time he leaves the house now he will be harassed by the police. What is this showing our kids?

Tre - I think there may be more to this than you son is telling you. I have lived in Allen for almost 20 years and have never, to my knowledge, found the Allen PD to be anything but professional. In this age of technology they are scrutinized on their every move. I am fairly certain that each of your son's "stops" were videoed and available for review, if necessary. Race must not have nor should have anything to do with "protect and serve".

I appreciate the response. Although you do sound just like the Allen police. Thats exactly what they told me on the phone when i called. I was asked to bring my son in to the station to verify the story, which i did. The story he told was exact.. although they have never been able to produce any videos. So normally i would agree when it comes to any teen, but in this case thats just not so.

I can somewhat relate, with my situation,I was actually pulled over about two weeks for crossing a double white line, the reason was to avoid getting rear ended comming off of 75 mcdermott theres always a line of traffic exiting, and they are not driving to slow down so soon.In hiding was a undercover police car not visual at all,so most folks aren't given a chance to even correct the mistake if you do see a cop,so already it isnt fair
to the locals who are just tryin to run an errand
or trying to get to work, mind you that ticket is 180 dollors to avoid getting hit or out of the way
as quickley as possibe.Did I mentioned I was a black women!out of all the cars you chose me wow!

That seems to be how it works in this great city we live in. I hate to think that a town i have called home for over 15 years targets certain people!!! Its not right.

I had a friend apply to work in Allen as a police officer and they told him he wasn't assertive enough because he didn't feel comfortable with some of the questions on the test and didn't answer them to there liking. Those questions had to do with profiling and he didn't feel they were right. Somethings got to change in this town this is ridiculous.

Im glad that Allen PD is a little harsh on teenagers. I got my share when growing up in Allen. My vehicle was profiled alot and got me pulled over from time to time. But, I learned alot can be avoided by obeying normal traffic laws. Your son can earn alot of respect with cops by showing them respect first. There has to be a reason why a cop pulls him out of a car. I learned quick with North Texas cops that respect the badge and the badge should respect you. I have had my CDL for 4 years now and have driven in 48 states, most cities around are just as equal to allen, in my opinion. BTW, did you ever ask your son to take you for a ride one night and see if you could get pulled over, just a suggestion.

Hate to break it to you but a ticket is a ticket no matter if you are black or white. Why does everything turn racial. White people get tickets to, like one time our family was driving through Lousiana and Officer Mitchell (african american) gave us a ticket for driving 73 in a 65. He gave us a ticket because we broke the law not because we were white. GROW UP AMERICA!!!

i'v been in this town since the big boom of houses and population and from 2000 till now iv seen the police get alot more brutal. i mean cmon people do they really need chargers? thats goverment funding at its worst. i mean ya it helps get the bank robbers but it also means that they take the kids to seriousley. a while back i was sitting at mc'donalds on allen hights and a few cops walk in and search me because they had a report of a black male who they saw purchase drugs...im white. its just ridiciouls. and my friend was pulled over and searched for speeding as well, but their reason for searching his car was because she was seen leaving a drug area, but his mom was in the car with him so they are either really serious or they are really desprate to find the dealers here. we got to remember that allen is one of the highest rated drug towns for extasy in the u.s.

I respect everyone's view here. Unfortunately a few bad apples make life more difficult on the rest of us and we also read more about corrupt police as well. Whether you're a law enforcement fan or not, getting involved in the citizens police academy is a good place for mutual understanding to begin. For the 15 year-old above, some teenagers today are more brutal, dangerous, hostile and apethic about the consequences of their actions than similar 'controlled' adults. At some point it's difficult to tell the good from the bad. Focus on how you can make a difference and hang with people you consider better than yourself.

Allen police department puts young men in JAIL for traffic violations that would at the most only be a citation anywhere else. Case in point: my son was arrested for a wide right turn. He was at the end of Main and turned onto highway 75. He crossed over the white line and was stopped. They also popped him for not changing his address on his driver's license. He was in the process of renovating a house and was living somewhere else temporarily until his house was ready to move into. He stated this to the officers to no avail. I was absolutely incredulous, I thought he was leaving out part of the story when he called me from jail. I called a bail bondsman and he called the jail and was told it not a bondable(?) offense and he confirmed what my son told me. To get him out of jail cost a lot of money. As far as I am concerned, it was extortion. As officers were tied up with this nonsense, how many crimes were committed in Allen New Year weekend? How many assaults, drunk drivers on the road, break ins, etc.? It is ridiculous and dangerous, not to mention irresponsible. The new motto for Allen PD should be: Bullies Behind the Badge.

Its amazing to me how mnay people have so many words to say about the Allen Police. In all fairness i dont think its just a racial issue and i would have never been one to pull a race card trust me ...i am totally against people who use their race as a reason they stay in trouble with the law. I however have seen it first hand with my son and daughter in this fine city. I have been treated with such disrespect from the Allen police dept through all this, that it really makes me question what type of people we have protecting us. This is Allen TX people, we dont live in South Dallas, drug areas?? what the heck.. bad neighborhoods come on.

I am the person that commented on my son getting arrested for a wide right turn in Allen. I would like to point out that race had nothing to do with it; he is a clean cut young man with blonde hair and blue eyes. He does not have multiple tattoos, piercings, etc. In fact, he has none of the above and has a military haircut. His age is key; and he looks much younger than his 21 years. Allen PD discriminates against YOUNG MEN, period. I have respect for police officers and my children were taught to respect police officers. However, when they abuse their authority, they are no better than bullies.

It is not just Allen. Burred headed cops with badges and guns are everywhere. None of these are the danger. It is their attitudes. So many times, many many cops have done whatever it took to get an arrest. It is the attitude that baits innocent people into doing something so they canb e arrested. They are called, "public servants?" I suppose at one time they were jsut that, public servants. Today, they are public nuisances who think of themselves above the law, and act in that manner. There is no respect given law-abiding citizens, families, teenagers. I stopped a watched a Allen policeman line up five teenagers alongside Rt. 5 the other day, as if they were hardened criminals. All appeared to be teenagers, both black and white. I sat and watched the steps he asked ofthem, and I came to the conclusion, if enough is asked of them, at some point and time they will fail one of them so they are arrestable. Cops were once our friends, but not any lon ger. With so much crime, to do what they dfo todaym, is a sin. There are real criminals out there who need a cops attention. Not us, the everyday citizen going about our business just trying to keep up with the daily demands of life. Cops will never learn respect for others, or to give a little when we make a mistake that cost no one a thing, and no one was injured. I have no use for cops, no use for how they violate their ethics to effect an arrest. What an arrogant bunch of people they've become. They are no heroes to me for I have seen enough in my day from behind the scene of emregency rooms and how they treat another human being that has not been found guilty of anything.

allen is absolutely rediculous and i just heard on the news 2 cops got arrested i havent verified it but i wouldnt be surprised if it were for harrasing i am a teen and not gonna lie i have made stupid decisions but i really dont anymore and yet im still scared of being harrassed by them. one of my friends who doesnt drink or anything was leaving a friends house and got her car searched my other friend just got blamed later for a possesion ticket of marijuana which never happened and was proven which could had led to destroying future oppurtunities. 2 of my friends have been arrested for no seat belt and one for jay walking . they have actually followed and harassed some of my friends. i understand if someone shows reason to plausible suspicion and if someone breaks the law then they should get a ticket but like someone said earlier turning left with no blinker or too wide and ending up getting your car searched is rediculous, which has also happened to two of my friends. it never use to be like this ive lived here since i was 2. and i cant wait to leave.

Racism exist, just choose not to look for it. Let's be real. Profiling happens, so if you want to avoid dealing with racist officers (yes they exist), then don't perpetuate stereotypes. I am black for the record. I think that at some point, weather or not racism exists in your potential situation, we (anyone who has issues with police or not) have to obey the basic laws and deal with the cards dealt with respect and reverence. I have only lived here for a year and have had good experiences with the officers here, so I cannot put down any of their habits. I've been pulled over for speeding once and guess what, I WAS SPEEDING. If your rights are violated, you can take this up as a formal complaint. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. KNOW HOW TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD. Timing is everything, so disrespecting an officer is not going to yield positive results. Teach your children to stay within the realms of the law and to come to you if they feel their rights have been violated. If their rights have been violated, work with your child and show them how to voice their concern LEGALLY.

I am fully aware that Allen police officers are harassing their residents. I believe they have become harassers rather than protectors. My 70 year old mother was pulled over because a smidgen of the word ďTexasĒ on her license plate was covered up. Now címon you tell me that an Allen police officer canít tell the difference between a Texas plate and a plate from another state because a smidgen of the word ďTexasĒ is covered up? My 18 year old son was pulled over and given a $220.00 ticket for going 7 miles over the speed limit. I know of a nurse who was given a ticket because her two front tires were touching the solid white line at an intersection. She fought the ticket in court and won however it took time away from her job. I was just speaking to a woman who said she was pulled over 5 times in one month for no reason whatsoever. Iíve heard of a multitude of stories from various Allen residents whom have had similar situations and even situations more stupid than what I have mentioned. I live in an upscale community in West Allen where we only have one entrance/exit into our community. Morning, noon, and night an Allen police officer is sitting in our entrance with a radar gun pointed at cars. We have to sit and wait behind the officer until he/she looks up and notices us waiting behind in order to exit our community. Iíve personally had to wait 5 to 10 minutes and on a couple occasions was late to work because of it. There are also instances where they will have cars pulled over just inside our only entrance and we have to maneuver around them in order to enter our community. Iíve been there for two years and this is a 7 day a week occurrence since Iíve been there. I am seriously considering putting my home on the market for the reason that I feel helpless to do anything about it because I am afraid of retaliation if I should complain. And now the recent incident of the Allen police pulling guns on a mother and her 11 year old daughter Iím not sure I would call that a case of mistaken identity rather than racial profiling. Iím ready to move to another city where I am protected by the police officers for whom I pay taxes for their salaries rather than be harassed by them.

I can understand your frustration at the fact the police in Allen are at some points OVER doing their job, but I want you to keep one thing in mind. Allen was voted one of the safest places to live in the Country. Being one of the safest places to live is a boost to your property value. By profiling (I don't mean racial I mean following trends) officers protect themselves and the area. Officers must learn to discern to be successful and I think they need work to accomplish this. I too live in a West Allen Neighborhood where there is only one entrance, it's called Lexington at Twin Creeks. The residents of this neighborhood drive by so fast, I am scared to get my mail, so I applaud Allen PD for sitting in the neighborhood to save the lives of the children and adults that would otherwise be hurt or injured by negligent drivers. I am against racism, I am against harassment, the officers that drew their guns on the unarmed woman should be disciplined or FIRED for misuse of their authority. My only point is this, sometimes the very thing that protects you can be taken for granted, but if you lose it, it's too late to wish for it back. Support the positive features and voice your opinion about the negative attributes of Allen PD, if they are smart they will adjust or face the public they are being paid to protect. We are in control, just KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!
