Welcome to humboldt county, where animals are more important than people. The DA would rather spend time on this than violence against people.

The thing you must remember is that government employees don't give a hoot about how much of "your" money they spend or how they spend it. It's all about perception. Regardless of how inept they are, government employees at all levels will spare no expense when it comes to demonstrating their authority and contempt over their fellow citizens.

What's at issue here is not a few antique artifacts passed on from on generation to another. It's simply a demonstration by authority to justify the perception of protecting the public by bringing the entire force of a government entity to enforce a law that was created for a special interest group to punish a microscopic group of people who by all other accounts are tax paying law abiding citizens. And by the way, since the other charges were dropped the news media in their continuing effort to influence public opinion can drop the reference to owning or raising these chickens for the purpose of fighting as it applies to Mr. Christie.

Cock fighting is a despicable, illegal activity. People who participate in this act have to be cruel & a little sick. They are similar to the Romans who watched blood "sports" in the colosseum two thousand years ago.

It would be nice if the reporter didn't just say "what" happened but found out "why". Why did seven of the jurors find Ray Christie not guilty?

He had 1,300 roosters & all the knives & fighting & killing equipment. Was the DA incompetant? Did some of these jurors participate in cock fighting & so ignored the law?

he wasn't caught fighting the chickens, just raising them, which is legal. The fighting utensils are illegal to have, so that's the only thing he's guilty of; can't lock him away, yet, for the intent you think he might have.

Well Jeff, all animal abuse is wrong, but perhaps the jury didn't convict because they didn't have evidence that proved beyond a reasonable doubt the crime was committed. Now, that could be because the evidence didn't exist to prove it or the prosecutor didn't know how. Either way, it does not speak well for the DA or his staff.

Agreed.
So I'm wondering if some of these other posters would feel different if their family pets were tortured and killed by someone. Would you expect that crime to not be prosecuted because, after all, they're "just animals"?
The law is the law whether you personally find the cause important or not.

I think most would agree. The problem here is not whether the law is good or bad. The law is the law. The question is whether there was the evidence to prove it or the competence to present it to the jury. That is very different criticism. If they didn't have the evidence then no amount of hating the crime can justify the trial when you can not prove the case. It looks like the jury had a real problem with the lack of evidence presented to them for whatever reason it wasn't presented.

I only think this thing sucks because once again he got away with something. That's how it works for him. That's why he is the person he is and does what he wants, right or wrong, because it doesn't matter to him. Someone will get him out of it.
