Oh No! Not another memorial or monument honoring some esteemed political person or an indicted person for illegal gambling.

Three young men who stole Lulu Orr's 16-foot giraffe statuette out of her family's yard in Shadyside returned it and confessed their guilt to Mrs. Orr and her husband, Prentiss, who made the giraffe 29 years ago.

Mrs. Orr said the men, who were about college-age, had seen a news story about how the theft had upset the Orrs.

Mrs. Orr said the three men rang the Orrs' doorbell about 9 p.m. Sunday, explained the theft and gave back the giraffe.

"They said when they learned what it meant to the family, they felt so badly and they wanted to return it right away."

Mrs. Orr noted that the men could have left without meeting the Orrs.

"They showed responsibility," she said. "I'm very impressed."

Mrs. Orr called police and told them so they "know that it had been returned."

The Orrs are satisfied with the return of the giraffe and police are not pursuing the matter.

The giraffe, which until December was inside, will continue to be outside, though Mrs. Orr said the family will try to secure it "a little bit more" so it doesn't get taken away again.

An attorney for UPMC argued today that if the city of Pittsburgh wants to challenge the medical conglomerate's tax-exempt status, it should first send them a bill.

William Pietragallo, who is representing UPMC in the suit, said the court is not the place for the issue of whether it should pay payroll taxes to be settled. That's a matter for the city treasurer, who's empowered to make that determination and then compel them to pay the taxes, he said.!!!!!!!!

"They have a procedure where the city treasurer could act, could look into this," he said in a hearing before Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge R. Stanton Wettick.

With a catchy name in Whiskey Barrel Flats and a big vision, Bill Stolze is going where no residential developer has gone before -- to the south side of the Monongahela River near Station Square.

Mr. Stolze is planning to convert a former whiskey distillery at South Second and McKean streets into a condominium complex with 10 to 13 units, a private bar for residents and a rooftop deck with commanding views of the Downtown skyline.

He'll be the first to test the market on a stretch of riverfront that long has been considered a prime spot for residential development but one that so far has failed to live up to that billing.

Mr. Stolze doesn't mind blazing the trail.

"It's exciting. I like to go against the grain, generally speaking, in business so it appeals to me to be a pioneer," he said. "I think it's ripe. I think the whole area is ripe for residential development."

He may be right.

Hear that site (next to the Rite Aid) is owned by the Biros family and they are merely clearing it as an attempt to sell/market/develop it.
Judging by the 5,6,7 years or whatever the other Biros site has been under development on Walnut near Long Run Rd - don't hold your breath.
Let's hope that if something does come of it, that it's not another ghetto joint for the welfare pigs (Dollar General, Rent A Center, Jackson-Hewitt, check cashing joint, etc....)

Eddie, instead whining like a little bi tch, why don't you put your money where your large mouth is. You must have such great wealth, surely you can qualify for a large upscale franchise to put there. Until then quit crying about what kind of businesses investors with real money decide to open. Your armchair developing gets as much accomplished as you whacking off to the internet

While I do not agree with the general tone of Eddie's letter , I feel he has a point concerning
the shopping mall near the beginning of Long Run Road . The developer/investors should
have acted in a more responsible manner and not left the development in a half finished state for years .
