It is what it is ! It's an easy 4 year degree - without additional degrees - it doesn't warrant the salaries & pensions provided . It's that simple .

I agree with your 100%. Not too many education students who encounter academic difficulties transfer to the health professions, engineering, science, or mathematics, but the converse is historically true.
I believe that the PA school code requires at least 15 post graduate credits that you pay for. I do not know the present requirements.
I am not up to day on the situation today, but years ago many enrolled in a mail order school out of Florida for their advanced degrees and especially their PhD.
Also, it was rumored for years that many going to local collages for their advanced degrees somehow are excused from work to attend class on the clock. You pay double -- when they are not at work and for their tuition and books.
Thanks to Al Fondy, the education profession is about me and $$$$$$. The students and their educationa are just in the way.

Teachers don't teach like they used to, with all the tools out their at their disposal it's a cake walk today to be a teacher. But some school districts should be punished as pay raises and a great benefit plan an pension paid by the tax payers, a district such as McKeesport which is a few schools in Pa . that are lacking in educating their students.
McKeesport turns out morons as the state PSSA's show.
Underachievers walk out classroom doors year after year in McKeesport while handing out diplomas that look good on a wall, that's about it.
Teachers are responsible for their student grades or lack there of.
It's a double edged sword.
While McKeesport turns out cooks, janitors , laborers, dishwashers , and maybe a few car mechanics, the grades show that teachers aren't putting their skills to work and having retards showing up on graduation day.
Newly constructed schools don't create better students, teachers do.
I understand that not every child will succeed, but McKeesport has been failing for years and years with mediocre teachers that barely passed their own standards to get a teachers degree.
It's not that hard folks, and don't play that 'it's the parents fault' card.
That only works for so long.
Working 180+ days is not a job, it's a free ride on the tax payers back which by the way pays your salaries and all the perks that the union demands. If by chance ( which it is ) the Teachers pension fund in PA is running in the RED ......the tax payers should bail you out, I say kick in some extra deductions from your pay to bring it up to where it should be, or do you keep striking for more money and perks because you work so hard teaching our children * rolls eyes *

Schools promoting rewards for attendance
In an effort to encourage better attendance, superintendent Linda Lane sent a letter to parents of chronically absent students recognizing that some absences are "unavoidable" but saying that missing too much school for any reason "can cause your child to fall behind academically."
Countywide, Kathryn Vargas, manager of programs for children and youth at the United Way of Allegheny County, said more than 150 organizations and nine school districts -- Carlynton, Chartiers Valley, Duquesne, Elizabeth-Forward, McKeesport Area, Pittsburgh, Sto-Rox, Wilkinsburg and Woodland Hills -- signed the pledge to promote school attendance.
More information on the countywide "Be There" campaign is available at unitedwaypittsburgh.org/be-there .

You rely on an unmoderated, 100% anonymous, "anyone can post anything" forum like this to confirm your news?
#28 Mar 17, 2014
Where do you get your information?
There are MANY children in the MCK school district doing extremely well.....straight A's even.
My kids are three of them. They have many classmates in advanced classes. They are in band, orchestra, science club etc. They are working HARD and accomplishing much.
Parents DO play a major role. teachers are not supposed to be babysitters.
My kids are not running the hood from the time school lets out to nightfall, theyare home studying and getting rest.
To think that teachers are the sole cause of students not doing well is naive.
Parents sending kids to school and forgetting about them is the problem. Parents need to be active in their child's education.

Wondering what YOU do for a living and what preparation you had to do for your job?
#30 Mar 17, 2014
Care to share what you do for a living?
If you call working 8.5 hours day in the school teaching classes, then going home to spend a couple hours grading papers, then spending weekends supporting the musicals, field trips, planning for next week etc etc etc a "cake walk", you must be a rocket scientist or brain surgeon or something, right?
Maybe the teachers should also escort each child home to be sure they get home safely, then sit down with each one individually at night to make sure that they do their homework and then get to bed on time? And while they are at it, maybe they can instill in the kids the concept of looking for traffic and for not going to giant eagle after school but instead coming right home?
If you believe that parents have less responsibility here than teachers, you are either NOT a parent or a very poor one.

why do charter school students do better than public school students?
Charter schools cant strike, they cant ask for pension and wage increases and benefits, the teachers that don't perform well get let go, they get raises on their merit. they have no unions , they teach kids as they should. McKeesport kids are losers and the state of Pa proves that they are in the bottom 10 of the dumbest kids in Pa. not a good average.
what a joke and you wonder why families aren't moving to that town.
education and safety play key rolls as far as a family moving to McKeesport..........McKeesport has high crime and drug rate teachers that are in it for the money only. and the town is run by crooks and the cops get kickbacks as well as politicians do...

And your post proves how dumb people really are. Thank you for the evidence

The solutions are simple but the teachers' union and school board and legislature would never support the following:
1. Single term for each and every school board member
2. Unconditional vouchers for each and every student.
3. A state law that every employee in the Commonwealth including the fast food places must offer a pension funded by the employees like the 2 1/2% of their salary times the number of years. It is the person's option to participate or not. Recall I said offer!
This will level the playing field and improve education instantly. The social security formula is equal for all why not the private pensions formula as funded by the employees.

I completely finished 10 grades of school and then dropped out. I am prepared. I got a union job that pays over $29/hour.
That is more that some new college grads get and I am not $50,000 in hock.

Not very good at reeding but good at riting. I never screwed up signing my paycheck or signing for my entitlement programs. That is all the riting you need to know to live good in the Democratic Plantation Society.
I love these Santa Claus entitlements and I will always vote for Democratic Santa Claus. Santa Claus should fund a two trip to Europe for my baby mommies and me. We deserve it for voting for Santa Claus in DC.
I am a baby daddiee and working on numbers 3 and 4.

Yes, and you're either naive, a first time-poster, or obviously ignorant of how this town really operates.
Or a city buddy who trolls here all day - probably on taxpayer time - because City Hall is strangely concerned about comments on an unmoderated, 100% anonymous, "anyone can post anything" forum like this.
#39 Mar 18, 2014
City Hall and other elected officials should be concerned about the freedom and knowledge of Topix posters who post facts and truth.
The MDC has control of the local news media and spin the news. Example, How fast they reported how Gergely was going to contribute the money he received from the Porkster when he got caught on an intercepted communication reported by the Pittsburgh media.
Nothing reported by the local news media on the missing scrap materials at MACM and the firing of the superintendent of MACM. Why not?
The interesting thing is that IMO a high percentage of what is posted is accurate. Yes, there are some that want to contribute and reveal but are so misinformed.
It was a good job by a Topix poster revealing our esteemed state official getting some ZZZZZ.
One misinformed is the person who thinks the City should pay off Ms. D's settlement when it is the MASD responsibility. Many are not able to differentiate between city, state, county, and MASD responsibilities and faults.

If think the good Senator is looking down at some reading material in front of him on the table, so holds true of the gentleman on the right side of the picture. Looking down head tilted doesn't mean people are sleeping. I'm sure he was reading the political material that was placed in front of him. The great Senator works very hard to bring businesses to our area.
While these politicians try to push Mr. Wolf for Governor down our throats , I will cast my vote in another direction.
That's the problem with these politicians ,I usually don't vote for who they are endorsing ,that's just me though. I can think on my own without being fed and lied to. The majority of the time my candidate doesn't win. But I do try .

What a bunch of crap this site is . I answer the political puppet boy or girl - Iggle -post 22 & it gets tossed off . No bad language , only an attack on the knee-pad wearing stooges of the MDC . I simply posted I made nearly 98,000 last year - more than their puppet masters make WITHOUT their kickbacks & corruption . And I only axed that they leave some honest , hard working butcher alone , cause it ain't me . Baloney might be a big part of their existence - not mine . Oh & one more - I work for a large corporation - might I ask 'who owns you'?
If you're paid & supported by the few remaining working class taxpayers of this ghetto-burg- learn some respect for your employers.
