even the cheapest pack of smokes is about 5 dollars now....this isnt fair, the poured drink tax was reconsidered when millions of alchoholics protested against it , should smokers do the same?

FYI: the tax that just passed was only the state tax, the federal tax will take effect within the next two months, expect to pay about 8-9dollars for a pack of smokes...

We keep taxing tobacco products because no matter what the cost people are still going to smoke/chew. As people get fed up all you are going to do is put another industry under (tobacco). How about we eliminate some congressional seats, state senators and so on. Living in McKeesport you can live across the street from someone and have 2 different state reps, what gives. While we are at it why does Mckeesport need 25 to 30 polling places? The problem with government is that it is too big on all levels and needs to raise taxes so they can vote in pay raises for themselves while no one is watching. Impeach the lot of them!

on another note, in pennsylvania, there are items that dont have taxes like clothing and unprepared foods. even a .5 percent increase in tax on either item would create great revenue and ease other taxes like property and school.

The Gov. can't single out AIG when it comes to taxing their bonuses (by law being singled out: individual or group of individuals) but it's ok to single out smokers? I guess smokers aren't being single out according to their standards!

I understand the need to generate tax revenue and such, but there should be a limit. I understand tobacco is not a necessity. Neither is alcohol and other things. However, this is why the economy is unstable. The Government has to take from Peter to give to Paul. It would have an impact on the tobacco companies, which is one of our largest industries left. Even if the Feds wanted to impose additional taxes, the state should have had the common decency to not also increase taxes imposing a double-whammy.
Yet, on another note, I doubt many smokers will abandon their habit just because they have to pay more. True, no one says these people have to smoke, but they should not be punished just because they choose to. Cigarettes are addictive. It is more of a psychological effect than anything. Many people do not have the will-power or the resources to quit. And who are we to blame these weak-minded individuals. They are dependant upon it. The tax will definately be effective in generating revenue, but it sounds like a lose-lose situation to me.
Though it may be off topic, but I feel this is a good reason to legalize marijuana. Imagine the tax revenues to be made. Obviously there would have to be restrictions on its use, same as there are with smoking in public places and drinking and driving, but the outcome would be better. Alcohol is said to have more adverse effects than a little bit of hemp.
As crazy as it may seem, I do not feel there would be a lot of takers. Once it's legalized, the value will decrease as will the appeal. The thrill of getting away with doing something illegal will be gone. Just a thought...

Not only are we being singled out by higher taxes, but now we can't smoke anywhere but outside. If they are that bad for you why don't they ban all cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc? Just make it illegal to make them and sell them.

Best way to combat high taxes is to quit smoking.

They should double the price of a pack of smokes and use that extra imcome to shore up the under funded teachers' and public workers' pension funds.

Smoking stinks except when it funds or pensions!

The answer is because too many businesses still have stakes in it and their contributions to PACs.

It's a filthy and vile habit that stinks and kills you. Yeah, THATS attractive. yet people keep doing it.

It doesnt even belong OUTSIDE......you should only be able to smoke in your home with the windows and doors sealed tight. You like that stench, more power to ya....but for those of us who prefer to breathe relatively clean air and not your filth shouldnt be forced to breathe it in.

This is fine as long as the hobo paid the smoking tax.

We are lobbing to increase the per pack tax to at least $20.00.

This should be a no brainer since Wolfe has not met a tax he does not like. The teachers and administrators are grossly under paid and their pensions should be doubled. This will result in much higher performing students.

A hobo tried to sell used hot pepper juice gerbils. The reason I'm posting on this thread is that he had smoking fuming out of his hoo haw. Maybe we should tax that smoke......a whiff of that was like getting hit with pepper spray.
