After four years of planning and site preparation, Rick and Jan Kugler opened Lampert’s Deli Express with smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes.
The couple, who have owned Lampert’s Market in McKeesport’s Grandview neighborhood since 1993, hosted an emotional grand opening Thursday for their new deli and convenience store at 2010 Eden Park Boulevard.
“I’ve got to thank everyone who is here and who helped,” Rick Kugler said.“We stuck it out.”
The site has been frustrating for the Kuglers and the government officials who have helped to bring the project to fruition.
The Kuglers purchased the property through sheriff sale on Aug. 4, 2008. By November of that year, ground was broken to remove fuel tanks from a gas station that was one of several previous businesses on the site.
At that time, the Kuglers expected to be open by spring of 2009. But their vision was put on hold when construction halted and remediation began. The project needed to comply with state and federal environmental regulations.
The Lampert’s Deli Express project was embraced by the West to West Coalition and redevelopment authorities of McKeesport and Allegheny County. In January of this year, the project was approved for a $200,000 loan of Community Infrastructure & Tourism Fund monies.
“It’s just a mess down there. It’s been a mess for 10 years,” Rick Kugler said in January.“I took a shot 3 1⁄2 years ago. We’re finally getting to the point where we can pull this off.”
McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko said the Kuglers have shown nothing short of perseverance and the city appreciates their effort.
“We’re all very much aware of this being an anticipated grand opening,” Cherepko said.“It’s not only going to be beneficial to our residents, but to this (Eden Park Boulevard corridor) as an educational and recreational area.”
The Kuglers hope customers will be drawn to the new store for hot breakfast and lunch items during their commute through that part of town. The deli menu includes hoagies with Lampert’s meats, including hand-cut steak and homemade sausage. McKeesport favorites include Grandma’s fried bologna and Isaly’s chipped ham sandwiches. A new concoction, Pappy’s pot roast sandwich, was invented by the Kulgers’ grandchildren Mason and Madelyn as a must-add menu item. There are a variety of burgers, sides, entree salads and homemade soups.
“All of our soups and chili are made from scratch,” Jan Kugler said.
During Thursday’s grand opening, customers marveled at the building, which was rebuilt almost from scratch. Keeping only the floors and frame, crews rebuilt the parking lot, the store’s interior and infrastructure.
Jan Kugler said there has been plenty of prayer involved in their waiting game, as she invited the Rev. Doug Burns of Christ United Methodist Church to offer a blessing on the new store.
“A worthwhile project is worth seeing through,” Burns said.“And it’s been accomplished.”
State Sen. James Brewster, who was McKeesport’s mayor when the Kuglers began their project, said “seeing it through” is more than getting the store open. It’s about keeping it open.
“Our job when we leave here is to patronize this place,” Brewster said.“Spend money. Don’t just drive by and say,‘Boy, that looks nice.’”
Brewster thanked the Kuglers for their patience and perseverance, noting the process carried over three mayors, two senators and two county executives.
“Here’s a couple that invested their money and put a lot on the line to put a business in our town — in McKeesport, in Allegheny County,” he said.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said Lampert’s Deli Express is a source of pride, not only to the Kugler family, but the McKeesport community.
“It’s a proud day,” he said.“Everyone should be very proud of this grand opening.”

SO nice to have a VERY NICE and CLEAN store to go to for last minute items and such!

This could have been a relaity much sooner were it not for the EPA nuts.

But glad it has been resolved and the store is open!

I stopped in there wed evening to just pick up a couple things and was very impressed with the store....and I was shocked to see the place open bright and early this morning! Awesome!

ITS ABOUT TIME we had a store like this in the area!

To the Kuglers : Please consider selling propane tank refills at reasonable prices also!

Got chicken & fries Wed and today. Wed great today not so great. The fries were an afterthought. Got a small box full on wed. today barely a handful. You need to be consistent and I think a small box is the right size for 3.00, not a handful. And might I and the woman was more interested who was there than making my order.

Their food is great. Like you, I also detected that one clerk is somewhat disconnected and distracted from serving customers. I think this is part of her training and she will improve eventually.

My problem is she was more interested in giving him
9/10 of the ff and me 1/10. She needs a lot more training to make it and as I said you need to getr consistant in what you give people, until then I personally will not be back!!!!!!!!!! You will not make it with the way she is giving away food to certain people of the male species!!!!!!!!!

I like their food. I hope you return and speak to owner about your concern. That would help us all. You should not punish the owner for something he is not aware of.

I witnessed first hand when a WalMart male clerk was trying to impress a female employee on break with not charging her for a soda drink. The person in line behind her inquired why she did not have to pay for the drink and she said she was an WalMart employee.

Unfortunately the person was an undercover security officer for Walmart. I would guess that they are now former Walmart employees.

So these things happen many places today.

I thought the owner would respond but I guess they are not interested enough in their business to respond to complaints, poor way of doing business!!!!!!!!!! I think the person with the problem was the mgr. or person in charge when I was there. I would appreciate a reponse form the owner or person in charge!!

Your friend lied. It was ten rat heads and they were still attached to the bodies.

Seriously? You really expect a business owner to respond to a complaint filed by an anonymous topix poster with a topix apology?

Get a grip. Consumer complaints should be issued directly to the stakeholders, not a community forum. Personnel matters should be handled promptly and discreetly. Lastly,$3.00 for chicken and fries (whether it's a small box full or a handful - what's the difference, anyway) is a bargain.

I don't think you'll break the bank if you make good on your threat to never patronize their establishment again. LOL.

One could also inquire about the amount of FF before ordering. If a clerk seems to be distracted by some young stud - Just apologize to her and him for stepping in from of the stud for service. Let her wait and the stud first and then request her undivided attention like she gave the stud.

Both will soon get the picture.

At Versailles McDonald where the service is terrible, I have ordered but then left the premises before being served because they are so disorganized and inefficient and I got impatient with waiting.

Yes, this is costly for me, and of course they had my money already and I lost financially on this strategy.

But this may get their attention and confuses them about the bizarre customer who paid and then walked out. They may wonder why the customer left without his order. May be the manager gets involved and the next customers may treated faster.
