Who else thinks the 1.70% wage/local tax is too high in McKeesport?

I would like to know how the 1.70% wage tax is helping "revitilize McKeesport"? White Oak, West Mifflin, and several other local communities are only paying 1% for wage tax. Basically, I am being penalized for living in McKeesport and having a JOB!

I have written the mayor several times and have not gotten any response. April 15th is quickly approaching and I find it upsetting I have to pay this much wage tax. Why is McKeesport wage/local tax higher than all the surrounding communities? If you want to "bring back McKeesport" and encourage more people who do have jobs to live here, why not reduce the wage tax to 1%?

I agree we do have a fantastic fire department, but so do alot of other communities who pay 1% wage tax, not 1.7% like McKeesport.

I have a proposal in my platform ( visit www.paulshelly.com )to lower it to 1.5%. I'm willing to pay more for a professional fire department that responds in three minutes on average than a volunteer department that responds on average in 12.

We also offer things like free concerts at Renzie, International Village, Four Firework displays, etc.

City of Pittsburgh pays 3.75. We don't have it that bad.

Would that satisfy you?

I dont have a problem with the 1.7 tax.

IF that money is 100% used to revitalize the city.

IMHO free concerts at renzie , International Village and Fireworks do NOTHING to that end....I mean, has it worked yet?

These events only get some folks in the renzie area for a short time...what is in that area that benefits from them? Giant Eagle? The donut connection? Heck, even the convenience store closed (a few times now)...a new one is opening soon I guess.....

We should be trying to get people into DOWNTOWN, not renzie.

Bring the Village back to 5th avenue downtown....at least you get people down into that area.....to support that it means cleaning up.

Open up the midtown plaze as a flea market.......in this economy flea markets are taking off. And that space would be great for that.

Bring back bingo.....elderly people love that stuff and waste tons of money on it. I washed windows in the bingo rooms at Modtown back in the day and it was always PACKED.

I dont even go to the fireworks anymore because of the nightmare getting in and out and around for them, and I live 10 minutes away.

Out of towners are enjoying them alright...and then leaving for their own areas to eat and such.

Who are you to post "versailles virgin" as you don't even live in McKeesport so no one wants your two cents moron, stick to the problems in Versailles! BTW Virgin, I think you need to go back to grade school for spelling, "new born" is not two words idiot, it's spelled NEWBORN. Google it TARD!

FYI - I am currently looking for a house outside of McKeesport, most likely in White Oak where I'll pay 1% tax. That will open up one more house in McKeesport where my landlord tells me he will be making the house what else, but good olde "Section 8" in McKeesport. Most likely the next tenant won't have a job, therefore they won't have to worry about paying the 1.7% tax.

WAY TO GO - BRING BACK MCKEESPORT!!!! McKeesport, home of drugs, crime, welfare and Section 8!

Working Mckeesporter, let me ask you this. When your new house catches on fire, would you rather have a volunteer fire company answer in 12 minutes (national average) or a professional fire department (McKeesport) who responds in three. Is the lower wage tax worth your new home? A life?

While you are over there, please make sure you stop back in for our FREE summer concert series and International Village like many White Oak "working" people do.

If you have a boat, try finding a Marina in White OaK.

Does W.O. have a Boys & Girls club? A Little Theater? Two rivers for recreation? A heritage Center? Renzie Park? A university? A River trail?

A public works department that is capable of salting all their roads?(Remember the state of emergency declared there this winter when they layed off most of their public works guys?

You get, what you pay for.

That being said,

I'd cap Section 8 housing and lower the wage tax to a more reasonable 1.5%.

Have a nice trip.

Paul,

Your ideas are dead on. From reading your posts, I can see that you are on the ball and back to full strength.

We need more committed young people like you to hold office. We've stagnated. Different people doing the same old things over and over.

I pray your health holds up.

WE NEED YOU!

You forgot:

- A hospital
- Carnegie Library
- The Palisades
- Lake Emily
- Little Theater

There is no place I'd rather live. I want my son to have the sort of hometown Mckeesport used to be. We still have some good people. What we need is better leadership.

Ever consider running for Mayor?-Justice

How is a 1.5% tax any more "reasonable" than 1.7%?

The difference in real money is negligible....about $80 a year for someone making $40k.

I would rather pay the $80 and have more police coverage, the internet site fixed so it actually has info I can use as a resident or that damn sewer fixed at the bottom of marshall.

Concerts in the park are mostly aimed at the elderly from what I can see and they pay the least in taxes.....international village doesnt interest me and I dont know any of my neighbors who go....as for the marina....whoopee.......if I owned a boat maybe I would care.

Its great we have this stuff if it attracts useful taxpaying residents.

But we have had them for years now....why no spike in residency?

Its because the things that really MATTER arent getting enough attention...

sluggo... good points you made above... but bragging about a fire department that is understaffed and underpaid and then slapping the neighboring volunteers who save our asses on every big fire we have had in McKeesport in the last thirty years is hitting below the belt.... those volunteers are well trained and deserve better than you offer.

p.s.- National average response??? where did that number come from I am interested in learning more.

I LIVE IN THE BETTER PART OF MCKEESPORT AND HOPEFULLY NEVER HAVE TO STEP FOOT IN DOWNTOWN OR SURROUNDING PART OF IT INCLUDING VERSAILLES AVENUE. IT HAS BECOME THE GHETO AND NO RESPECTING PERSON WOULD BE SEEN IN THOSE AREAS!
