Milkmen Mill Workers

Mill workers, Milkmen, Postal workers, dietary workers at a hospital...I could go on and on. These are what you would call "unskilled jobs". Mill workers, milkmen, postal workers work in the worst weather agreed. Dietary workers?? Why shouldn't they make a living wage??? UPMC is monopolizing our area and a person that goes to work there everyday shouldn't expect more than minimum wage?? Your so wrong!!

You truly believe that a dietary worker at a hospital and someone putting groceries in a bag and collecting carts is the same thing?

SO....then.....define "living wage". The unions scream for that but no one ever says what the minimum "living wage" is.

Should someone be able to have cable TV and a car on a "living wage"? Or just food and basic shelter, which seems to me to be what it would be.

And explain why ANY employer has the obligation to pay you what you think you need to live rather than you looking for the job that pays/fits your lifestyle?

Or why any employer should be forced to make a job that was previously only for kids etc and convert it into a career for someone?

People do not seem to like the concept that no matter where you go, there are HIGH paying jobs and there are LOW paying jobs. The latter being those jobs that anyone can do....that person leaves, someone will gladly take their place. That is called "the market". HIGH paying jobs are those that many cannot do or that take special skills that few have or doing things that few will want to do. The market is in play there too.

The dietary workers at our hospital were paid minimum wage UNTIL they unionized. No corporation is going to pay what you're worth unless you have a union OR there is the threat of going union. And yes I believe a living wage should include a home, food, ability to pay your utilities, ability to own a car (I'm not saying a brand new one) but Giant Eagle executives are sitting pretty...real pretty. They can pay all of their full-timers a living wage.

And likely the staffing levels dropped some or the costs to the patients/health insurance went up. We ALL pay for those results.

Socialists can't understand that the money has to come from SOMEWHERE. Companies are not going to cut their profits so that the person taking out the trash can get $1 more an hour and buy that shiny new XBOX game they have been wanting.
But wrote:

Thats crap.

Plenty of companies pay for what they want.

Just because there is a job position at a company does not mean that that particular job is extraordinary. MANY jobs are jobs that others can do. Many jobs are just menial tasks that need done.

Unions just cause distrust and upheavals and THAT is what the companies who cave to them are trying to avoid....sometimes its cheaper to settle than to fight. Unfortunately that is the case -- we have lost our balls to stand up for principle......like the principle that a grocery bagging job was never meant to be a career or a job to support the family with.

Ok, first off, no one is OWED a living , a home, a car or utilities.

My God, talk about the "entitlement" attitude. Ya know there was a day that people actually understood that if you do not work you do not eat. Care and electricity used to be considered LUXURIES. You worked HARD for the little you got.

Then along the way the welfare state stepped in.

NOW, people think that just because they breath they deserve to have a warm comfortable home with AC and heat , and a car parked in the driveway. Christ, the new housing that the government is building for welfare folks and "the working poor" are way nicer than MY house, and *I* pay everything out of MY pocket.

Dont hate on executives -- they paid their dues along the way. Went to school, followed a certain path, didn't get high and loaf every day and did what they had to to get ahead.

PLEASE , define "overpaid" or "sitting pretty".

Do you realize that to some folks in some countries, even our "working poor" would be considered wealthy?

And haven't you ever heard about the execs who started in the mailroom?

THAT used to be the American dream....but now, unions and socialists have the folks on the lower rungs of society thinking they are OWED something.

That is like a middle class person feeling like they are owed a mansion rather than the studio apartment they have ( which is a veritable CASTLE to some folks in other poorer countries)

Its ludicrous.

Maybe if the "working poor" didnt squander their earnings on things like 40s, blingy wheels for their 10 year old Lexus, designer clothes and the latest iPhone they wouldn't NEEED the foodstamps that I help pay for.

If you are "working poor" and have a cell phone, a car or cable tv, you really are NOT "working poor"...you are someone who doesnt know that things like this are luxuries.

If you want those things, byu God better yourself and find a job that will support those things. Don't demand that you "anyone can do it" job "deserves" to be paid like it (or the person doing it) is something special because -like it or don't - it doesn't!

In any society you have a pecking order and a job ladder.

In order to have a ladder that goes anywhere you have to have LOWER rungs and UPPER rungs.

What socialists and unions want is that we have a "fair", horizontal rung system.....basically a ladder than can go no where by design.

Your attitude is so offensive. How dare a person without a college education be expected to be paid more than minimum wage, is that you opinion ?? Yeah it's fine for the executives at the top to make hundreds of millions of dollars and their retirement well do we need to go into the golden parachutes. But the grunts, the people that work everyday busting their asses aren't allowed to expect to be paid a living wage?!!? Look at Walmart, they have full time employees that they tell to go to the welfare office and apply for benefits. Take care of the working man !!!

The arrogance of some of you people truly astounds me. I have a degree and am proud of it and make a very nice wage for my family and me. That doesn't mean that I don't care about people who don't. First of all healthcare should be a right not some thing that the very poor, or unionized workers, or the very wealthy have access to. Do none of you care about your fellow man, your neighbors or at least their children?? I need to go take a drink..you people are so self centered and truly obnoxious!

Where in any of my posts did I say that? Thats more of the socialist rhetoric.

What I said was if you want to make more than minimum wage you need to find a better job.

Maybe a college degree helps with that, maybe not. Many people with degrees are having the same trouble finding work as those who barely finished high school.

The key issue with your argument there is the word "expect". Typical entitlement attitude. No one gets anything automatically, except the woman who keep squeezing out babies down at Crawford village. Everyone else has to do it on his or her own.

The yahoos who go to college and get a degree in 18th century poetry and then cry about how they cant find a job-well DUH. How many 18th century poetry experts does our economy need? If you can find a job in that field, GREAT! For everyone else, I suggest getting a degree in a field that is HIRING RIGHT NOW.

That improves your CHANCES of getting work.

Why is it that when the socialists start whining, all they do is whine about "the executives at the top" and their golden parachutes. Yet they tune in every week to MTV cribs to see how their favorite rap stars "live large".

The top dogs get the most kibble. Deal with it.

I am very much NOT an executive but I recognize that there is a "food chain". Is it always "fair" (whatever that means)? No.

Can I direct my path to be one of them? Yes. We all have the choice.

I dare say that if you are a minority or woman right now you have a MUCH better chance than a white male at doing so.

That doesn't seem "fair" either. But its true.

I dont see any of you socialists whining about and castigating your star athletes or rap stars making "crazy chedda"...you just keep buying their tickets and t shirts and headphones and feed into their wealth and dream how it should one day be you.

You want "the chedda", use your talent and make money like MC Get Busy and Donald Trump.

Got no talent? Well, who's fault is that?

Do you really think that a person who makes money for a company (ie execs) should be paid the same as the guy who sweeps the company loading dock floor? You are dreaming.
Right wing attitude wrote:

AGAIN - define "living wage".

I do not agree that "a living wage" should include cell phones, cars or bling for cars, home OWNERSHIP, cable tv etc etc . Those are all what we call LUXURIES.

You decide you want 10 kids, dont whine about "living wage". Buy a 50 cent condom and prevent the problem to begin with. You were creative enough to make those kids, be creative and figure out a way to pay for them aside from bagging groceries.

Etremely low skilled jobs like grocery bagger, dog walker, street sweeper, ditch digger, etc are jobs most people have at least once in their lives as STARTER JOBS. They figure out that working harder or finding their talent and selling that or whatever will get them a BETTER job and MORE MONEY.

If the companies and stores are forced to pay higher wages to the lowest level employees, that means lower wages for the better, higher skilled employees and higher prices on goods and services. It also means a cut in the number of low skilled jobs that are available, which makes the job market WORSE for those looking for that sort of work.

Dont you get it? Companies are in business to MAKE MONEY. They are not going to cut their profits to pay a high school dropout more to bag groceries.

Just like the money we spend on the welfare leeches, the money has to come from "somewhere".

Ok smartass - you have a degree and make "a very nice wage".

Would you be willing to take a 20% pay cut TODAY if it would help the folks you are "standing up" for get more wages or healthcare? Dont bother saying you would, cause we know thats BS -- you would NOT, and you know it. You call us self centered for being realistic but look in the mirror....you are all socialist until it comes to DOING something that matters.

The geeks at the "occupy" rallies were like that......saying how dedictaed they were to the cause but most of them went home at night to their warm houses and just went to the rallies to party and bitch and whine. None of them gave up wages or anything they owned for "the cause".

So, why should company owners or executives make less money , then, for people on your level and below to get more money?

Because it's "not fair" how much they make?

Well, sir/madam, some could argue that you make way more than YOUR job is "worth" and "way more than you need"..... How do you answer that?

Its easy to whine about how wrong things are when you have no skin in the game.

I just saw an episode of MTV cribs, now that you mention it.

"Top 13 most outrageous cribs". All of the homes are owned by entertainers and sports figures.

Shaq was around #6 in the countdown. He has 6 cars, 5 of them 6 figure price tags and each one cost more than any one house in Haler Heights. His "house" has 13 bedrooms and like 11 bathrooms.(Keep in mind he is married and has two kids so of course he needs that many bedrooms, right?). A private theatre.
15' x 30' bed in his bedroom. A baskebtball court inside the home (think high school gymnasium sized).

Mind you this is (or was - he may have sold it)just one of several homes he has.

Now, why is no one "occupying" Shaq's house to protest his having "too much" and "more than anyone needs!". That is EXACTLY what they were doing to the bank ceos and execs. Except the bank CEOs and execs are not as rich as Shaq.

Why is that? Why do people say Shaq and other entertainers/ sports figures are juts "a brutha trying to get ahead" and bank execs are villains?

Do you know how many "working men" could live off of just what his CARS and GARAGE are worth? Why not go after him and his entertainer buddies?

THEY are the ridiculously rich. Demand that THEY take pay cuts to pay the packers and sackers.

Think the people they have washing their cars and mowing their lawsn are making $50,000 a year?

LOL

Yes, and that is why the 12th precinct is not a high crime area with drive by shootings.
