I get a bill today for 2007 taxes for living in McKeesport. Apparently since less than half of McKeesport works, they like the working half to pay double, at 2%. Well when I lost my job in 2007 and had to take a new job at HALF the pay just to keep working, I could not afford to pay my local taxes.

Now they added all these penalties and fees to double the costs again, making the costs come to about 4% of my very meager paycheck that I EARNED. Can they do this if the person was partially unemployed?

Thanks McKeesport. Right before Christmas you send me a HUGE bill to pay for all the Section 8 housing and welfare. I am sure hardly anyone pays taxes in that town. I am so glad I left that shithole!

Just make a political contribution to the machine or the right elected official and all will be forgiven.

Quite a few of the well connected and city employees do not pay their municipal service fee, property taxes, and business and earned income taxes.

A case in point, the city solicitor is deliquent on his many taxes. Just check out the prothronotary's website. Two councilpersons are deliquent on their property taxes.

The addminstration will not enfocre the statutes because the scofflaws are political contributors and social friends.

My reason for posting was to see if anyone else in McKeesport has had this problem with Keystone Collections, and if they are getting more than a double original bill due to all the penalties and interest. Has anyone had any luck reducing the penalties, etc.

I don't care about your political rantings. That is all anyone writes about on this board. That's why this board sucks, only the same people post the same political rants day in and day out ... it's getting really OLD. Boring. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Another reason why McKeesport sucks. EARNED income pays double tax. So you pay double if you WORK and LIVE in McKeesport. More incentive to move the hell out of McKeesport like I did if you work. Now if you want section 8 and welfare - McKeesport is the place to be!

I stated factual and historical information and you accuse me of political ranting. I take issue with your crude response to my attempt to explain and help you with your issue.

No, Keystone will not cut you a break. And, they should not give you a pass. You are a scofflaw just like the well connected political cronies who are not paying their share.

However, they are friends with the owner of Keystone and all are big contributors to the Port machine and elected officials. So they get a pass. They are smart; they contribute, but you are naïve and will not contribute to the machine.

You got singled out. I am glad that Keystone appeared to selectively pursue your delinquent earned income tax. You are right the earned income tax in the Port is 1.2% which is more than twice the typical rate of 0.5% in most surrounding municipalities.

You only get what you pay for. You pay more in the Port and you receive better, faster, and more efficient services. So move if you cannot tolerate superior services.

Now quit your cry baby pouting and pay the 1.2% and penalties like I do and many non-connected others who are delinquent.

Call the city solicitor he is an expert on being a scofflaw on all taxes. He will teach you the ropes and knows the Keystone folks.

Well, I know folks who have had run ins with Keystone collections and yes they are a pain.

EVERYONE who works in ANY city and earns even $1 has to file the return and pay taxes if required (the political accusations in posts above not-withstanding), and you have to pay them on time.

My question would be why the city waited almost 5 years to try to collect. If they also lapsed in their effort to collect, why should you be held liable? Or had they tried to collect from you before?

You really are not paying "twice" the taxes now....you are paying the tax bill that was due in 2008 for 2007, PLUS the fees and penalaties charged for not paying when you were supposed to, just like with the IRS. It just so happens that the fees/panalties are equal to the original tax bill. That is how it works.

If you did not make an effort to pay your back-taxes earlier, then I would say you are liable for the fees and penalties. If you tried to pay them earlier, then not so much.

I would check with the magistrates office because that is were they would go to sue you and they might tell you the truth. There is a statue of limitations on how far they can go back to sue you. I understand that everyone should pay earned income tax but Keystone Municiapal Collections gets the information 3 years later they should contacted you then at 12% compounded interest 2007 72% is not fair and you should fight this any way possible. The irs only keeps your returns for 4 years so I am betting 4 years. I could be wrong. Let me know! P.S. I am so glad that employers are required to take it now out.

The delinquent tax collector should be fired or fined for not doing their job in 2002 when you were delinquent in 2001. He may have violated his contract with the municipality - the entity then made you the culprit to shift their irresponsibility to you.

I assume that you are talking about McKeesport/MASD earned income tax. The entity that collects the delinquent taxes does not have to do his job annually because he is a big political contributor to JB and MC. He is above his contractual law.

One day, shortly after joining the PGA tour in 1965, Lee Trevino, a professional golfer and married man, was at his home in Dallas, Texas mowing his front lawn, as he always did.

A lady driving by in a big, shiny Cadillac stopped in front of his house, lowered the window and asked,“Excuse me, do you speak English?"

Lee responded,“Yes Ma'am, I do."

The lady then asked,“What do you charge to do yard work?”

Lee said, "Well, the lady in this house lets me sleep with her."

The lady hurriedly put the car into gear and sped off.

They can not inforce a tax that far back by taking you to the magistrate. Call a tax attorney. I do believe everyone should pay, but everyone doesnt pay and it is unfair that it is left to honest working people. If I couldn't afford the 1.7% Mckeesports/City wage tax back 5 years ago. I certainly dont think its right to charge 60%. 12 % compounded. I am so glad the employers are required to take it out now. I do believe you should have to pay only what is due and think it would be fair to crack down on the people taking advantage of welfare, ssi, working under the table. I think we should start a list that should be public information. Why should contractors, bartenders, work under the table while the collect ssi/welfare or why should people on welfare have other people living with them working under the table . They dont pay wage tax! I do! Its bullshit!

The way to avoid paying the substantial penalties and interest is to pay them when they are due. Easy as pie.

It doesnt make sense to say you cant afford to pay them but then say that you are glad they take them our automatically. The interest and penalties are moot -- you dont pay that unless you dont bother to pay the taxes due, when due.

What you are saying is that you are glad you no longer have the responsibility of paying the taxes on your own, that it is done automatically for you. If folks knew how to put yourself on a budget, save money etc you could pay the taxes when due on your own. But these days no one has any personal control or responsibility anymore.

I understand your legal and technically correct statement. You just collect it for the state and Allegheny county.

The state and Allegheny charge it and your are their agent who is responsible to collect it.
