Layoffs hit home

U.S. Steel on Friday announced it is laying off 142 workers at its McKeesport Tubular Operations pipe production facility.

The steelmaker said a high level of tubular imports has affected business conditions in a way to necessitate the cutback.

Ninety-five employees will remain at the McKeesport facility following the layoffs.

“This is disheartening, not only to the employees but to the city as a whole,” McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko said.

THANKS RYCO for using steel from China and lying on contracts! Thanks attorney general in Pennsylvania for investigating.

Santa Claus never missed a delivery of gifts, cheer, and entitlements. The safety net is well and working. Get a computer and start the unemployment checks applications.

We are saddened with all and their families who were furloughed at the time of a holiday season.

Except for the mayor, all elected officials are quiet about this one.

We hope that all can find similar jobs as soon as possible. Where are you Casey and Brewster and Doyle?

YEs, they are permanent. US Steel has no plans to increase this work force. If fact, they are moving towards a permanent closing of this plant.

U.S. Steel is quoted as saying that it believes many imports are unfairly traded. That statement
if true raises the question as to why there is so little legal action taken on behalf of U.S. companies who's foreign competitors dump their products in this country .

U.S. Steel has complained about dumping practices since at leat the eighties . Is U.S. steel just a sore loser or do their claims have merit ?

Also a previous poster stated the layoffs are not permanent . I hope they are correct but how many times did the steel industry say that in the eighties only to never call back thousands of employees .

Quite correct. Probaly laid off due to BO's & the tree huggers outlook toward the coal industry. No coal = no coke = no steel production in the Mon-Valley . Like the old timers said about the odor in the air -'smells like money to me'. US Steel will shut the Valley down to prove a point. They've done it before to expose a loser like BO.

Agree. Businesses layoff employees, keeping a few to close later. The steel market has been shrinking. Ryco in McKeesport used Chinese steel fittings. U.S. steel knew the market was going to decrease eventually.

Without demand for the product, the layoffs can only remain permanent. Some like to dream or enjoy lying until someone believed it. They need a reality check, possibly medication for the strong delusion.

Was DirectTV ever replaced as the same people in McKeesport promised? No.

Several companies in the United States shut down right after the election. At least we voted.
