I found a nice house in WM, and was wondering if anyone has advice on moving there? I don't know the high school that well for my daughter, safety...etc?
The neighborhood appears to be nice and well kept. And tips would be helpful, just trying to do my homework before purchasing. Thanks

We have lived her for nearly 20 years. Love it here.

You must have bought or going to buy a house on the south end of the borough. a great choice. Don't buy in the north end , that's where all the riff raff live.
Such as pimps, druggies, prostitutes, wife beaters, drunks, sex offenders, and most of the school board lives in the south end, so that tells you something. Plus last year our borough taxes went up 25% to make up the lower assessments of century 3 mall and irvin works. please move here we need you tax dollars.
I hope you daughter plays softball, we have a terrific program and coaching staff. we take our sport teams serious.

I am not sure which end is north or south there. Sorry, I am not really good with that area.
I know the one house is behind Anthony arms, back in that plan down the street.
The other I am confused with, it is over near Holy Trinity Cemetery. If that helps.
I didn't buy yet, just making sure before I check them out this weekend to do the walk through on each one.
I was told by a source that the school changed, and be careful sending my daughter there. I dunno. I looked online, and didn't see anything that bad about it.

watch out for scam softball leagues trying to recruit girls with handwritten signs. They don't have a place to place and it is run by a strange man without any daughters that play in the league

I will watch for that. My daughter is into MMA training, and Competition shooting. She only takes academic courses in school.

I live in WM. Born and raised. Moved away for 4 years and ended up back here when we bought our home. I live on the North End... the people that live on the south end of the boro tend to believe we are the "poor" area. We are the original area. older homes etc. South end is near Century 3 mall and has the newer homes built from mostly the 50's on. Every area of the boro has very nice homes and also some iffy areas. On the north end, near Whitaker border there are projects. On the south end near Anthony Crane/Irvin works there are also projects.

The concern that is being brought up is that WM was forced by the state to take Duquesne City school kids so 7-12 grade has WM and Duquesne students. My son started 7th grade this year. While it freaked me out that they put in metal detectors upon merging the schools, I haven't heard of any incidents. VERY nice middle and high school.

I know people in "rich" boro's who have more issus than WM does (Peters, Bethel, Pleasant Hills) so I don't know that we are any worse/better.

IF it matters, we are close to downtown (if on the north end). It's about a 15 minute commute without a lot of traffic. Within 20-30 minutes you can get to either South Hills Village, Monroeville Mall or Robinson. Very convenient

I couldn't have discribed it any other way. I have lived in wm.north for almost 25 yrs now and can honestly say I can only think of one serious incident that happened in this section of wm. This area shuts down like mayberry when the sun goes down. Love it !

Hey, FNG moving to WM. Let me give you some advice. First of all, you don't ask the questions around here. I do. Understand! Second, we don't want guys like you in this town, drifters. Next thing we know, we got a whole *bunch* of guys like you in WM. THAT'S WHY! Besides, you wouldn't like it here anyway. It's just a quiet little town. In fact you might say it's BORING. But that's the way we like WM. I get paid to keep it that way.

Chief:

You mean boring and quiet like the Imbrogno and late Dr. Risha federal crimes that ended up with Imbrogno in the federal cage? Were you in on the arrest Chief?

Chief Teasel, I'll handle this response my friend. Mr/Ms My Story, allow me to retort.
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man/woman who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Boy this thread certainly went a little bonkers. Being new to this area I was wondering where a hot band mom such asi myself could buy a decent hoagie. I like a meaty hoagie with a tasty sauce.

My family bought a house in Homeville (North part of WM) four years ago. Overall the move was a positive for us. We have no problem with our high school aged boys walking to their friends' homes. We had only one instance of bullying the first year we were here in the high school; my son took his concern to the office and they took care of it right away. He had no more issues after that. Yeah, West Mifflin isn't perfect, but there are much worse places to live.

Still, you have to wonder if other schools' class "reunions" are more like a survivor's reunion.

My parents moved here in 1957.
I survived the "education", strongly resembling the school portrayed in "October Sky".
I planned to leave, make something out of myself, and never return.
I consider it a huge cosmic joke that I still live here. I left, found it wasn't much better, and returned.
I never had to leave when all of the old jobs dried up and blew away. I learned a trade in school.
My kids never had to endure what I did in school, so things changed for the better.

West Mifflin has its problems, but they're not much different than anywhere else.
