This should be a large concern of all school teachers, parents and administrators.........

http://old.post-gazette.com/pg/images/201309/...

You can also read the article in the PPG today.

More than 11,000 students in Allegheny County were habitually truant -- have six or more unexcused absences -- in 2011-12, the most recent year available for the state Safe Schools report.

In that year, 7.8 percent of students in Allegheny County public school districts were habitual truants. That rate was slightly higher than the statewide rate of 6.7 percent in all public schools.

In Allegheny County, habitual truancy rates ranged from less than 1 percent in a handful of districts to 43.8 percent in the McKeesport Area School District.

Wilkinsburg had the second highest habitual truancy rate that year at 40.9 percent, with larger rates at its high school, 57.4 percent, and middle school, 75.4 percent.

Other districts with habitual truancy rates of about 20 percent or higher include Brentwood, Clairton, Penn Hills, Steel Valley, Sto-Rox and Woodland Hills.

What is a teacher supposed to do about a students truancy??? That's the principals responsibility and the truancy officers, yes we have several. Parents should be held accountable.

Let's see if the school board ( which had these numbers last year ) will approach the problem..

Is it all about being elected,or do we have problem solvers on the board to address these issues.

Surely this cannot be ignored.

New schools dont turn out smarter kids.

To understand the problem, you must first accept that the MASD and City and McKeesport political machine are one in the same. Their mission is to continue to control votes and dictate to their constituents and ensure election of endorsed candidates.

I think the cover up and the bungling of the firing or Ms. D. reversed by the Pa Appeals Court is just one case in point.

The cover up of several others involved in the Cornell School scandal is the second point.

The firing of Coach Smith is a third. The firing of Mr. South is another.

A MASD employee was publicly chastised by the State Ethics Commission for having adult oriented material on his computer but nothing was done by the MASD School Board. Like Collins he was rewarded with generous merit monetary increases since then. But, Ms. D. was illegally fired.

To get to the my POINT, the machine and it puppets would never let any parent be lectured, warned, fined, and otherwise legally punished. This could jeopardize machine votes. THE IS BECASUE THE MACHINE DOES EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING TO ENSURE VOTES TO KEEP THEM IN POWER at the expense of our students who by the force of law should be required to attend school.

If a parent is legally punished the machine would lose votes. This is what it is all about. Similar to fixing a traffic citation to entice a vote.

The common thread is the teacher's union and teamsters' local death grip on elected City and MASD school officials. They vote with the union position, and in return the union supports their candidacy.

This is cycle that most likely will never be interrupted by the ballot box. So live with the shame and negativity this brings to the MASD and City and hope your child is a serious student who attends classes.

Remember the teachers and principles can not do their job if the students are NOT IN SCHOOL. It all starts in the with the parent or parents getting their child or children off to school or pay the legal consequences.

But in my opinion, the MASD will not enforce the school code for political reasons as suggested by the machine. Votes first - students second!

As in most schools that I know of, sports comes first, then education.
It's the norm just about all over the country, as new schools are built ,some crumbling down, the most advanced technological advances we have at our finger tips, there should be NO reason why our students are failing.

While 'twittering' to see current gossip and going on Facebook, the internet is only a tool to keep in touch with friends. It's no longer used to research and learn for the future. It's all about internet games, body count and how many armour tanks you blew up.

The football playbook is thumbed through more than the history and algebra books .

It's must be all the bright lights ,cheerleaders and boys dressed up as NFL stars that lure people in to watch them compete as they cheer on, BUT on the other hand this would be a great thing if schools turn out honor students and advance to college with platinum grades to secure future jobs.

Football games are won and lost on the battlefield,a good education has no losses, but wins, all wins for the student who wants to learn..

Why Mckeesport is ranked last out of 43 schools in the area as far as absentee students....it's anyones guess....as folks looking to purchase a home in any district with children of their own ,look at schools to see what the school is doing to ensure education comes first. Education, crime, shopping are the first three things that people who want to move into the neighborhood look at these three things to make their decision for them. McKeesport loses out on all three items. No family moves into a neighborhood because of great sports teams.......they move there for education for their children, and be safe in their homes, and shopping near by. Now on the other hand,if you're a drunk, drug addict,on probation, then this town is right up your alley.. Now back to Tiger football! GO TIGERS!

With a truancy rate of over 40%, the teachers and their sacred union can not complain about over crowed class rooms.

I think the teachers should take a pay reduction in proportion to the attendance percentage.

Yes we owe it all to the new dress code that principal MH forced on all the students, then he doesn't discipline as severely as he had in the past and he says it's all because of his dress code!!

The solutions to MASD and City and authorities woes are more revenues, feel good signs in yards, cover ups of corruption, new schools, higher teacher salaries, more nepotism, more luxury Tahoes, dress code policy, no negative publicity, censor and control of the local news media, more city employee on boards and authorities, and non enforcement of the PA School Code and other governing statutes.

Well with over a 40% truancy it appears the need for schools has run it's course. LQQKS like the school tax dollars would be better spent by we taxpayers on ourselves.

It seems the schools have taken the path of the war on drugs. I believe it is time to stop throwing money at the attempt to eradicate drugs, and now we could eradicate free schools, and save more money.

Just thinking about the 40% plus figure of truancy. Perhaps Romney was off few percentage points when he infamously stated 47% of the country are free loaders. On the other hand it became a reality that more than 47% of eligible voters were truant at the polls.

Let's go 100% home schooling with no government assistance. I vote for McKeesport to pilot such.

Lets spend more money on sporting events, band and cheerleading skills..... it's all about sports teams and other after school functions....while these little brats keep pushing their fund raising
crap on the very same people that pay the teachers to educate them, it's a bunch of BS.

If i want stuff i go and buy it ,not pay the overpriced shit that the brats puch on us.

I love to slam the door in their little faces and give them the finger before i pull the curtains shut. tell your parents to support your activities. im not paying 6 bucks for a week old hoagie with wilted lettuce, rotten tomatoes and 2 thin slices of lunch meat. last one i ate i was plugged up for 4 days.. never again

Some on this thread are just too mean and unfair to the two Cornell School sex scandal lookouts.

They did no apparent wrong. The MASD school board did not accuse them of any wrong doings.

The MASD Teachers' union did not reprimand them for anything.

The PA Board of Education was not even interested.

The local newspaper did not investigate and report in detail because there was nothing to investigate.

The esteemed and revered Dr. Risha corrected all evils by inserting an exoneration letter in at least the male lookout's file.

The MPD or County Police or State Police or DA did not investigate the incidents because none of the sexual encounters took place and if it did, it was consensual between married teachers off the clock.

So lay off this topic nothing wrong ever happened just like the mayor proclaimed.

You are right. Children should also be taught that it's okay to have sex in a school classroom because all the people above also approve of it, not only Mayor Mike.

But in your judgment and mind it is acceptable for a female door watcher at Cornell to teach and her significant other at the time to be approved to return in the future to the class room.

With one peeper teaching and one authorized to return, what are you telling our students about the vices of door watching with so called consensual sex flaming on the other side of the door by two married teachers?

If Ms. D. cannot return then the door watchers should not be teaching now or in the future.
