Because most think it cool, they never see the downside until they get arrested. The worst thing anyone can do is introduce someone to drugs. Look at what waits down the road. Never any money because it goes for drugs, addiction, which is misery on a daily basis, legal trouble, loss of rights and freedom, paying a system for profit which feeds on this. It would be very simple for the courts to order drug offenders to remain in jail until they are past drugs, free and clean system, then order them to work rather than jail. The sad truth is this what feeds courthouse corruption, feeds the lawyers, feeds corrupt law enforcement, feeds naive politicians who could but won't do anything different.

Everytime I go to court over a shoplifter, the same people are their over the same thing. All they get is a smack on the hand and release to do it again. They need to put them in jail or rehab and make them stay until they are clean. Try to help them. All they are doing to hurting them instead of helping them. All we can do is pray for them and hope they get the help they need.

Drs purposely label it "addiction"; the drug has already taken control of a person by the time s/he begins to regret ever starting it. These people need "positive reinforcement". If anybody wants to help a loved one stop an addiction, PLEASE take time to read up on his/her drug, how it reacts on the brain. Then put a (at least 1 yr) plan of action -intervention- into place. A family or a group of friends can make the difference that restores an addict to a healthier life.

It's not just these people today's system hurts, it's their victims, their families, those that care about them, and taxpayers who foot the people for for profit systems. Simple solution, court ordered work, nobody gets out of jail until they are past withdrawal, pass a drug test, then seek and find employment, maybe the system could help, put some money to good use rather than what they are doing with it now.

First step for this would be to vote lifetime career politician Hal "lock 'em up" Rogers out of office. He is chair for the money that goes to these prisons for profits, for pot choppers that fly only at harvest time, for the money that smuggled drugs across the border and when busted for two billion dollars in cocaine trafficking it was their defense that it was "evidence gathering" for "Fast and Furious" gun smuggling to Mexican drug cartels, which killed two Federal agents or that would also still be going on, likely is anyway.

A nephew spent months in one prison, and collected data, for instance, that it received appr. $1300 per inmate per week. Per WEEK. My view: prisons (like schools) are money-making corporations.

Absolutely, but for most it is the legal system and there they are victims of an even more cruel system than their addiction. The system is for profit when it should be or/help for those that have not comitted a violent crime, or burglary/crimes of violence. Most who do drugs are just good 'ol boys and girls who get caught up in this but others would be criminals anyway. Simple to deteremine which from which. 30 years ago if you met someone who had been in prison you knew this person had the potential to be a bad guy, today it could be anyone. Today, in a for profit system, everyone is looked at as a possible means for profit.
