No person should waste their time unless they plan to move to a new area to hone their skills. Why? I am a trained, skilled, accredited welder in GMAW and MIG. I have experience welding steel, aluminium and stainless in thickness's from 10GA to 5". You know what the HIGHEST pay in this region is!$14.48/hr to start. What a load of crap. If your single or share housing cost ok, but no way if your trying to support a family. Do the math:$15x40/hrs=$600 less taxes (or about 25%-35%= about $400/wk. Typical rent/mortgage in the NW region about $800/mnt for a decent 2 bedroom place. You now have about $800 left for the month. Utilities run you about $300 monthly (if your lucky and have a phone) leaving only about $500. Somewhere in there you need (at minimum) food & gas for your vehicle. Do not misunderstand me. If you want to weld, do it. Just don't stay around here. I would suggest northern or central Indiana. I lived in central Indiana for 10+ years and left a company paying me close to $18 per hour as a welder. The cost of living in Indiana is about 30% than living here. When the local companies start paying welders what their worth, than they'll get them.

BTW: Most local fast food chains are starting around $8.00 per hour. Unskilled, untrained nincompoops are making 1/2 what a person with a skilled trade are making. Sound fair? or even reasonable?

Based on local cost of living, trained, skilled, experienced welders should be starting around $20/hr.
