Drivers show little respect for hybrid-only parking spaces

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

Parking preference for hybrids might be a hit in California, but at a dog track in Daytona Beach, it seems to be causing indifference and frustration.

Do you really expect this to work? Look at all the fat people using handicap parking placards because they are too lazy to waddle a few feet.

This is stupid, like the special parking for customers with children, or pregnant women, who should be walking their fat asses more anyway.

I always park my truck as far away from other cars as possible, so I really don't care. But if businesses start showing preference for prissy Prius owners I will take my biz elsewhere.

i dont think there should be special spaces for hybrids unless its for a specific situation such as a charging station.

I'll just tie my horse to the sign and the next sissy driving a Prius can get up close and personal with the truly renewable fuel source driving this story.

There shouldn't be special places or considerations for anyone EXCEPT the severely handicapped. Most handicaps are a direct result of the people laziness anyway....why not participate in their recuperation by making them EXERCISE a little anyway.

And while we are on "special consideration"...do away with the lame crap about senior citizen discounts, seniors only housing and the like...IT IS DISCRIMINATION PURE AND SIMPLE..BASED ON age

can see it now..........discrimaination because I am too poor to buy a hybrid. haha really I am! But the Honda I bought for 5k is surely better thab the Jeep Cherokee I was driving, right?

Like the above poster I park far out anyway, so I dont care! More exercise for me, and my car doesn't get banged on by idiots.

This is stupid. Why should they allow to park closer if they have a hybrid? Keep the things they are now, regular, police, and handicap spaces.

Have we lost our minds?? I can only hope the handicapped, pregnant, hybrid drivers get their own spots right up front...do they get extra points for being vegans??

I belong to the YMCA. There is "Compact Cars Only" parking near the front....and of course I always end up parking my Corolla next to minivans and SUV's. I don't think it's necessary to have compact parking or hybrid parking because most folks driving the compacts and hybrids (which are obviously small cars) are physically fit folks who don't mind walking a little extra for the exercise.

One last thought: I think people who go to dog tracks are the last people to follow any rules. Dog tracks are awful.

You also need to add that drivers show little respect for handicap spaces, maternity spaces, people-with-infant spaces, compact-only spaces, etc.

Ok so let's get this straight. This is supposed to be some reward for people who buy hybrids. Let's take one hybrid for example, the Chevy Tahoe hybrid. I get better gas mileage in my Chevy Silverado than that hybrid does. We also own a Honda S2000 that gets like 27 mpg and you don't get much more compact than that car. So why are we giving them preferential treatment if the mpg on all hybrids isn't all that great?

I agree wtih daniel above, leave special slots for charging stations when electric cars become more prevalent. Otherwise handicapped parking spots and that's it.

So you tree-hugging bunny lovers get a special place to park your 40-MPG hybrid and I have to park my old planet-killing 52-MPG Geo down at the end of the block? Go suck a coconut.
