The Olympia police department sucks shit and so do the losers that patrol the streets. When it comes to this particular department it's all about how much money they can blood suck from usually honest citizens by issuing needless traffic violations while they totally disregard and do nothing about the REAL crimes going on in olympia. I am ashamed of this department and have zero respect for them.

Like you said it's all about money. When you notice certain streets reducing the speed limit is pretty much because it's easier to pull someone over and that in turn increases fines and more revenue. I've actually seen Olympia police do nothing more than leave notices on the doors of people who have been accused of doing things like exposing themselves in public and with little children in the erea to and they never come back looking for the dude. But, the Oly PD will pull someone over and take them to the slammer if they so much as raise their voice. Doesn't make much sense does it. Everything is about the almighty dollar anymore and the wellfare of individuals is unimportant.
My advice? Get a bike. |

Why should you plead not guilty? Because:
if you appear on trial, the cop might not show up, and the ticket is automatically dismissed; if the cop does show up, with some preparation, you have a chance to win the case; in the worst case, if you lose, you still don't pay more than if you have just pleaded guilty. Technically speaking, pleading not guilty is merely exercising your right to question the prosecution's evidence. You are innocent until your guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. That's the prosecution's job. Unfortunately, the traffic court system has turned into a money making system and you have to prove yourself innocent. If enough people fight it this revenue generating system will collapse. At least, if you fight your ticket, the cop has to go to court and there is one less cop out there writing tickets for the day. If everyone fights their tickets then cops either will have to get off the streets or miss trials. You are not wasting police forces by getting them to courts. Police forces are already wasted by running speed traps in the middle of a highway, unable to respond to emergency dispatch quickly enough. Imagine if your house is being robbed, or your car is being stolen, or your daughter is being raped, and all police officers are too tied up running speedtraps hidden behind a bush, with a radar gun and a cup of coffee in his hands and a donut in his mouth, unable to assist you. By abolishing the ridiculous speed limits police forces can then be restored to do more useful tasks, such as... you guess it... catching real criminals. Please, do everyone a favour, fight your ticket. |

How true.
The oly police abuse quite a bit of power in my own opinion. Ever see the kind of terds that patrol? Half of them look like they're high school dropouts themselves. Police suck, always hiding behind their uniforms. |

Someone who cares about the law abiding citizens. The police seem to be thick as thieves. Recently a person of some importance was barrelling down the street to beat a red light and swerved into the outside lane of a two lane road while the law abiding person was turning onto that road in the correct lane. The law abiding person going about 10 miles an hour and had the front bumper taken off got the ticket. Nepotism or what? Karma will prevail.

Lets not forget that dwls are increasing like the plague. Though I do not encourage dwls I also do not agree that police should be allowed to pull you over because you are dwls. Much of this problem is due to the rediculous fines that are forced upon people to feed the hungry united states traffic court machine.

Hiding being bushes is all that the Olympia police are trained to do. They are not trained enough to handle "real" criminal offenses. I agree with the posts above in that most of these officers are just fat slobs with radar guns. But, as mentioned, it's all about $$. Traffic violations have spiraled out of control and the system makes it almost impossible for people to get back on the right track after they have screwed up.
If I'm low income and just barely getting by and I have to choose between paying 75 dollars for my suspended license to be re-issued and another 20 dollars just to take the written test every time I fail it or feeding my child for the month guess what I'm going to choose. Yep, my kid. This idiot town will never get it. Drive to survive I always say. It's the poor that suffer because they cannot afford these rediculous fines nor the cost of getting their license back again. Screw the Olympia police. |

Without badges to hide behind these fools aren't bad enough to wipe my mothers ass.

The Olympia police department is gay.

Oly police dept is nothing more than a worthless money making machine. If they spent half the time looking for "real" criminals as they do hiding behind buildings and bushes issuing out tickets the city would be much better.

It's like that everywhere now, including here in CA. I'm reading your city's topix seeing if things are any different since I'd like to relocate. I totally agree the priorities should be elsewhere, but generating revenue for the states seems to be the only thing any state government cares about. We are living in sad times and need to fight.

Remember that in WA there is no income tax. So, one of the alternative methods of raising revenue to pay for services, no matter how seemingly unjust those services may be, is to issue speeding tickets. If you have severe doubts about the integrity of the Olympia Police Department, then write an educated letter to your state representative.

Write a letter, HA! Thats a laugh. Just so it can end up in some trashcan.
Your right about the "unjust" part of it though. Olympia is about as unjust as you can get when it comes to screwing it's citizens over. All it does is clog the courts with those who are normally descent people while true criminals hardly spend a day in jail none the less in the courtroom. Eventually this system will completely fall apart if it hasn't already. And regarding the quality of the officers in Olympia? A joke. A bunch of kids playing big shot with a badge thinking they are all that simply because they pull someone over. |

Seems like writing, thinking and researching are too much of an effort for some people. There are many "bad guys" currently incarcerated throughout the state. Traffic stops, however, usually end up materializing into TRAFFIC INFRACTIONS as oppossed to misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors and class-a,b and c felonies. Yes, the criminal justice system in the United States as a whole is under stress, and has been for a long time. Yes, we can improve a lot by making changes. However, you must realize that most of what I have read here is based on discontentment with the State's traffic laws (R.C.W. chapter 46). My thoughts on that: be in compliance and don't speed.

No other way to discribe thurston county police

I don't seem to have a problem with either Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater police or the sheriff department. It's probably because I don't break the law, don't associate with known criminals, and I don't smoke dope or crack. Here's a hint people...you want police to stay off your back, don't break the law. You want police to stay off your back...become a responsible member of society. Quit being leeches.

I was a teenager in Olympia, didn't break laws, and loved to spend my free time in the downtown area (mid 90's). That is where I ran into two notorious usurpers, Doughty and Barcliff... For many, I need not say more. They would stock me, and others, making us empty our pockets, they'd grope our goods, and sometimes even cuff and throw in the car until they decided they couldn't find a reason to take us to jail. There were many more just like them. I ran into a couple OPD that would give you dirty looks just to try to get a response out of you. If you even said "what" they would take you in. Things are not that bad any more. But, not too long ago I went with my girlfriend to the Thurston Count fair and when we returned to her house, my car was smashed in. Windows, fenders, hood, lights, all crushed by a big boot and crowbar. Stereo system was intact, and worth a pretty penny. I had a felling it was her exboyfriend. But guess what happened when I called our good ol' Thurston County Sherriff's office. They asked if I had full coverage insurance and when I said no, they said there was nothing they could do for me. They wouldn't even quesiton her ex, document the damages, or nothing. I went and talked to the guy and he denied it until I said the neighbors saw his truck parked out in front of her house. He then changed his story and he was there and had even gone into the back door of her house and used her phone to call her cell phone (she thought it was her sister calling). So not only could the sherriff had arrested a jealous berserker for destroying my car, he would have gotten a burglary charge too. They are never there when you need them, and spend most of their time earning a dime at our expense.
