Cyber-bullying is a crime and has been defined as "when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person",[2] or as "when an electronic device is used to attack ......or defame the character of a real person. Often embarrassing or false information about the victim is posted in an online forum where the victim and those who know the victim can see it publicly."[3] Other researchers use similar language to describe the phenomenon.[4][5]

Cyber-bullying can be as simple as continuing to send e-mail to someone who has said they want no further contact with the sender, but it may also include threats, sexual remarks, pejorative labels (i.e., hate speech), ganging up on victims by making them the subject of ridicule in forums, and posting false statements as fact aimed at humiliation.

Cyber-bullies may disclose victims' personal data (e.g. real name, address, or workplace/schools) at websites or forums or may pose as the identity of a victim for the purpose of publishing material in their name that defames or ridicules them. Some cyber-bullies may also send threatening and harassing emails and instant messages to the victims, while other post rumors or gossip and instigate others to dislike and gang up on the target.

The practice of cyber-bullying is not limited to children and, while the behavior is identified by the same definition in adults, the distinction in age groups is sometimes referred to as cyberstalking or cyberharassment when perpetrated by adults toward adults, sometimes directed on the basis of sex. Common tactics used by cyber-stalkers are to vandalize a search engine or encyclopedia, to threaten a victim's earnings, employment, reputation, or safety. A repeated pattern of such actions against a target by an adult constitutes cyber-stalking.

If this happens to you....take screen shots of all posts, save emails, phone records, etc. Don't allow yourself to be cyber-bullyed. It is a crime and is punishable by law. It can be stopped.

If someone sends information true or false to others intended to harm you in any way, you can defend yourself legally. Don't allow someone else's behavior online harm you or allow you to become distressed.

Too many people have had their reputations harmed, become depressed and been humiliated because of cyber-bullying. It has also been reported that many kids have committed suicide because of this stuff. Take a stand against this, whether for you or your child. You have a legal right.

FYI: This website has a legal obligation to turn over any and all IP addressess to the authorities that are associated in any manner of cyber bullying. Your IP address is traceable and can be easily identified to its owner!!

I'm actually in the process of contacting the web admin. and filing a complaint. And yes, I hope everyone knows that even though they don't post their name, their IP address will identify them. Hope everyone considers this before posting! Slander is illegal.

My ex-mother-in-law has been attacking me and my character for 4 months. She constantly posts false and negative nasty things about me on a popular online 'friends' community. I have never replied to her and I have never said anything negative about her. I have tracked and printed everything she has said (pages and pages) about me. I live in a little rual town and seriously doubt the local law enforcement would help. What can I do???

Thanks so much, I myself was victimized a few months ago by a psychotic woman who had no idea what was real and what wasn't. She had placed my full name and address everywhere she could along with every name she could call me. I just sat back and let her craziness show itself. The end result was that people started to see that she was "whacko" and childish and her behavior was looked down upon and ignored. The moderators eventually removed her postings, guess she got bored and moved onto the next victim.

We at SlanderGuard can help in these types of situations. It is unfortunately true that you have little legal recourse when someone takes such a selfish action online.

I even talked to our family attorney about it.... Basically you can't do anything about it because chances are, the people making the posts on here don't have any assets or income... Just like 90 percent of Vinton and Jackson County. Can't squeeze blood from a turnip and they won't put them in jail when the steal and destroy so I doubt they jail them for a debt.
