Art Shoemaker to move "fighting yank" soldier statue from Belmont Middle to Stowe Park. According to the Belmont Banner, this is a done deal. Art thinks it will be more visible and safer in the park. I call BS!!! Who in the hell does Art think he is. Protest people. That statue has been on the grounds of Belmont Middle for half a century

And very few people even know it's there. One has to walk through the grass to get a good look or read the inscription. Art's idea is a good one and he's done his homework.

Sounds like a better spot to me too. I've told my kids and their friends (after being at BMS 2-3 years) a few times to meet me by the statue and they always say, "What statue?" LOL

I think it is more susceptible to vandalism in the park. Look at the gazebo how it is treated. I think the presence on the school grounds sends a good message to students. I really see no need to move it. And, does Art own that statue?

The "Yank" was erected to recognize those who so bravely served the USA during WWII. It has nothing to do with "the North".
Also, the plans for moving it to Stowe Park will showcase it as well as preserve it from vandals via a surveilance camera. Landscaping plans are also in the plan. This would also circumvent the possibility of Gaston County Schools relocating and selling the property to private developers in the future as they have done in Gastonia and Cramerton. The entire project in my opinion has only positive, visionary vibes. I am all for it!

1. I still want to know what Art Shoemaker has to do with this decision.
2.Who is going to pay for and maintain this camera? Haas this been discussed in city council? When? how much?
3. I don't think GCS will be selling Belmont Middle School. LOL - that's absurd.
4. I think you took sarcasm as serious in a previous post.

Art has been a mainstay with the American Legion for many years. He has also been in charge of the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame. He plans to speak at the City council meeting in August and from what I understand, he is raising the money to move the statue and prepare the setting. I think they are talking about cameras that are already in the park. It is not absurd that the Middle school might be sold someday. It is the only middle or high school in the county without playing fields for sports. The building is over 70 years old and in horrible shape. Like you when you reach your seventies, it's time to retire.

Art is a patriotic citizen and veteran who has done much good for the community...Sports Hall of Fame, acquired sponsorship for various patriotic events at the American Legion, supporter of American Legion Baseball as well as local public school athletics, member of Belmont Historical House just to cite a few of his interests and activities. Moving the "Yank" will be discussed at the next City Council meeting and the particulars will be shared.
In regard to GCS, have you noted the projected building of the new middle school to built adjacent to Stuart Cramer. Could district school lines be affected? a distinct possibility???? so it is not that absurd in the future.... could the property on which Belmont Middle is located be affected???
I feel that Art has the best of intentions. Please give it a look at the next City Council meeting.

I realize you newcomers don't have any affinity or attachment to those things in our community that are an ingrained part of our history....but that school building will not sold as long as the natives of this town are breathing! You talk about an uproar! That's one thing you Yankees are not going to take away from our community so you can have your " latest and Greatest". You'd see a human chain around that building if such a crazy thing were seriously proposed.

My husband and I are graduates of Belmont High School; we grew up in this town and reared our children here. We love Belmont and support the progress that has continued here. The current Downtown was a vision of Kevin Loftin who was also a native of East Belmont and mayor of Belmont. He inspired many to keep our best foot forward. Art Shoemaker is seeking to perpetuate a similar vision.
Give it a chance. Go to City Council and hear about it first hand.

When's the last time you took a look (or smell-eww) around the inside of BMS. It is in shambles, the boiler room is disgusting and the windows inside are cracked, not to mention the bathrooms are soooo nasty. Ask any of the kids how much they like this old delapidated school and you will get an earful. Trust me I've heard and seen it all from my kids and their friends many times! It's so hot in the winter they wear shorts and said they almost pass out in the band room or old gym-and it's so cold in the summer they wear hoodies and jeans and come home ice cold. And next time you go to the auditorium check out the mold on the ceiling and walls, it's just not right. Probably why the kids are sick all the time.

Maybe you can buy it and turn it into apartments or condominiums like the old Ashley High School or Cramerton School. When the board of education believes it is no longer fit for use as a school it will be sold.

That would be a prime location for some apartments or condos.

Whether you convert the existing building or tear down and rebuild, someone (including the school board) could make some money there.

You are 100% correct & South Point High School isn't any better. That's why everyone is trying to go to Cramerton.
