Couple of observations:
Pricing too high at boutiques.$100+ for a skirt will not work in MH.
Two cake shops. Too much competition, not enough quality.
Coffee shop mostly vacant. Can't imagine it sticking around.
Restauarants of poor food quality.

Back in the day, in the real estate boom times, when every developer was crawling on their knees to our Mayor Black/Hough and City Council for rezoning to be able to put in a subdivision. These visionaries chose to approve every Tom Dick and Harry Starter Home Subdivision that was presented to them. Had these visionaries not approved all of them and held out for more expensive subdivisions, you would have the more affluent, the more disposable income crowd that would support nice restaurants and services......You get what you pay for...............

Odd that you mention there are too many cake shops in Belmont...

In New York City - I'm not from there, but have visited from time to time on regular occassion - All of the Bagel shops are closing down!

Why?

As it was explained to me, it's because everyone is health conscious now.

Which makes sense, as Bagels are a TON of carbs for breakfast. However...

Now there are cupcake shops all over the place!

Makes no sense to me either, but somehow they're doing business, and we're all sitting around complaining about them.

Malcolm, I was referring to Mount Holly, but I agree with your analysis. Einstein

Too many cakeshops? There is not a decent bakery anywhere in driving distance.... not a REAL bakery.

Sugar divas is not a cupcake shop. It's a custom cake shop . Yes they have deserts but their main focus is wedding a special occasion cakes.
