When did Spain and the US go to war? 1898 we fought a war with Spain that lasted 3 Months and the victory gave the US possession of, yes, The Phillipines! We fought a war against the Mexicans in 1846 and annexed Texas as a result. California was CEDED to the US by the last Mexican Governor of California, Pio Pico, coincidentally, Pico Rivera is named after him. There was no war over California, unless you consider John ****. Fremonts actions as part of a war. Although the United States declared war against Mexico in 1846, it took almost two months (until the middle of June, 1846) for definite word of war to get to California. American consul Thomas ****. Larkin, stationed in Monterey, on hearing rumors of war tried to keep peace between the States and the small Mexican military garrison commanded by José Castro. U.S. Army captain John ****. Frémont, with about sixty well-armed men, had entered California in December, 1845, and was marching slowly to Oregon when he received word that war between Mexico and the U.S. was imminent and so began his chapter of the war, the "Bear Flag Revolt".
In 1846, some thirty settlers, mostly American citizens, staged a revolt and seized the small Mexican garrison in Sonoma. They raised the "Bear Flag" of the California Republic over Sonoma. The republic was in existence scarcely more than a week before the U.S. Army, led by Frémont, took over. The California state flag today is based on this original Bear Flag and still contains the words, "California Republic."
Also, when you do read your History, read about The Gadsden Purchase, it will teach you about HOW we acquired New Mexico, not in a war, but with dollars.
The ignorance of most Americans is astonishing!
Thank you for the details. I was being intentionally vague/silly and didn't mean to misrepresent history. There are some folks on this site who think that California was somehow "stolen" from Mexico. I get tired of hearing them talk about how CA should belong to Mexico. If it were part of Mexico, we wouldn't be able to flush our TP or drink the water. I guess we could sell it back, but Mexico couldn't afford to buy it.

Hahaha. You serious? Just shut the computer off for the night. You are embarrassing yourself. Your kids are out running the streets stealing lawn ornaments and robbing gas stations and you are on here trying your luck at comedy. Don't quit your day job, you know, collecting welfare and watching Oprah. It's what you do best.

Can you please get away from the "your mama so ugly" attempts at name calling and let's argue about some facts regarding the underlying story and their impact on our community? Nobody benefits from incessant "u so dumn an you mama is ___" trash. Have a nice day.

Born and raised in Pico, however moved out when I graduated from "THE RANCH", the bottom line growing up you either played sports or you messed around with a gang, PICO RIVERA has probably the best reputation in the area when it comes to youth sports ...PARENTS have that option when it comes to keeping there kids off the streets.....living in PICO you knew some from a gang and yes the gang life in PICO is very appealing and enticing....however I never join the gang....I knew alot of guys from UNSK Tagging Crew and PICO NUEVO and never joined either one of them. IT's all up to the Parents to teach these kids values and what is important in life...If parents don't care what there kids do then they find that love with the gangs.......neverless GOD BLESS everyone.

Two men charged with Pico Rivera killing

PICO RIVERA - Prosecutors filed a murder charge Tuesday against two suspected gang members for the Nov. 19 fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy.
Dennis Flores, 19, and Edward Ortega, are accused of killing Erick Roche whose body was found near the entrance to an alley in the 6400 block of Rosemead Boulevard. All are from Pico Rivera.

The teen, who had been shot in the torso, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In addition to murder, Flores was also charged with possession of a firearm by a felon with a prior conviction, according to Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors further alleged the two men used a gun to commit the crime, that they intentionally fired a handgun which caused great bodily injury to Roche and that the crime was committed for the benefit of, and at the direction of a street gang.

Flores and Ortega are being held without bail at Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles. They will be arraigned Wednesday at Whittier Superior Court.

Sheriff's Homicide Sgt. Jeff Cochran said the shooting seems to be gang-motivated. Ortega and Flores are members of a Pico Rivera gang called Rivera 13, according to Cochran.

"Usually the scenario is, the individuals go to a rival gang area and hit up a person on the street," he said.

Cochran said Roche was probably on his way home alone when he was accosted by the two suspects and shot.

Detectives aren't looking for any other suspects.

Flores and Ortega were already in

custody on unrelated charges when detectives filed a case against them for the shooting of Roche, according to Det. Steve Blagg. He declined to say what those unrelated charges were.
Investigators also wouldn't divulge details on what led them to the two suspects.

Roche attended Salazar High School, a continuation high school under El Rancho Unified School District.

Damn losers, too bad they shut down the boys school on Whittier Blvd. They should renovate it and anyone who looks like a banger should be held and tortured for 3 days.

Glad these fools were finally found out. Now they can ROT.
