Every time I think of this story it still gives me the chills even after all these years. I remember that night very vividly...

This happened to me about sixteen years ago right after I had gotten my drivers license and got to use my dad's car by myself for the first time.

My girlfriend and I were excited to go to a dance at our high school that Saturday night - and I was more then a little nervous about driving the stick shift without Mom or Dad in the car with me as I had a habit of killing the engine when I tried to start it.

It was early October, but the air was still warm and the moon was yellow and in a sickle form. There were dark storm clouds looming over the Wasatch Mountains and moving closer into the Salt Lake valley.

My girlfriend and I went to the dance and had a great time - staying way into the night. When the dance was over and after everyone had been sent away by the dance/school staff we moved on. We drove around looking for some place to go - as the newness of being on our own with the car would not wear off for several more months.

I picked the old grade school that we had both gone to when we were children. We were fairly close to where we lived so we felt safe and there was nothing to worry about except the looming rain clouds. We parked in the parking lot behind the school and walked into the huge grass playing field and the play ground behind the school. The field was lit by one huge stadium type lamp that cast a circle of dim light on the playground and playing field surrounding it.

She and I sat on the swings talking WAY late into the night. It started raining a cool mist that was very pleasant. But after an hour or so it was enough rain to make the ground under us muddy - so we were careful not to stick our feet in the mud (this is important in a minute).

It became quite and we were both very tired by then. We suddenly looked up at the same moment... the hair stood up on the back of my neck... as we both felt the need to look back and over our left shoulders. Something had caught the corner of our eye. About two hundred feet or so away there was SOMETHING crawling on it's stomach out past the shadows edge of the light that the giant stadium bulb gave off.

We both stared in horror not saying anything. We watched as the thing MOVED towards us, just keeping on the boarder of the light shadow. It was humanoid looking - a dark color with no clothes on. It was laying flat on it's belly... it's arms down, held close to it's waist.

But what frightened me the most (besides the fact that it had been coming up behind us) was the way it moved and the structure of it's legs... It was inching forward moving NOTHING but it's feet to push it forward. And the legs... If you look at a normal humans knees - the knees bend forward... This things was reverse - the joint bent BACK and away.(Imagine laying flat on your stomach with your hands pulled in at your sides to your waist and your knees are UP OFF the ground instead of against it.)

We stared for several seconds... we both had stopped breathing and the only sound was the rain falling. The head of the thing looked up and I saw nothing but black pools where the eyes should be...
My girlfriend and I JUMPED off the swings onto the wet grass and lunged into the car about 50 feet away. There was several seconds of panic when I couldn't get the car to start - and I was terrified to look up. I didn't want to see "IT" closing on us - I didn't want to see those knees bending in the wrong direction and the black, soulless eyes. I was afraid I would pop the clutch in the car and not be able to start it again. I kept my head down and looking at the steering wheel. The car engine turned and caught - we tore off into the night.

I called my folks from my girlfriends house and told them about what had happened. They allowed me to stay there with her and her Mom until the sun came up in a few hours. We waited and passed the time by telling her Mother our story - which scared her (as well as my parents) badly.

When the sun came up early that Sunday morning - we drove back to see if "it" was still there. This time bringing weapons. But there was nothing as we searched the field. As we poked around the swings we had been sitting on earlier... there were large bare foot prints that had tracked through the mud ALL AROUND the very swings we were on. We both had - had our shoes ON and as I said before, we were careful NOT to get mud on them. And we HAD NOT walked around and around like these tracks had. We found nothing but those bare tracks.

Every once in a while I get brave enough to go back to that field late at night (never alone though). I sit by the school field side in my truck with the high beams on searching the area, but I've never seen "IT" again...

Sorry for the double post. Stupid Topix.**shakes fist**

There was a man that lived deep in the county on a back road. It being deer season, he had gone out earlier in the day and killed a deer and had been dressing it (gutting it) in his back yard. To do this, most hunters will hang the deer from something called a "single tree" or simply a rope over a larger tree branch in their yard. He had put the guts into a bucket and was going to get rid of them later.

The night was rather cold and the man could hardly sleep for some reason. He took his guitar out onto his porch and sat playing softly. His hunting dogs were penned up behind his home, and as he sat playing, a strange feeling came over him. Something was wrong, but he couldn't quite figure out what it was. He stopped playing and just sat...listening....

There was nothing. Not a sound. No crickets chirping. No frogs...just the sound of his breathing.

Suddenly the dogs came running around from the back yard. He wondered how they had gotten out of their pen. He sat his guitar down and started to go look around back, but he noticed that his dogs were acting frightened, each with its tail tucked between its legs. They ran quickly to an opening beneath the house and ran under there. He looked around the corner of the house to where they had just ran from and saw the most horrid thing he had ever seen in his entire life.

The light in his backyard shown down on a creature that was nearly ten feet tall, hovering over the roof of his tool shed. It had long, white, matted, stringy, dirt-ridden hair. No sooner had he laid eyes upon it than it reared it's head back and started screaming like a baby cries, but the cry grew in intensity and volume until he thought he could bear it no more. The scream was now at an extremely high pitch and the hair on the back of his neck was standing on end.

The thing was after his dogs and was now headed straight for him.

He was paralyzed with fear, frozen to the spot. The thing moved slowly in his direction at first, then it stopped...and looked straight at him. At this point he knew if he didn't move he was going to surely be attacked by this thing and probably die. He ran to his front door and as he ran inside , he heard the creature leap for the porch and hit the railing. He then heard it scramble to it's feet..or hooves...

He could hear the hooves on the wooden boards of the porch. He got inside and as he finally got the door shut and locked it, he had no more than locked the door when the creature's claws began to scratch at the wood. There was a small window in the top of the door, and as he peered through it, he saw the creature was looking back at him. The pitch of the thing's screams were rattling all the glass in the house. The creature was trying desperately to get in.

All night long, the creature paced back and forth across the porch stopping at windows and slashing at the screens with its claws. There he sat, in the living room, holding his rifle waiting for the creature to find a way inside. As the sun started to come up, he realized he didn't hear anything.

All was quiet.

He waited until the sun was up and went out with his rifle to investigate. He could see where the creature had entered his yard by its hoof prints in the ground and where it had gone to his single tree and ripped down the deer and ate it. The bucket was licked clean and the deer guts were gone. His dog pen had been ripped in two and he saw where his dogs had dug their way out under the other side of the pen, barely escaping the ravenous creature.

Local lore tells that long ago, there was a man who lived with his family in a valley in White Bluff. For several nights, he kept hearing this horrible loud pitched scream. He finally had enough, and ran and got his gun to permanently shut up whatever was making the noise. He and his dogs left the house to search for the source of the noise.

As he headed out, his dogs ran far ahead of him. Thinking they were going after the screamer, he was happy. A few minutes later, however, they ran back whimpering with their tails between their legs.

Undaunted, the man continued his search. Eventually he heard the screams again, except this time it was his wife and children screaming. He rushed back to the house as fast as he could, but was too late. Laying on the floor were the bodies of his wife and children, which had been torn to shreds. Another version of this tale does not include the deaths of his family, but his otherwise unchanged.

It's said that you can still see the foundation of the house where this event took place. The White Screamer is said to be a misty apparition, and after it appears it will leave evidence of it's presence in the form of burnt patches of grass.

An investigation on the subject goes as follows. This is copied from my files I have saved on disc:

The team’s first case was the legend of the white screamer, and it took the team to a rural area of the county where farmers reported hearing strange noises. The legend had been passed down through generations.

“We talked to people that lived around there that had supposedly heard the white screamer,” Diamond said.“We got an idea and one of our paranormal experts basically profiled this creature and said what they thought it was, what specter they thought it was.”
The “team” set up special equipment to record whatever might be heard at the site.

“Well, when we did that we waited until the time of night it typically was heard and we had the right conditions. We didn’t hear anything. We walked down this road where a young couple had encountered this ghost and then we did hear something. It was a scream and we got it on recording.”

The team later heard other noises closer to their vehicles and their equipment.

“We ran back to see what it was and all of our stuff had been turned over and rifled through,” Diamond said.“We didn’t know if it was legitimate or if it was somebody playing a trick on us.”

Of course, when the team examined the videotape later that night they saw an apparition on the tape that wasn’t there during the actual investigation.

“It looked ethereally like the ghost of a woman,” he said.“We didn’t alter the tape any, we don’t do that sort of thing. We don’t know what it was.”

These are both tales of the White Screamer of White Bluff Tennessee.

Despite the name, the Bell Witch is usually classified as a poltergeist, although it did a lot of unpoltergeistlike things. Most notably it talked, and once the talking began, he “witch” became downright garrulous. It might also be classed as a ghost or haunting, but it was certainly not a witch. However, back in the early nineteenth century, when this series of phenomena took place, all strange and unexplained events of this type were automatically assumed to be the products of demons or witchcraft in rural areas of America.
The tale of the Bell Witch began in 1817 on the farm of John Bell in Robertson County, Tennessee. This part of Tennessee was no longer frontier country in 1817, but families still tended to live in isolated farmhouses, mother, father, four sons, and a daughter lived in a plain two-story farmhouse. A small number of slaves lived in outbuildings. Two older children who had already married and moved away but not very far. The Bells were considered moderately prosperous and as far as can be determined were well liked by their neighbors.
As in so many poltergeist cases, the disturbances began slowly. There were strange noises, the rappings and scratchings so typical of poltergeists. At about the same time John Bell reported seeing a strange animal. It looked like a dog, yet it didn’t look like a dog. He got his gun and took a shot at it but missed. There was also something that looked like a turkey or some other large bird seen near the house. He couldn’t shoot it either. The noises got worse.
More ominous manifestations began. The thing was growing physically violent. At first it just pulled covers off beds, then, according to an account written years later by Richard Williams Bell, the youngest member of the family, it began “slapping people on the face, especially those who resisted the action of pulling the cover from the bed and those who came as detectives to expose the trick. The blows were heard distinctly, like the open palm of a heavy hand, while the sting was keenly felt and it did not neglect to pull my hair, and made Joel (another son) squeal as often.” But the chief target of the witch seemed (at this stage anyway) to be Betsy (Elizabeth Bell) the one girl in the family. She was about twelve years old at the time.
At first the family tried to keep the strange events secret, not a difficult task since there were near neighbors. But as the witch’s activities continued and grew worse, secrecy became harder to maintain. John Bell was so affected that he began to act strangely when visiting friends. When invited to a friend’s house for dinner, he barely spoke or ate. Later he explained,“All of a sudden my tongue became strangely afflicted. Something that felt like a fungus growth came on both sides, pressing against my jaws, filling my mouth so that I could not talk.”
Finally the Bells were driven to ask for help. They called a James Johnson a neighbor, friend, and a man known for his great piety and vigor as a lay preacher. Johnson visited the Bell house, heard the noises, and decided there definitely was some sort of evil presence at work. He returned with a committee of local residents whose job it apparently was to see if one of the Bells were perpetrating a hoax. The committee decided that there was no hoax, but they hadn’t the faintest notion as to what was going on. As strict Protestants they didn’t believe in ghosts so they called the thing a “witch” and the name stuck.

As news of the Bell Witch spread, more and more people came to help the afflicted family or simply to look just because they were curious. The witch seemed encouraged by all the attention, and its (the witch was always referred to as it) efforts became more vigorous and varied. It began answering questions by means of a rapping code. Then it slowly acquired the ability to speak.
According to the principal account of the Bell Witch phenomenon,“It commenced whistling when spoken to, in a low, broken sound, as if trying to speak in a whistling voice, and in this way progressed developing until the whistling sound was changed to a weak, flattering whisper uttering indistinct words. The voice, however, gradually gained strength in articulating and soon the utterances became distinct in a low whisper so as to be understood in the absence of any other noise.”
The witch’s voice got louder and more persistent until it could be heard shrieking about the house at practically any time of the day or night.
Naturally the first question that everyone wanted the witch to answer was who or what it was. To this the witch gave several contradictory answers.
“I am a spirit from everywhere, Heaven, Hell and the Earth, I’m in the air, in houses, any place at any time. I’ve been created millions of years. That is all I will tell you.” That was one answer.
Another was,“I am the spirit of a person who was buried in the woods nearby and the grave has been disturbed and my bones scattered, and one of my teeth was lost under the house. I’ve been looking for that tooth.” That is the traditional troubled-spirit type of haunting. The Bells spent a lot of time digging around the house looking for the missing tooth until the witch informed them it was all a joke.

Another explanation given by the witch was “I am the spirit of an early immigrant who brought a large sum of money and buried my treasure for safekeeping until needed. In the meantime I died without divulging the secret and I have returned in the spirit for the purpose of making known the hiding place. I want Betsy Bell to have the money.” This sent the Bells off digging once again, but the witch laughed at them for being so easily taken in.
The explanation which most caught the attention of the people of Robertson County was the witch’s assertion that “I am nothing more nor less than old Kate Batts, witch.” Kate Batts was a local woman with a loud voice, foul temper, and something of a grudge against John Bell. She may have had the reputation of being a witch, though she was also known for her endless quoting of Scripture. Many people began referring to the Bell Witch as Kate. The problem was that Kate Batts was very much alive at the time. While people may have gossiped about how she somehow was responsible for the phenomenon, it is doubtful if too many took it seriously. Kate Batts was never attacked by the Bells or their neighbors, and they surely would have done so if they believed that she was responsible for all their troubles.
While the witch was not clear about identity, it was terribly clear about purpose, which was to destroy “Old Jack Bell.” Just why it hated Bell so violently was never made entirely clear. On the other hand the witch adored John’s wife, Lucy, or Luce, extolling her virtues while threatening and damning John.

The witch also took a new interest in Betsy. Joshua Gardner, a young man who lived nearby, announced that he intended to marry the girl, though in fact, she was still too young to marry. The witch didn’t even like the announcement. First it pleaded with Betsy not to marry Gardner, and when that didn’t work, it tormented her with punches, slaps, and by giving her fainting fits. When a friend of Gardner’s came over, the witch kept screaming at him and threatening him. Betsy never did marry Joshua Gardner.
The witch did not confine its interests to the Bell family alone. It took to gossiping about everyone in the area. No one was safe from the witch’s malicious tongue. The pious James Johnson was referred to as “Old Sugar Mouth.”
Yet the Bell Witch did not profess to be entirely godless. On a couple of occasions it was reported to have been repeated the minister’s Sunday sermon word for word after church.
The Bell Witch continued its activities for three years, and the strain began to tell on the family, most particularly on John Bell. His health declined. He visited a doctor who gave him a variety of medicines, but none of them seemed to really help. On the morning of December 19, 1820, Bell lapsed into a coma. One of his sons rushed to the cabinet where the medicines were kept, but instead of the usual bottles he found “a smoky looking vial, which was about one-third full of a dark colored liquid.” The doctor was sent for, but the witch announced that it was too late.“It’s useless for you to try to revive Old Jack. I’ve got him this time. He’ll never get up from that bed again.” When asked about the bottle with the strange-looking liquid, the witch said,“I put it there and gave Old Jack a big dose out of it last night while he was fast asleep, which fixed him.”
The liquid in the bottle was tested on a cat, and the cat died instantly. John Bell lingered a bit longer. He died the following day. The witch was overjoyed. Even during the funeral the air was filled with loud and derisive shouts and songs.
After the death of John Bell, the witch gradually lost interest in the family. One night several months after Bell’s funeral, the living room of the Bell house was suddenly filled with smoke. From the midst of the cloud the witch shouted,“I am going and will be gone for seven years. Goodbye to all!”
Seven years later the witch did make a brief return. By that time Betsy was gone, she had married a former schoolmaster turned politician. He was much older than she was and much richer. John Bell, Jr. had also married and moved away. But John Bell’s widow and three sons remained in the house. For about two weeks they were plagued with strange noises and something that pulled off bedclothes, but there were no voices. The married son, however, said that he heard a voice announcing that the witch would come again in one hundred and seven years. The prophesied year was 1934, but none of John Bell’s living descendants reported any strange incidents that year.

The Bell Witch story is a remarkable one, but how much truth is in the tale? Some twenty-six years after the Bell Witch first made itself known, Richard Williams Bell (usually called Williams) set down his recollections. The book was never intended for publication, but in 1891 Williams’s son Allen turned the manuscript over to a writer named M. V. Ingram, who rewrote it and published it as An Authorized History of the Famous Bell Witch, The Wonder of the 19th Century, an Unexplained Phenomena of the Christian Era. The Mysterious Talking Goblin That Terrorized the West End of Robertson County, Tennessee, Tormenting John Bell to His Death, The Story of Betsy Bell, Her Lover and the Haunting Sphinx, Clarksville, Tenn. As the lengthy title indicates, the book was written in the melodramatic and sensational style that was popular in the penny dreadfuls of the time.
The other source of information on the Bell Witch comes from a pamphlet, The Bell Witch, A Mysterious Spirit, written by Charles Bailey Bell, M.D., great-grandson of the unfortunate John Bell. This was published in 1934. Dr. Bell said he got much of the information from Betsy herself. She lived to the age of eighty-three and was apparently very fond of relating old Bell Witch tales.
The problems of evidence are obvious. Williams would have only been six years old when these events began, and he wrote his memories down many years later. Even then we have his memories filtered through the work of a sensationalist writer. Charles Bell may or may not have been relying on the stories of a very old woman.
Still something probably happened to begin the Bell Witch legend in the first place. Except for the witch’s speech, most of the other phenomena attributed to it are typical of the poltergeist.
Another typical feature is that the manifestations seemed to center around a young person, in this case twelve-year-old Betsy. During the manifestations Betsy often appeared to faint. Some of the Bells’ neighbors apparently suspected that Betsy was responsible for the phenomena. They tried to test her in a variety of ways. For example, at one point a doctor clamped his hand over Betsy’s mouth while the voice of the witch was heard, to make sure Betsy was not “throwing her voice.” According to the accounts, Betsy passed all the tests, but the accounts may not be entirely reliable. Betsy certainly could have not been responsible for al the phenomena if they happened a reported.
Finally, did Betsy Bell actually contrive to kill her own father? She was never prosecuted for it, much less convicted. Possibly John Bell simply died from natural causes during this period and local gossip immediately assumed that the famous witch was responsible. The case remains an enigma.

As a small child I spent a lot of time staying the weekends over at cousins or at my Grandmother's house. I was staying the night at my cousin's house one Friday night when I had a truly horrifying experience.

I was about ten or eleven years old and my cousins and I had stayed up playing Atari and watching television fairly late the night before. They were both girls, so I, being male and a couple of years younger, was sleeping in a different room than they were (teenage girls and their privacy). Anyway, I was trying to go to sleep when I thought I saw one of my cousins coming down the hallway through the open bedroom door. It looked like she was crawling, kind of slinking along the floor. I figured she was trying to creep up on me and scare me so I half shut my eyes, still peeking down the hall, doing the "Hide and Seek squint cheat", you know what I'm talking about. But as I squinted, I kind of lost track of where she was, because after all, it WAS kind of dark.

I opened my eyes a bit more and was peering down the hall and saw her stand up. Only it wasn't my cousin, and it wasn't quite standing. It kind of looked like a little kid that had fallen down while crawling and was trying to get up but could only get as far as up on it's hands, arms and chest and was kind of writhing there in the hallway.

I got really freaked out and shut my eyes so tight that it caused those purple spider-web lights to shoot across my eyelids. Then I heard it coming up the hall.

I opened my eyes again at the sound.

It caught the moonlight spilling forth from the room I was in and looked like a horribly malformed, misshapen child, nude except for a diaper, hobbling towards the bedroom door. It was looking straight at me.

I figured it was another of the many funky things I saw as a child, so I shut my eyes tightly again and I still heard it coming. Opening my eyes I could see it had reached the entryway to the bedroom and was still looking straight at me with its twisted features. Then its gnarled lips curled into a salivating grin and it raised one of it's mongoloid arms and pointed a stubby crooked finger at me. Then raised both of its arms and came limping towards the bed as if it wanted me to pick it up like an infant.

The room got really cold and started to stink VERY badly.

At this point I was petrified.

I squeezed my eyes shut tightly praying for it to go away. Just then, I felt a pressure on the bed. Something was crawling in bed with me. I opened my eyes one last time to see it on the bed with me no more than six inches from me trying to reach toward my chest and drooling and looking at me with that look and screamed my head off, then blacked out.

Try imagining seeing this next time you go to sleep with your bedroom door open. I can't sleep with an open door ANYWHERE AROUND. Closet, bathroom or otherwise...

When I was I guess about five or so, I remember waking up in the middle of the night and seeing a boy with red hair and freckles staring blankly from across the room at me. There was what appeared to be a light of some sort in his lap and it was shining up on his face. He had kind of kinky curly hair and was wearing a thin striped blue and white shirt. He didn't blink or even move, just stared ahead, almost looking through me.

Then I saw what I believe was his dad.

He was crouching next to him, where the boy was sitting huddled in the corner of my room, glaring at his son and the boy began shivering. What looked like ice or some kind of wet slimy stuff started to cover the boy and he was shaking and his lip was protruding a bit like when a kid pouts. The boy clenched his tiny fists (he appeared to be about eight or so) and shivered and just stared straight at me. His dad turned his head ever so slowly and looked at me and just stared like he hated me. The vivid memory of this haunts me still, the look on his dad's face and the fear that just poured out of the kid. I felt like I wanted to just burst into tears right then.

I screamed for my Mom or Dad to come in the room (their room was next to mine) and my Dad came in. He was mad that I had disturbed them and told me to shut up or he'd give me something to be scared of. I laid back in my bed and just stared at the boy shivering covered in that clear, wet, shiny mess with his dad staring at me and I closed my eyes tight, covering my head with my blankets. After awhile, I went to sleep.

I slept like that many nights...

Remember the house that you did on Farthing street and the scream you got on the recorder?
