Yes. I am one of his relatives. Derek is very sick mentally and he did kill his father a little over four years ago. It has been extremely difficult for the family. The father, Anthony [Sam]Keeling,died in Derek's sister's arms and she is scared from this trauma. We hope Derek stays in jail and/or a mental health facility for life, so he will not harm anyone else; he is very dangerous because of his mental health.

Derek was a good friend of mine in high school and it hurts to remember him back them and look at him now. Hopefully he will get the help he needs and one day be mentally healthy again.

I know a little bit about Derek and last time I saw him I can honestly say that he's not faking his mental illness the way many people do.

guy is really bad off.

stabbed another inmate with a pencil while he was sleeping didn't he?

It will be five years on May 29 that my brother stabbed and killed my father. It was a Saturday, the morning after my older sisters graduation. This came as a shock to ALL of us. My brother is VERY mentally ill. This extreme act of violence was not an act of rage, nor was it intentional. He is sick!! We continue to search out the help in which he needs, to someday be able to cope with his illness. Please remember him in your prayers, for Gods plan will be carried out whether we see it in this lifetime or not.-Derek's baby sis

No, it was me. He tried to kill me because he wanted me to be "reborn" so he could take care of me and shield me from the pains of life. At least that is what he said at the time. He was zoned out, like he didn't know what was going on and was very upset after he did it... worried about me. I had to go down to the jail so he could see for himself I was ok.
The following year, he was picked up on a weapon's charge and told the officials he had killed his dad then, but he didn't at that time.
It is 6 years in May since the tragic event that took his father's life occurred. He is SUPPOSED to finally go to trial May 4, 2010. The state of Kentucky really doesn't know what to do with him. He is extremely sick, however in order for a person in his situation to be placed in a long-term mental facility, they have to be tried and be found guilty and placed in the prison's psychiatric facility.
The problem with Derek is that they have not been able to adequately deem him competent to stand trial. He is still an extremely intelligent person, so the prosecutor say he is. But his brain just does not operate on the "normal" level that is required to really understand that he has done anything wrong or the consequences.
If they can't find him competent, they can't try him. It is a catch-22 in the judicial system. The state really has no solid answers on how to deal with a case like this.
To this day, Derek still insists it was self-defense. I can see in his mind how he might of thought it to be, even if it was only in his mind.
Thank you to all of you that have been a support to his sisters and myself over the years. Always remember my son for the wonderful boy he was, not the illness that has taken over his mind. It is not his fault. I know he has a greater purpose in life, I just don't know what it is. It is not my place to second guess The Lord's plan. But, perhaps someone, somewhere will remember him as they decide their life's purpose and create a cure for schitzophrenia or some other dreaded disease. I just have to have faith in God's plan.

I went to school with Derek and he was a great person. We use to have so much fun in class. It was about the 10th or 11 th grade when he started to act "strange". Did he get some bad drugs or something? Its so heartbreaking to hear something like that about someone with so much potential. I see the boys that he use to hang with on Facebook, and they are all grown with families. I know that would've been him except this tragedy

I CAN SEE WHY DEREK IS THE WAY HE IS HELL IF I HAD A MOTHER LIKE CAROLYN (she's a snitch)I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT, I FEEL SORRY FOR DEREK AND HE'S NOT AS SICK AS HIS MOTHER CLAIMS, THAT'S A DEFENSE TO TRY AND KEEP HIM OFF DEATH ROW AND GET HIM A LIGHTER SENTENCE. NOT GONNA WORK.

Wow! I see that you aren't brave enough to put your real name on here. Apparently you really don't know that much about who I am or what I'm about. Nor do you know anything about my son. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if my son weren't sick and he did these things, I would advise to throw the book at him. I've always told my children that if "you do the crime, you do the time".

As much as I love my son, I don't want him out. I just do not believe prison is the place for him. He belongs in a facility that can handle someone with his illness. He is a danger to himself and others. You can ask anyone I've spoken to about this subject and they will tell you that this is something I have sadly had to support since my son's illness took over his life.

Schitzophenia is a familia (but not technically genetic) disease that starts in young men around the later teens early twenties. And by the way, there are none in MY family.

I've never claimed to be the most perfect parent in the world, nor the best person. I've done my best with what God gave me. I've also never claimed that any of my children were perfect either, but for the most part my other children are good people that strive to do their best and I love them all, even with their faults.

I would never disrespect someone like you have while hiding my identity. If I have something to say about you, I will say it to your face or at least admit who I am if I bring it to a public forum such as this.

I don't know what you're talking about, me being "a snitch", but I try very hard not to fall into the world of things that need to be "snitched" on.

I am saddened that you felt the need to talk about something that you know absolutely nothing about.

ps. know your statutes. Derek's crimes do not fit the law for a death penalty case anyway:

In Kentucky, the death penalty is not a possible punishment in every murder case. Under Kentucky law, the death penalty only applies in murders in which an aggravating circumstance exists.
What is an aggravating circumstance? The death penalty is a possible punishment in the following aggravated murders:

A murder committed by a person who has a prior conviction for a capital offense, or who has a substantial history of serious assaultive convictions;

A murder which occurs during the commission of the following crimes:
Arson First Degree,
Robbery First Degree,
Burglary First Degree,
Rape First Degree,
Sodomy First Degree;

A murder which occurs as a result of a destructive device, weapon or other device which would normally be hazardous to more than one (1) person;

A murder committed for money or profit;

A murder of a prison guard (on duty) by a prisoner;

An intentional murder of more than one (1) person;

An intentional murder of a:
State or local public official,
Police officer,
Sheriff, or Deputy Sheriff, while in the line of duty;

A murder of a victim, while the victim was protected from the murderer by a:
Emergency Protective Order (EPO),
Domestic Violence Order (DVO),
Or, any other order designed to protect the victim.

God Bless you and your family. Mental illness is just that...an illness. In this case, it has caused such pain for your family and the community, but he is to be sent love and forgiveness and prayers that he receive any help that is available for such an illness. The spirit never dies, so you will see him again if not in this life. There is love here for you and and your family.

I met Derek about 12 years ago through a friend. He was such a cutie. I just remember him having the most beautiful eyes and dark curly hair. He always made me laugh. I really hope and pray that Derek will be given the help he needs and deserves.

God Bless
