Graves County citizens while your children and grand children
have been out of school for the summer your School Board Officials have been busy hiding and plotting planning a secret attack against the citizens of Graves County.

All of the trips of the board officials have taken up and down the roads are going to prove way more expensive than just reimbursement cost. The schools Board members have devised a plan to increase your taxes under the guise of a needed replacement of the air conditioning system at the high school.

Sounds like a worthy project you would say. Maybe so if there had been an explanation of the overspending of approx.$1-1.5 million by your school board members / officials for last year.

The real reason the tax increase is needed is the boards travel- vacation money is running low.

Don't degrade buzzards like that. Buzzards work hard for their living and, face it, they have a rough job. They perform a necessary service and get no respect. The eagle, on the other hand, is nothing but a prima donna celebrity elevated to superstar status based solely on its looks. It just lives off everybody else, gets protection, gets perks. Call it what it is - a Graves County Eagle!

Do people living in the city limits have to pay city and county taxes both? Does this include the county school tax?

Do you realize that GC teachers haven't had a raise in about 8 years now? Teachers in ALL surrounding districts make more money than the ones educating YOUR children. If you want to keep good teachers, you've got to be willing to pay them!

I totally agree with the teacher pay issue. The bunch of LULU's on the school board and or officials have showed no respect or support for teachers in the past 8 years. Why would they start now?

These same board members /officials went against advise of the county financial officer, knew what they were doing and over spent to the tune of
1-1.5 million dollars.

They need to come clean before receiving any additional money no blame game just confess the facts. Some of the professional school board politicians need the boot, no they need to resign.

Well, there is a new chief accountant (I believe this is year 2 for him) and a new super. Maybe these changed have encouraged the change. How far back does the over-spending go?

The overspending dates back to the prior financial officer who WARNED the board members and board office officials of questionable decisions regarding spending. As you brought in an earlier post it certainly wasn't being spent on teachers salaries.

It appears that certain board members have violated their duties and responsibilities as elected officials. They knowingly were spending money they didn't have now creng the need for a tax increase.

Not sure. Other than Paducah and McCracken, GC pays higher than average for region. Also right now Graves has nearly the lowest tax rates in the entire state. That extra 7 bucks a year won't kill you. Graves and Mayfield both have solid school systems and deserve your support. You are blessed compared to some other nearby districts. If you have a prob with supt or board travel, voice your opinion and get you a new board member.

Anyone see the Mayfield messenger Thursday.

Second page bottom left hand corner TAX Increase

I'm not sharp at math but over a 20% increase in the school tax.

Where we pay a little or a lot in taxes doesn't matter.

When these school board members were elected they were not elected to be yes people. Board members accepted responsibility to oversee the finance
of the district were correctly spent.

If the district went into insolvency the state would take over the district. Rather than being insolvent the board passes their responsibilities on to the tax payer.

How long can this continue?

The board refuses to make critical financial decisions because of one member who dominates the Board.

This member has made known political inspirations other than being a school board member.

If this person can't make smart decisions for the district due to political aspirations then this needs to be reported to the state for neglect of duty and removed from this position.

The board members knowingly take extended vacations prior to and after their school board duties at the districts expense

The teachers haven't been given a raise in over five years and will not get one under this tax increase.

The Board overspent in the last two years to the tune of 1-1.5 million dollars . What was it spent on? The board was told they were making reckless spending decisions and voted to do it even after being warned.

It's time the School Board understands they are accountable in their elected position.

Re-read my message. I don't have an issue with the board or with the super. I do have issue with people complaining about a potential tax increase which could increase teacher pay.

Whether we pay a little or a lot in taxes doesn't matter....Really? My kids go to Graves. I'm not college educated, neither is my husband. We work HARD every day of the week for our family. There is no work here, don't know where or what my kids are going to do after graduation. I do know this. The teachers have a job. The school board members have a job. Most of the folks in graves county are like us, that means they struggle to survive. I don't want a school tax increase for any reason. That tax is added on to every bill we pay. It's not our fault the board overspent. It's not our fault teachers that are lucky enough to have a job haven't had a raise in 5 years. Graves county doesn't need or want a tax increase.

Sue till you turn blue this Board can levy the tax rate at whatever level they want (within certain parameters) and you can't do a thing.

The only possible way to do anything is to demand a full accounting of the boards actions by filing a complaint with the state.

This claim would be based off school board members violating their elected duties by knowingly (after being warned) spent the school district into the red.

This spending was done in order to justify the tax increase now being put in place.

Shouldn't be hard to prove they were warned about their decisions.

It's a done deal. And sorry to say there will be no pay increase for employees just a huge increase in insurance premiums.

Are there any plans to get a petition going to fight this unnecessary tax increase? Why is it that the July Consumer Price Index (CPI) 1.4% above the 2013 Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) baseline; yet this School Board and Superintendent says they need to increase the Graves County School taxes by 6.1%! Doesn't anyone see anything ironic about this excessive tax increase proposal?

Why are there NOT any discussions about REDUCING unnecessary costs instead? There are far too many unnecessary expenditures now -- School Board members, Superintendent, Legal Adviser, Teaching Staff travel all over the U. S. to what this taxpayer would describe as “exotic” places as San Francisco, San Diego, Orlando, FL, Boston, MA and many, many other places -- all at our taxpayers expense.

Why do some, if not all of these travelers need to be reimbursed for valet parking at each of these questionable travel boondoggles?

How about reducing staff? There seems to be far too many assistants for the assistants to supervisors for the management. In other words: far too many chiefs and far too few Indians.
Does the Superintendent have a taxpayer issued vehicle provided to her for her personal use? If so, why? She is a public servant, and public servants should not be issued government vehicles payable by the public she is supposed to be serving. If a public servant needs a government vehicle, why can’t they simply pickup a government vehicle at their place of employment (i.e., the Board Office).

How about looking at how Construction and Service contracts are administered? Simply voting yeah and nah at Board meeting for contracts committing public funds for substantial amounts deserve much more attention and discretion rather than simple floor votes.

There are many, many other great ideas that would help to reduce costs, if only the School Board members and Superintendent were willing to discuss them.

I wonder how many Graves County taxpayers received a 6.1% pay increase? This taxpayer sure didn’t, but boy wouldn’t it be nice?

Sure sounds like the Geico advertisement has it right: It definitely is time to think out of the box.

This tax does not need to happen. The school board has become to greedy and what do they have to show for it. I am all for helping the kids but is this going for that? I also think in these hard economic times is it wise to do this to parents and to people who pay there taxes?
