Mayfield woman warns of door-to-door scam
http://www.wpsdlocal6.com/home/ticker/Mayfiel...
MAYFIELD, Ky.- When Valerie Tedder got a call from her mother that a door-to-door vacuum sales person was at her house and wanted to clean her carpets, Tedder asked to speak with the sales person.
Then, she said against her better judgment, she told her mother to allow it. It wasn't until the next day when she got a frantic phone call from her mother that she knew she made a big mistake. Two of her mother's rings were gone and now she believes the vacuum sales pitch was all a scam.
"I think they were scouting, of course that's my theory, but I think were scouting and seen the two rings sitting out and thought BINGO," she said.
Tedder said the woman sales person, who was a short, small built woman with reddish-tinted dark hair, was soon joined by three other people. Another woman and two men came with the vacuum and immediately started moving a table out of the way. Tedder said the rings were on that table in a box.
Tedder's mom was asked to get her current vacuum and when she returned they finished cleaning and then left. It wasn't long before she noticed the rings were missing.
The jewelry is valuable, but recently became priceless because Tedder's father passed away a few weeks ago. One of the rings belonged to him. Now, not even the timing of the sales team seems like a coincidence.
"I think they are looking in the papers to see the obituaries," she said.
Tedder said they filed a report with the Mayfield Police who have alerted local pawn shops, but says if just one other person thinks twice before opening their door it might ease her loss.

They have been going door to door in Wingo, also! It was a woman at my door with dark hair. I would not let her in. Now, I'm glad I didn't.
Sorry people

I wish they would come to my door! I can not stand people who scam elderly people. The report said that they thought they were checking the obituaries to find people to rob. That's about as low as it gets, trolling for recent widows to steal from. Please come knock on my door!!!

If ANYBODY SEES THEM PLEASE TAKE A PICTURE OF THEM WITH YOUR CELL PHONE. AND WARN ALL THE ELDERLY PEOPLE THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THEM.

This is why people in large cities don't post a lot of personal info in obits.

Back when I was a kid 50 plus years ago most people round here got their water from wells. There was a scam where a couple of guys calling themselves "State Well Inspectors" would go to an elderly person's house, look at the well, and then tell the person that they were accessing a "fine" on the person for some made up violation of state water laws. An old man in my neighborhood put the quietus on them. They came to his house, went into the well house, and then the old man backed his pickup truck against the door so that they couldn't get out, got in his car, and went to visit his daughter in Nashville for a week. The two dudes were on a "water, sorry no bread" diet for a week.

So how long did he go to jail for unlawful imprisonment?
