In 1986 I was on route 7 in Grayson County about 30 miles south of I-64, when rounding a corner there was a Mountain Lion, in the other lane headed for the brush. From the tip of it's nose to the tip of it's tail it took the entire lane. Not a house cat, not a Bobcat, a Mountain Lion. Looking at a map today I see it was in the vicinity of a Wildlife Refuge area. At the time I wanted to turn around and get a photo but realized no wild animal is going to wait and pose for me. I kept this to myself for many years for the following reasons.
I understand the reluctance of professional biologists and wildlife management to deny the existence of Mountain Lions in the east. They feel a bit protective, not wanting to see idiots in the woods hunting them down. Also there is some jealousy in not being the one to confirm a sighting. And last, they know some reports are fantasy for lack of a better word. But this one was real and very impressive. There is nothing like a large cat to inspire awe.

They're called coy dogs and they're harmless. I had one for 11 years until some coyote huntin nut-job shot my dog. There has been one documented proven attack of a coyote against a human since records started being kept. Coyotes eat field mice, birds, stuff like that. They are shy and not much of a threat to livestock, but they will attack and kill house cats and small dogs.

They killed a family's dog that was tied to a tree right at their house while the lady of the house saw from their window in brewers in very recent times. I was told it happened in daylight hours also. They get hungrier as more of them have to crowd into decreasing hunting areas, and the "shy" fades away in favor of survival. They WILL attack larger animals (usually deer but can be livestock or could even be humans if chance allows ) that are injured or somehow unable to escape or fight.

I have seen a black panther in Livingston Co. My friend took a pic recently of a cougar up around Carrsville. I posted it on the Grand Rivers homepage. Check it out. I think he got the pic with a trail cam. This was taken just last week.

I know for a fact that there are wolves in the area. I was coming from Paducah to Mayfield on Highway 45 and encountered 4 wolves. 2 of them had already crossed the road and were waiting for the other 2 which was on the opposite side of the road. I started praying that I did not run out of gas, break down or have a flat. If I had, I guarantee I would have waited for some law enforcement officer. The weather is changing so much , that it driving these animals out of their habitats and we need to watch and avoid encounters. Wish it had not been dark so i could have taken a picture.

You probably saw some coyotes, wolf-like domestic dogs like large huskies, or maybe some cross of the two. There aren't wolves in the wild anywhere closer than Michigan as far as I know.
