Great thinking by Robert Peters....the DOE/state already pays for medical/health coverage so ask the teachers to get their drug testing done when they go for their annual check up....so easy!! Kids have to provide TB test before they enter school.

Oahu-at-Large BOE seats tend to be more influential than outer island seats.
From the responses above, there is hope for
NEW BLOOD!
Janis Akuna
Robert Peters
Pauline Namuo
Marcia Linville

Rev. Aiona is a good man--had him as a teacher LONG time ago.
K. Darrow Aiona

Vote OUT:
TOGUCHI (he is BOE Budget Chair, so current problems are from his tenure)

AHU-ISA (Promotes timeshares, and backed favorable legislation in the 90s--although she is more or less sincere, she has been ineffective as an education advocate, and goes with the status quo)

YEE (Served as Chair when BOE fired Jim Shon in secret and without cause--Son of long-time legislator Wadsworth Yee and nephew of Hiram Fong, so politics is in his blood--if elected, I hope he remembers that he slammed charter schools in 2006 along with the rest of the BOE--and I hope he doesn't make the same mistake again)

While I'm at it, I might give the rest of the BOE part of the Broadside:
If nothing changes on the BOE, in 2010 citizens should focus on voting out:
Karen Knudsen
(Nepotism--husband Greg worked long time at a nice little job in the Supt's office)

John Penebacker (Hater of Public Charter Schools--I wonder if he'll change his mind now that Barack Obama is a suporter of public charter schools?)

Mary Cochran (Curmudgeon at large)

Donna Ikeda (Current Chair--Heavily entrenched ol' skool Democrat--can't find $20,000 to random drug test 1300 teachers by mouth swab instead of the $500,000 for pee testing--which is a total SHIBAI number)

No one votes, then things stay the same.

These guys have nothing to fear.

It makes more sense to keep them as is.

Wouldn't reject either candidate out-of-hand, but I feel both have had their shot at public service, and should let new blood onto this dysfunctional body.

I'd support Randall if he learned his lesson from the Jim Shon charter school debacle. Folks like Penebacker and Harimoto still have not.

No way. They are former BOE members and were part of the problem. Don't need the same people doing the same thing.

I already voted for (BOE at large): Janis Akuna, Pauline Namuo, Marcia Linville by absentee ballot.

I liked what I read about all four new comers:
Janis Akuna
Robert Peters
Pauline Namuo
Marcia Linville

NEW BLOOD!

Not that it means anything, but I also notice no Japanese names in the above list (I can say that being part Nihonjin myself)

I also like Rev. Aiona.

And so is Mr. Berry of Dingle.

I mean really, if you want to support Mr. Yee and Mr. Tom, post something serious about the benefits of them as candidates.

Go to the meeting today at Honolulu Community College where the candidates will be speaking and/or answering questions. 9/14/08 11:30 - 1:00 in the cafeteria. When you have made your choices, spread the word to your family members, neighbors, co-workers and everyone you come in contact with!! How effective has the current board been? Which ones put their own children in public schools and worked with them? Which ones say they want to support public schools but only have private schools for their own children or grandchildren? Who believes in accountability and has demonstrated in their personal choices?
