I am having second thoughts about two things: sending my kid to University of north Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) and letting them live anywhere near the campus. What I have discovered has me quite concerned. There are thugs ON CAMPUS as well as off campus. There have been a LOT of murders in the area during the past year.

I came across this website and got REALLY scared:

http://thinkingofattendinguncc.blogspot.com/2...

These are all taken from news sources, so I am inclined to believe them.

Isn't the city concerned about the problem? I almost died when I read about that poor Yarmalenko girl. That was a few years ago, but there have been many many other murders right near the campus. Isn't anyone doing something about the problem. The robberies, stabbings and other things seem to happen daily.

Am I over reacting?

Overeacting? NO. 1. UNC is a diploma mill like dook and NC State. The "education" received is watcha pay for; not much. Send the kid up north (NOT Penn State though!) or out west; MUCH better education. 2. The crime is everywhere, not just Charlotte so, good luck on that.

Actually, the UNC Charlotte campus is an exceptionally safe place, where crime rates have been dropping for the last few years. And even before then, the rate of crime was low. The campus is like a small town of 25,000-28,000; it has incidents of crime but it also has a well trained and active police and public safety department that works very closely with CMPD in the areas around campus. The Yarmalenko murder happened more than 20 miles away from campus.

Leslie, please take that blog with a huge grain of salt. That person obviously is determined to spread negative information may not be aware that the Charlotte media often refer to the "university area" as shorthand for "University City," which is a designated section of the of the city. UNC Charlotte is part of University City, but that moniker also encompasses a much larger geographic region that stretches in a radius of more than 5 miles in some places. The University City area does include some low-income neighborhoods, but also includes middle-class housing, shops, etc. Charlotte is a large city and is not immune to the problems that cities sometimes experience; but the university campus and immediate surrounding area is very safe, for the most part.

I just read the blog. The guy missed several key problems at UNCC. There were RAPES in one of the girls' domitories during the past year. No, I wouldn't consider the campus an exceptionally safe place. Subscribe to StopCrime and look at all of the stuff that happens immediately outside the campus, and you'll know just how "safe" UNCC is.
Most automobile break-ins go unreported because the campus police cannot stop it.
There is a hardcore criminal element that lives just outside the campus. Anyone who denies it just doesn't know and doesn't live there. Cite statistics if you want, but the number of shootings and robberies in the area tell me that it isn't such a safe place.
And Yankee is Right. many of the programs at UNCC are truly bad. One more semester and I will be outta this place.

UNCC is a good school. Most schools in the UNC system are a great bang for your buck compared to most colleges.
At UNCC it all depends on the department you are in. Engineering is well respected. Belk college of business is good. I am about to graduate from the Department of Communication. I have enjoyed and respected all of my professors. Almost every professor I had was working in the field or had a long history working in the Public Relations field. I only remember one professor that was a career educator.
The safety about this area is exaggerated. It is a very large campus located pretty close to a bad area of town. It is in a city and crime happens.
I was a non-traditional student who commuted from another part of town. If you are that worried about it she can live in another part of town and commute to campus. I knew many people who did it.
The campus sends out alerts whenever crime happens. I would get a text and an email within 30 minutes to an hour after the police were called. They are doing what they can to stop crime, but their are 25,000 well to do college kids 3 miles away from the ghetto. put those two things together and crime is gonna happen.

Anyone who thinks that the UNCC area is safe is crazy. I read the blog in its entirety. It merely links to NEWS REPORTS of crimes in the UNCC University City area. I don't think anybody made up those reports. If UNCC was such a safe campus, the campus security wouldn't feel the need to send out crime alerts via cell phone.
The school is surrounded by areas of very high crime. Maybe the school says that it can keep the criminals out (it can't), but it can do nothing about the surrounding area. Maybe walking on the campus at night is safe. What if you DON'T want to stay on campus and want to go somewhere on foot at night? You can't.

I saw the same blog when I went to look for tuition information. In-state tuition is inexpensive, but I don't think I am willing to take risks to save money. Even the school news blog reported the violations in the UNCC girls' dormitory.

I went to UNC Charlotte many years and never witnessed any crimes. There are a lot of people who attend, so you'll hear about things. In grad school at UNC Chapel Hill, more stuff happens here than at UNC Charlotte...and at Emory, a school with less than 10,000 students, there were 7 rapes in one month! UNCC is a good school, and keeps getting better. Most of the alerts sent out are about kids walking around at 2am alone just like at UNC Chapel Hill here, yet I still see females jogging at midnight around campus, studying til 1 or 2 am and then walking 10-15 minutes across campus or outside of it. Things will happen regardless, but if the aforementioned things were cut out, there would be a lot less incidences.

I worked and lived in University City area for fifteen years until we moved last year. The apologists for Charlotte University City either work for the police, the mayor's office, the city council, or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, or the live under a rock and don't read the news.

UNCC University City is a cesspool of crime.

If the campus security is so hot, why were there two rapes in the girls' dorms and one in a classroom building last year? Google Charlotte University City Crime and see how bad it is.

My wife and I moved, but my son stayed. In the fall, we're pulling him out of that hell hole. Sure the engineering department is great, and the campus is spacious and beautiful, but the surrounding area is crime ridden. Classes in almost every undergraduate subject are overcrowded, and the tuition increases every year to pay for the expansion of the athletics department and the football stadium that won't even hold the entire student body.(Everyone pays a student activity fee, but not everyone can get in to watch a basketball game. I can imaginme what it'll be like during football season next year).

Sorry. A beautiful campus and new buildings does not a university make.

Harvard is the 2nd most dangerous school in the country (see link below). Would you not send you kid there? This girl must have something personal against UNCC. I went there and also lived in the area for seven years until about 2010. The campus is full if preppy college kids, not sure how people consider that dangerous. I live in uptown Charlotte now in a luxury highrise condo and I'm a VP at Bank of America. I still drive to university area all time to do shopping and feel perfectly safe.

I read an article that shows Duke is the 3rd most dangerous campus in the country (link below)! Not just in NC but the whole country. Why doesn't this girl compare other NC schools and not just beat up on UNCC. UNCC campus is safe. If you drive south on Tryon for a while it gets a little bad but the actual campus area is fine.

Yes there is crime on the campus of UNCC. There are many ways to prevent it. As a parent with a student there, I have many ideas as how to stop it. One is if your student is robbed...don't fight back, give up whatever they have. That can be replaced. Travel in groups. I met two sets of off duty housing and it scared me when all told me not to move in. It was a slum, though cheap. Not sure which ones have alarms with videos, but I suggest that you pay the cheap price of installing one if your student lives off campus. Also no guns, unless your student is 21, has a gun safe, and carries a permit for the weapon. Sometimes using one though, results in bad things. Ask your children, to unplug on campus and stop with the texting between campus. Changes are coming Parents for students. Remember the name halo. If you ask, I will give you my email addy. I just don't give it to anyone. Also it is legal to carry anything of three inches, such as screw drivers, locked three inch knives...I ordered one myself last night...a version of a swiss army knife but this one was abalone, with three less at three inches. So much can be done to prevent. Have your students take self defense courses, learn CPR and Basic Health repair....my new name for it. Let me know. UNCC will be getting safer, I guarantee it. Thank you.

You are right MRST.....the campus has the appearance of safety...but as we all know looks can be deceiving. Do some research on the deaths that have happened there, such as the star volleyball player and the student dropped off by her brother. Again, appearances are deceiving but I can assure you I am in the process of making it safer.

You are exactly right. I know from experience that crime is on campus. Anyone can come into campus. Does anyone do a real back ground report on all students? NO. Off housing, you cannot have a criminal record...how far does that go? We have had several deaths on campus and off campus that didn't need to happen at all. I have plans, that go unheard, but I am in the works of changing that. Have faith.

You hit the nail on the head. Congrats on Graduation early. Give me the link to Stop Crime, if you don't mind. Good luck in your field....and I know some awesome Professors as well. Campus has problems I am not at liberty to describe but with some support, which so far I have not gotten, that crime issue will not be a problem.

Hi Everyone. I want you know that there is no safe place. So, how do we fix this mess. I have ideas. One, Any Crime scene search units, be better trained, as well as medical examiners.Touch DNA is a valid, very valid use in Criminal Investigation. As far as students go, do back ground searches, which are available online.Again, your best weapon is a simple Brass Police Whistle, it can survive anything. You can't destroy it, mine is a three generation one, I carry it on my watch. Get lock down on your phones and laptops..at the very least get serial numbers. I am working on some changes that will make the campus at UNCC safer. I hope if called on, I will have your support. Much needs to be done.

Hi everyone...I am working on something to make the campus and off campus living safer. What I am about to do is tricky, but I hope you know I have your children, my child, and all others safety at heart. I can't stand by and let it go on. So say a prayer. I need a few to do what I am going to do.
