Sustar's Swimming pool

Someone on here or City Data asked about Sustar's Poll. Here is what I remember. It was located on the site of Presbyterian Hospital Matthewsa. It was very popular in the late 1950's through the 1960's. The Sustar family advertised it as one of the largest swimming pools in the US. It operated before intergration so there were no blacks allowed. They kicked people out that misbehaved or broke the rules. It was actually a pond and part of it had a sand bottom. It had filters that ran all the time. The water was usually crystal clear on most days but sometimes it looked cloudy or murky. In the summer there would be huge crowds on the weekend so they had to stop letting people in when it got to crowded. It had a sandy beach where good looking girls sunbathed and I met my ex wife in 1965. The Sustar family put in lights and for a while it was open at night but they had a lot of problems, mostly with employees (supposedly there was an orgy and 2 young girls got pregnant), so they closed at night. They had a lot of problems with break ins and the Matthews cops were always catching people climbing the fence and skinny dipping. When Mr Sustar died the family tried to keep it going but they had a hard time. They got sued by some blacks and lost so they had to open up to blacks. White people quit coming and the family decided to close it. They tore down the buildings and bulldozed part of it but the pond was still there when Presbyterian bought the property.
