Why dont they build a Walmart closer to us? It would make many jobs for our citizens and save us gas.The city should look into that. It would help our city to gain taxes from walmart and I hate to drive either to Beeville or Corpus when we need something that these stores dont carry. I bet it would help our budgets and what not.

Walmart tried along time ago but people like Chico Villarreal and Jimmy Flores fought against it and so did some other mom and pop stores. Now those stores ran out of business years ago, worst mistake they could have made. Now mathis and walmart have bad blood.

Is what happens when the town does not want to grow.It starts with Our leaders the City Council, what efforts have they made to bring businesses to Mathis! We have Two attractions that would interest Businesses, the First one is the Lake, the Second one is We are right off the Highway. Now to Me if We can't get businesses on those two things, then what good is it to have a City Council and a Mayor that is Happy to shop elsewhere. It's the Job of the City Council to be on City Manager to do these things, but what happens, they hire a Guy that doesn't live here but is more than Happy to take Our Money.Good rittens He's gone, OK now what. Now they have to start all over from scratch. We keep doing this a 100 more years and I think one day We'll get it right!!!!

That is not the reason they did not bring a wal-mart to our town. Fingers arnt snapped and a Wal Mart is built- we were a dry county 4 one thing and Wal Mart stepped back for several reasons as well

Don't we have an EDC Economic Development Corporation or Committee whatever it is. Isn't it up to the mayor and the EDC to go and attract businesses to Mathis? These last two years the EDC nor Mayor Villarreal did not do any of that but citizens must have liked it because you elected him for another two years...Go team!!!

It might help to recognize that your town is nearly dead already.....the question is, what are YOU willing to do about it? From what I see, not much more than bitch on some obscure website. Get BUSY. Get elected. Go to the city council meetings! Make noise. DO SOMETHING.

I have, Joe. But Money talks. I wish others would have listened. I'm just trying to warn you of what will happen. What are YOU willing to do about it but bitch here on this forum? Get a referendum together and call your state/district rep. as well as the governor. Your town will be nearly "dead" within two years if u let this happen.((P.S. don't judge me on my your assumptions)).

I have no intention of staying in Mathis. I'm renting here only until I buy a house and move my family, and there is NO WAY it would be in Mathis. I didn't grow up here, and I won't buy a house here, or raise my daughter here, and it doesn't matter if there's a Walmart here or not. It took one drive through town to know that. I'm talking to people who DO live here. It's THEIR town... why did they let it become what it is? Only THEY can know. Only THEY can fix it. It's NOT impossible.

PS: Racism sucks, and it's rampant in Mathis.

please the two economic drivers of the city I37 access and The Lake. The lake for one is dry, have you been out there lately. It's impossible for investors to put money into building at the lake because the level is never steady. One year it is full the next it is bone dry. the lake offers nothing because it is nothing. Just a watering hole for the surrounding cities. They could make condos and a marina and have outdoor venues there, but with the level fluctuating as it does people don't want to put money in. The only true promise is the I37 access, but all that brings is people stopping off the highway to eat and fuel up you can't base an entire cities economic worth on that. there are already 2 truck stops on the highway what are we just going to line the interatate with gas stations. people on the road are looking for 2 things food and gas. with the new smoliks being built and the two existing truck stops that is covered. other than that you really can't do much else in this economy. mathis poverty level is high that is people who are making under 20000/year which would probably equate to more than half. those are the types of things walmart looks at who has money and how are they going to spend it. mathis is a loss for walmart. they wouldn't make any money. look at heb i'm sure if it weren't for food stamps they wouldn't even be in business. and as for other businesses coming into town, if its not a business that can accept food stamps they probably aren't coming.
