With the Mathis ISD school board elections coming up, I hope people vote for the best person that is going to do our school good. One of them are nothing better than the dirt they walk on. He needs not be re-elected. He could care less about his family why would you think he cares about our kids? And why would he want the best for our children when he has no problem kicking his wife and 5 children out on the street and them bad mouth her to every one that will listen? I hope we have better people running for the school board election because I will not vote for someone as low as this man.

Trust me the Mathis school board in General needs a good flush. The problems are systemic there from the top. Mrs. Whalen was moved from the Jr. High after SEVERAL years teaching because a student made some story up. The school is running all the good teachers out of there. Current administration has no backbone to stand up and say "the emperor has no clothes"

I have to reply to this post.

"A student made some story up"? Actually, after a comment was made to a student and people complained the students were asked to write down what they thought about Mrs. Whalen.
I know for a fact that she is a good teacher my kid was in her class. But he mentioned a few times throughout the year that he got uncomfortable sometimes with her comments and thought she was somewhat prejudice.
Although she is a good teacher when more than one kid says she makes comments about race etc something is up.
So it wasnt just one kid making up a story.
Her students had a say in this and I think it was a wonderful idea. Sad that such a good tacher would make comments that were taken as being racist or prejudgice.
PEOPLE! GET OUT AND GET INVOLVED in your kids education.
GET OUT AND VOTE! You do have a say in our next school board election. If you dont vote then you dont have a right to gripe about the school board I wish nothing but the best to Mrs. Whalen. Perhaps this is a little learnign lesson for us all to

This is pathetic. I see too much conjecture in the previous postings. I don't recall this individual driving around town in a "new" truck. He is no different than anyone else in the area; he has a vehile, which isn't new at all, that he uses to get from point A, to point B. As far as him sending money for his kids; well, I don't think anyone posting here is in the room holding the flashlight. In other words, you probably shouldn't guess what is going on when you aren't intimately involved in the situation, and if you are, then your comments are obviously biased, and do not paint a true picture of the situation. You people throw so many stones without facts, but it's funny how no one is ever around to listen the school board when they have meetings. You should be disgusted with the lack of participation in this community instead of railing against one man's personal problems. I always think it's funny how the people in this area try to politicize morality, and moralize politics.

Uncomfortable...please a 65 year old science teacher who doesn't take nonsense from students....OF COURSE STUDENTS are going to feel uncomfortable. Hell she made me feel uncomfortable. What would you say about a hard nosed science teacher if asked? One who actually TEACHES the kids instead of just passing them along for the High School to deal with? We see where that has gotten us right? She's a great teacher she CHOOSE to work at Mathis a school with over 80% Minorities. Texas is dying for Math and Science teachers why would she stay?
The facts hurt 60% of Mathis Students won't pass the TAKS. Mathis was on the AYP list due to drop outs....is that racist? Nope just facts. Hell if you want to know the white attitude teacher get in that town just read some of the comments from the younger kids on some of the other topix. It's kinda odd how in a town where less then 15% of the student population go to College that there SURE is a lot of Longhorn fans in this town. Hmmmm wonder why that is?
The school there is FAILED...how does a student pass Middle School TAKS Science and Math but come to Jr. High not knowing how to multiply? Seem odd? I've heard how they pass....it's a disgrace. It would be a great investigative piece for a freelance writer...poor Sully would get banned from the school if he wrote it. I feel sorry for parents who have their kids in that school. Maybe the best thing that could happen is TEA to take over the school...maybe the changes that need to be made will finally happen.

The facts are the facts; I agree. However, you stated, "...poor Sully would get banned from the school if he wrote it." What is poor is the fact that Sully never takes the time to actually investigate what is going on just two doors away from his own office. Poor Sully never goes to school board meetings, poor Sully never asks the tough questions, and poor Sully simply isn't a good investigative reporter.

In addition, the real white elephant in the room, as it relates to much of the problems at the schools, is the parents of the Mathis area. The parents in the area simply aren't good parents. Buying your child a cell phone doesn't make you a good parent; making sure your child does well academically makes you a good parent. Setting ground rules that makes your child behave, and be respectful of themselves, and to others, makes a good parent. If the parents would take more time to set a better example for their children, there would definitely be fewer problems at our schools. As it stands now, educators have to spend endless amounts of time dealing with students with extremely bad attitudes, and behavior, and it's eating away at time that should be spent educating.

Anyone ever notice that when you point one finger at someone else, there are three pointing in your own direction? Don't you think it's prudent to see what three things you could have done yourself to solve the problem, or what three things you didn't do that caused the problem, before you cast stones?

In short, you people need to spend more time learning the facts from the correct sources. Please stop being ignorant; it's too costly.

While it's great to want the facts...you have to be ironically a realist. If Sully got shut out from the school what would the paper consist of? Have you read it lately. 90% of it is stuff dealing with the school. So unless there is a meeting in town, an accident or something else in the area....with out school news there's not much to the paper.

when a teacher makes racist comments EVERYONE should feel uncomfortable. People should feel uncomfortable when anyone makes racial slurs.
and btw way I did say she was a good teacher
I am more invovled than you people think but I dont go up there whining like most parents when their kids get in trouble or when things dont go their way.

Realist... I totally believe in what you said
Any community NEEDS AND HAS TO HAVE parental involvement. I wonder how many check the website that lists their kids grades, how many even know their childs teachers.
I would fail as a parent if I wasnt involved. I have even had other parents say you are too involved. Why cuz I go up there when they have special thigns for the parents and cheer all teams on when I can? Excuse me!! I want my child to have manners and respect and I want him to graduate and get a college education. It is a shame that the statistics for this school are that embarassing so hopefully with the new and upcoming classes these kids will show those that bash them that ANYTHING is possible if one wants it!

And this is to Mathis Insider you are right too. That is really the only reason why i pay that 75 cents, to see what is going on within the schools!

Mathis Insider, you just proved my point about the paper. My point is that the only reason that people buy the paper is because of the school news. That is why, I believe, Sully doesn't do his due diligence to bring issues at the school to light; he seems to be afraid of losing sales by angering readers. On the other hand, I think it would actually increase sales, so I can't understand why he doesn't publish more. I also do not believe the school would ban Sully from the district because they need his support to get the information out about the things that are going great at the school; not to mention that banning a reporter seeking public information is most certainly illegal. Believe it or not, there are many great things about our school, but we are no different than any other organization; there are problems that still need addressing.

Personally, I would encourage Sully, no challenge him, to print more diverse articles in our local paper. It seems he doesn't believe his readers can understand more interesting articles, and I know there are intelligent people in Mathis that crave more intellectual material; this blog proves it.

This is for Realist your quote "I know there are intelligent people in Mathis that crave more intellectual material; this blog proves it"

was right on the money. Excellent point

I love reading about the great kids we have here that are going to school and staying out of trouble but I would love to have more news just as you stated! I admit it, if I didnt have a kid in school I probably wouldnt buy the paper.
Wonder if they are hiring lol

I'm a little disappointed that people are discussing small issues at the local level when there are much larger issues at the county level. Does anyone know when our commissioner will actually do anything for our precinct? I have a hard time understanding why the constituents in the area elevated her to an actual elected commissioner when she never, prior to election, raised one single motion at the commissioners' court. I would encourage those in the community who actually care at times other than the election to go on the countyís website and read the past minutes from the court meetings. Does anyone know if this lady even has a basic plan to improve the economic, or social, conditions in the precinct? That is the job of a commissioner. Perhaps this is better placed in another post, but I really donít understand why the voters elevated her when she was the individual at the helm of the school board when the schoolís performance took a state recognized nose dive. I just wonder if anyone ever put those two factors together.

Is that the most intelligent comment you could write? Would you care to expand on your vast insight? Do you know what else is out of control lately? Cats are out of control. So many cats roam the streets at all hours of the day and night. Birds are everywhere lately; it's terrible! Don't get too comfortable just yet, because in about a month, lawn grass will also probably be out of control all over our community. I will give you a chance to qualify your comment though; when was the last school board meeting you attended?

Satirical, boy you sure do have a "better than though" attitude!! Get off your moral high horse! It seems to me that you too have a personal agenda, just like everyone else around here. And I just bet that you've never attended a school board meeting. And how on earth did you so totally get off the subject?! Talking about stray cats, and lawn grass! So, you tell me, when was the last school board meeting you attended? My bet is, you never have.
