Bill, following is an interview I did on BayshoreTalk Group with gentleman named Larry who grow up in Keyport in the 40s / 50s. Hope this brings back some memories for you:
OK, here's my recollection of Keyport back in the late 40's and 50's:
On West Front Street
* Of course, the Strand Movie. Outside, they had black and white
pictures of scenes from the movie. I think next to the movie and
upstairs was Dr. McCue's office.(his fillings cost $5.00 which I still
have and remind my current dentist when he charges around $100 for a
filling). Moving to the right was Pep Boys, Rosenthal's Jewelry Store
(I got my wife's engagement ring there), Goosley's Jewelry (his
daughte Florence, was a Rockette in Radio City), Bay Drug, a bank,
Newberry's 5 $ 10 cent store. There clothing store, Feigenson's shoe
store (I think a beautiful man named Hy Schwartz was the owner),
a barber shop, downstairs, where I used to get my hair cut when I had
hair. Then there was Costa's Soda Shop where we used to hang out in
front of, and get chased 3 or 4 times a night.
* Moving down Broad St. toward the Bay, I can only a cleaners, and the
the good old Bucket of Blood Tavern. On the corner of Broad and W.
Front was Colfax TV. I remember Stash Malowski either owned it or
worked there. I remember him because he was a catcher and so was I.
* Going up to W Front Street toward Church was Huyler' Bike Shop, which
is the subject of the picture on the publication "Images of America,
Keyport. There was West Furniture, and Keyport Lumber. Across from
West's was Hopkin's Pharmacy. Next to him lived Mr. Costa, who had two
children attend KHS, John and I can't remember the daughter's name.
Behind their home was the Keyport Yacht Club. Across from that was the
store front of Bennet's Plumbing store.
* Across the street from the Strand on the corner of West Front and
Main Street, was a record store that sold the old 78s. To the left of
that store was someting (think appliances), and then the Boro Cab (for
which I worked for a while).
* Moving across Main St. toward Broad St., I can only remember Hansen's
Bakery, the Army/Navy store, the old A & P, and I think a cleaners.
Next to Hansens was a driveway to the public parking lot. I think it
is still there.
Well that is all I can remember for now, my brain is smoking!

You have got it right down to a tee. Wasn't Alpines on the corner across from Keyport bank? Appliance store was something that began with a C. At least my wife Judi Sproul Flynn thinks so. We lived in Lockport. Gary Roberts had a grocery and butcher store by the old railroad tracks and there was Emily's store across the street. Cold soda in the box filled with ice. Buddys old appliance store down from Emilys. I lived on Pine Street and Judi lived on Walnut Terrace

Hello Bill. I'm sad to say, but Larry Danza, the gentleman who provided this info to me, passed away a few years ago. I've send an email to another Topix member, who is somewhat of a historian of Keyport, to see if perhaps he can join in our conversation and answer some of your questions. In the meantime, if you read the Union Beach topix, you will be able to read many conversations provided by Larry. Larry lived in Keyport from the late 1930s to early 90s You may also want to join the Bayshoretalk. I can send you a link if interested.

Ray, been out of town for a while. just read your comments. I surely would appreciate Bayshoretalk link. As the old saying goes, you can take a guy out of keyport, but can't take keyport out of a guy.
For Bill Flynn, appliance store across from the bank was Atlantic Appliance, and Alpines was further down, near Osborn street, a few doors west of SavOn drug store. Bill

Hi Bill. Here's the link to the bayshoretalk group:
You will have to join the group as a member before you get access to the posts / pictures etc., but myself and a friend named toodles are the moderators and we'll approve your membership as soon as you submit the application, if interested. Only members have access so it's a save sight to talk about Union Beach, Keyport, Hazlet and Keansburg. Membership has drastically dropped off - most people now use facebook. However, if you join bayshoretalk there are some need photographs, past conversations and pictures of the old airplane factory in Keyport. You can quit membership at any time. Of course this is a yahoo site and membership is absolutely free without obligation, except to follow the decency / rules of a Yahoo site. Take care Ray
