Pit bull quarantined after attack; will be euthanized

HUBERT — A dog is being held in quarantine after attacking a Hubert man and his dog.

Daniel Harrington was walking his border collie, Valerie, on Friday when a pit bull that had apparently broken free from its chain, attacked the two.

“(Valerie and I) were walking our normal route when this dog came barreling toward us,” Harrington said.“It knocked me down and tried to take a bite out of my hand, but it couldn’t get a good grip. Valerie was between the pit and me. It got a good hold on Valerie’s right thigh.”

The border collie needed medical attention from a veterinarian; and Harrington, who has cancer, worries the experience may derail her training as a service dog.

“She was very shaken up. She actually backs away from me when I try to reach down and pet her,” he said.

Alan Davis, director of Animal Control for Onslow County, said the agency is currently quarantining the dog. In Onslow County, if a dog bites someone, it must be quarantined for 10 days, Davis said. If the owner can produce proof the animal has its rabies shots, it can be quarantined at home.

Each dog bite case is handled individually. Owners whose dogs get labeled “potentially dangerous” or “dangerous” have to follow specific guidelines. Davis said he believes the owner of this particular dog is going to sign the dog over for euthanasia.

“This is what happens with people,” Davis said.“They get dogs that are strong, and if they don’t spay and neuter them, and take them to animal behavior training, there is no way they are going to be able to control them.”

Pit bulls were responsible for 263 dog bites from 2007-2011 in Onslow County, second only to Labrador retrievers. There were 48 pit bull bites labeled moderate to severe; labs were responsible for 27.

See, just shows PitBulls do more damage. Labs bit more, but PitBulls did FAR MORE damage.

That is the point of the whole issue.

What would you rather Get shot by? a .22 (Lab) or a .45 Magnum (PitBull)?

GERMANTOWN MD - 2-PIT-BULLS RUN LOOSE AND ATTACKED A 10-YEAR-OLD BOY AND HIS PUPPY WHILE THEY WERE TAKING A WALK IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD

A 10-year-old boy was walking his 8-week old puppy on Saturday afternoon when 2 PIT BULLS escaped their leashes in Germantown.

The boy's mother, Daisy Cardenas, says her son Max started running for his house but could not make it.

"THE PIT BULLS BEGAN ATTACKING MY SON AND THE PUPPY RIGHT THERE IN THE STREET."

She and 2 neighbors quickly tried to get the dogs away. One used a broom and the other sprayed water from a hose.

**********

THE PUPPY NAMED "DRAKE" HAS BROKEN LEGS AND A BROKEN JAW.

**********

"I WANT THIS TO BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE PIT BULLS TO PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE. IF YOU CAN'T HOLD THEM TIGHT, PLEASE DON'T BE OUTSIDE WITH THEM. THEY'RE VERY DANGEROUS."

Montgomery County police took the 2 pit bulls away. Cardenas said she plans to file a civil lawsuit against the owner of the dogs

Pitt bull attacks horse

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- All dogs can be disobedient at times but not that many decide to take on a full-grown horse. A pitt bull got loose from its owners and left a family’s horses covered in lacerations and tears.
“Around two o’clock on Saturday we got a call from the owner of the horses actually saying that something had happened- there had been a dog that attacked," said Lisa Grove, Humane Society of Saint Joseph County.

Salty the horse is slowly recovering with the help of veterinarian visits. She has a huge gash on the right side of her face and bites along her front right leg, front left leg and rear right leg.
The pitt bull is doing doggy time in quarantine at the Humane Society in Mishawaka because it's rabies shots were past due. State law requires the Humane Society to keep the dog for ten days—but its free to go home to its owner after the quarantine period.
“As far as the severity of the injuries and things like that our director has to look over that to determine," said Grove. "But if they do live in the city they do have to obtain a dangerous dog license before it can go home for a pitt bull.”

The owner of the pitt bull was not reached at the time of the story.

Dog attacks postal worker in Bethlehem, charges pending, police report
Published: Thursday, October 11, 2012, 3:37 PM Updated: Thursday, October 11, 2012, 3:38 PM
By Sarah M. Wojcik | The Express-Times

A 70-pound pit bull escaped a yard this afternoon in Bethlehem and attacked a female postal worker, causing serious bite injuries, according to police.

Authorities say the attack happened in the 1500 block of Elayne Street and charges are pending. Police declined to identify the victim or the dog owner until charges are officially filed.

The dog apparently escaped from its yard and ran at the mail carrier, who attempted to ward the animal away with a mace-like dog spray, police say. The woman was taken to the ground by the dog and bit on both arms, the face, chest and one area of her thigh.

It was not immediately clear what stopped the dog from attacking. The postal worker suffered significant injury, according to Bethlehem police Lt. Mark DiLuzio. She is being treated at St. Luke's University Hospital in Fountain Hill.

The dog was captured by police without incident. DiLuzio said the animal was not aggressive toward police. He said the dog was placed in quarantine at the owner's home while the investigation continues.
