" Is Alcoa committed to its future in Massena? " Doesn't seem like it now ,just into it for the waiver on their electric , Would have been nice to have offered that discount to the people who got hit with big bills this past year . Now they'll use it for more buy outs probably until they have a plant built in another part of the world with cheaper workers , Maybe not they do have loyalty here in Massena , and maybe we'll get back up to the 900 jobs guaranteed a while back ,

IMO: No need to build in Massena when another huge aluminum project will probably be built overseas. There goes Massena's new billion dollar smelter overseas.

I work at Alcoa West plant for 9 years. What do you mean when you say do their job?We all work in a hot plant ad produce the product for Alcoa. You know nothing about Alcoa. What really happened was management and the old Reynolds plant (East)was not worth saving for Alcoa. Plant managers and management in general has made Massena Alcoa what it is today. We can only hope Alcoa Corporate goes through with the modernization. I believe they will unless management ruins it.

No way are they going to build another smelter here in Massena. Massena West is one of the highest cost smelters in the US.

I wish you all luck, but I would get rid of my toys and anything else you can't afford after they move the plant to Mexico. White collars will be tanning in the sun at new Texas office.

Best running? Ok I will give you that but here is what you need to add to that statement:

IMHO: Alcoa's Massena West potline is one of the best RUNNING potlines in the world but is near or at the top of the highest overall COST locations in the US.

Added to the whole mix is that there are alot of people in charge of depts now that have not one clue on how to run that dept. Never even saw that dept before in their career until they were given that position. Recipe for disaster = high costs.

I do think Alcoa is committed to Massena and will invest here just the plans may change a bit IMO. If you listen to what the Klaus Kleinfeld has said recently you'll see that the company is shifting away from being a commodity business so likely an expansion of the "value added" portion of the business will occur I.e., casthouse, fabrication etc.

If it was one of the highest cost it would have already been closed. Cost is a total figure including electric. The low cost power makes them one of the lowest cost in the US and competitive in modern world countries. If the labor contract they sign is effective, all will be OK. They will however push the state for even lower costs and possible cut the guarentted job total some more. They hold all the cards with the state in trying to get them to stay.
