So I called Time Warner, asked them about avoiding the modem rental fee by buying my own. I told them I would buy the same exact modem that they gave me but guess what....that modem is not on the approved list. The modem I got from them that I will paying a rental fee for next month IS NOT APPROVED. All of the approved modems are Motorola (deal struck maybe?), and more expensive.

SO anyway I'm looking for a good ISP alternative to TWC, but I want decent speed, like 10 Mbps. I have only found Verizon and Hughes Net so far.

They have us by the short hairs. The only other real opportunity is to have 2 or 3 dishes on your roof.

Since you specified Massena, you only have two choices, TWC or Verizon DSL. Hughes or Wild Blue are not realistic, unless you live in an extremely rural area and only as a last resort. The speed is roughly just a bit better than Dialup, and the bandwidth limits will drive you nuts, as you have to be very conservative in your usage habits. The DSL service here is outdated and extremely SLOW, you'd be depressed after being spoiled by Cable.

You CAN avoid the rental fee (which is a rate increase in disguise, aimed at adding $300,000,000 in revenue a year for Time Warner) by buying an APPROVED modem. If you have standard Internet service, you can get a Motorola SB5101 on Ebay for $22.-$25. including shipping. You'll have it paid for in saved rental fee in less than 6 months.

Nothing up here. TWC has you locked in. Hughes is fast on the download. Slow on the upload and EXTREMELY limited. Watch a few movies on Netflix and go over your cap. This leasing fee is not that high and TWC replaces your modem at NO COST if something happens.

I know, but for what I'd pay in one year I could have a new router.....every year.

If you put in your address and see what's available for your area, Earthlink will tell you there's ONLY the 15 Mbps downstream (1 Mbps up)option, which is IDENTICAL to TW Roadrunner Standard. Since your signal is going to get to your house through TW's equipment, there will be no change for you.

Verizon does however your tied to a 2-5-10G plan. And if you do any sort if streaming you will suck that down in days, then let the overage charges begin.

EarthLink is owned by Time Warner Cable so I am sure the modem lease fee is not far behind.

Right! It's already happened in some parts of the country, where EarthLink customers in TWC-provided areas ARE getting the modem lease fee also. As I said, you can buy your own Docsis 2.0 modem (Motorola SB5101) cheaply enough on the Internet for $22.-$25. If you want a brand new one, it's still only around $60.(Unless you're on the "Extreme" plan, and absolutely require a Docsis 3.0 modem, which the prices have skyrocketed for in the last week, to $150.-$200.

I think it's less about some kind of "deal" with Motorola, than it is about TW trying to make it as difficult as possible to own your own modem. Remember, this was all a plan to generate 300 MILLION dollars a year in "extra" revenue for TW. I have a friend in Queens who had to spend 5 days trying to get his own modem provisioned by TW, then spend THREE hours in line at the cable office trying to return his company modem. Then, TW still charged him for the leasing fee on his next billing cycle, which began AFTER he'd returned the modem. This resulted in more calls to TW to get the charges reversed. TW is betting on most people NOT wanting to go through these hassles, and just forking over the 4 bucks. You can bet that TW will also blame all of your connection problems on YOUR modem instead of investigating other issues with THEIR infrastructure.

(To be fair to Motorola, their modems are the highest quality in the industry, real workhorses, and last a long time for trouble-free service. Consequently, they are the most expensive, which is why Cable providers aren't using them as much as they used to.)

Historically, municipal cable companies have a very high failure rate, needing extremely high volume of subscribers to make economic sense. The price of bandwidth, connectivity and program content are substantially higher for an operator with a relatively small subscriber base. The cost of providing municipal electricity is relatively TINY compared to the cost of TV and Internet service.

However, it is not to say that Municipal Cable CAN'T be done in a small community. Here's a community roughly the size of Massena, take a look at Spencer, Iowa's Muni Utility company. Water, Electric, Cable, Telephone, the whole works!

Take note of the Internet rates at the above, too. And without caps like I've found at other Municipal companies.

You can thank the Republicans and Conservatives for companies like Time-Warner screwing you over.
Capitalism just looks at profits and bottom dollar, not interested in morality or fair practice. It's dog eat dog.

You should see what Halliburton and Kellog-Brown-Root did to our own troops and even their own employees over in Iraq, just to make a buck.
