When they abandon the young ones and keep the older ones, they are just going to let things fizzle out. No investment in growth.

I feel bad for those young people, many parents of young kids I would image, having to go through this.

John messing is the smartest of them all. Already had his camp in Waddington up for sale well before the announcement. Good man, John! Heading to Barber College from what I hear through the grapevine.

So much for the 900 jobs , here for decades ,right ?, They got the cheap power ,used it to make a bunch of money and out the door they go. They ought to insist Alcoa live up to there end of the deal , But as it looks most are out only for themselves ,Buy out the long termers and hell with the short time people .

Did you people even read the article? They are not abandoning anybody! No involuntary layoffs at this time. They are offering retirement incentives and incentives to quit or relocate but everyone will have the opportunity for employment. It could have been so much worse.

The deal is better for the workers than some alternatives may have been. But, for Massena and the North Country? Barring a huge change in aluminum prices globally, these jobs are not coming back. This "deal" means another 150 o so younger union workers and their families are headed out of the community. Just under 100 union workers will retire early, most staying around but, with less income than currently. The more than 100 managers/non-union folks will be transferred. This amounts to a huge loss for Massena now and it does not look good for Alcoa long-term.

The main issue for Massena and its residents to wrestle with is whether the community will finally wake up and choose a different path. Alcoa(Reynolds) has been bleeding jobs for decades and paying new wokers less than those with seniority. GM is long gone. I don't want in any way to sound like the lame individuals that spew negativity on this site, but, like alot of people who grew up in Massena I moved away long ago because the town did not know how to build on its strengths and the town was, has been and continues to slide downhill.

The North Country is a beautiful place. Massena has two rivers flowing through the village - but, they are almost completely un-utilized for recreation or tourism. Massena has let go of some great older buildings that are irreplaceable resources for economic development (e.g. First Baptist Church building) that have been replaced with fake colonial buildings or in most cases .....nothing.

Massena is actually not that different from a lot of cities and towns in upstate NY, she ain't what she used to be. But, the Town could have a brighter post-industrial future if it starts building on its natural resources, community character and the integrity of its good people to attract smaller scale, but more reliable investment in the town.

I wish all of the workers and their families the very best.

So true. Some people have babies like others collect commemorative plates.. I've seen mother hens standing around clucking about baby-related products like they were a hobby- reminded me of men talking about cars and their parts. Having a child these days is a very selfish endeavor.

... Different company ,different words, But all in all not too far from GM and look where their at now. It seems Alcoa used the cheap power to make enough to buy out whom they can , If there are guaranteed jobs at the other plants the young folk should go if they can ,but make sure of the guarantee, All in all save the money you can as this still looks like Alcoa's is just starting to say it's good byes...
