If you take into consideration that the cleanup of that site may exceed more than 400 million dollars it would seem they would build a new plant for 800 million just to avoid the cleanup. That power from nypa that has been allocated to alcoa is priceless when smelting aluminum. There are rumors around town suggesting they put a couple new lines at the west plant but those rumors make no sense when considering the cleanup costs of the east plant. For all those contradictins to the relevance of GM not having to pay for cleanup it is important to remember that alcoa has not filed for bankruptcy.

How about the work force? can they recover from a shut down only to be asked to work now? A few lbs have been put on if you know what I mean. The place will probably smell like McD's with all that lard/bacon ozing out of their pores.

It's not the peoples fault they curtailed the potrms and have nothing to do...it's easy to put on weight when you don't do anything. I think we all do in the winter...Alcoa is applying for air permits to reopen now...rumor has it, this Fall. The union contract is up this June 1, so I'm sure Alcoa will blackmail the union into something to reopen. They'll have to sell their souls, it's about all they have left.

WHAT!!!!??? It's not their fault? Nobody is forcing these people to sit on their asses and shovel potatoe chips and dingdongs into their donut holes. Maybe if they were a bit more ambitious and took some initiative to keep their ever growing asses under control, they wouldn't be the poster children for cardiac arrest. As far as the contract is concerned, it isn't blackmail if the company and the union agree on terms. It's called negotiations. The way I see it, they may have to give up alittle (just like the rest of the work force in the U.S.) to keep their jobs. If they don't, they may find themselves unemployed and ALCOA gone from the north country. That would be a huge negative impact on NY and our local economy. Sounds like "Not Surprised" is either an empolyee there or knows one.

I wouldn't want to work at that dump you loser. I'm sure you have the same mentality as the rest of the work force!!! over pay me and I'll do nothing, lay around and nap, then get up and play some cards and finally eat a doughnut or two. Then say "Alcoa owes me a job and pay check". WRONG scum bag!!!!

Wait a minute... not too sure about the closing or shutting down or permits or how much it'll cost to do this or to do that....BUT...Let me tell you guys a few things that think they all do nothing but sit, eat, and sleep...
My brother has worked there for probably let's say the last 4 yrs. and within the last 2 was transferred into the potrooms per his request because he heard how laid back, dont do nothing yada yada yada..Tell me one person out there honestly who wouldnt love to make 20 someodd dollars an hour and be able to sit and rest your eyes from time to time, thats what i thought... So what im trying to get to is he thought it was going to be sooooo great dont get me wrong he loves his job and is good at it, but he works 12 hour shifts sometimes overtime in a building thats 1,000 some degrees {the heat alone will make you fatigue} and is always changing shifts every wk}shift work}..Then he goes home and has 2 young kids who do go to school, his wife is anurse and works nights.. then he'll get done work and go home and remodel rooms in there new home.. my brother is far from lazy or fat{might have a little beer belly} but he works hard and deserves a beer from time to time...Lets go see one of you guys do this young or old...

You make it sound like you brother is some kind of hero. He isn't. Many people live the same kind of life as him. I work in the potrooms. Been here for many years. Hands down the easiest job I've ever had because I have done more dangerous and harder work for much less. I work shift work and 12 hr shifts too. I have young children, my wife works, and I stay very active outside of work also. I get more sleep at work (after my work is done) than I do at home. Most people in the work force would get fired for sleeping on the job. I would have to say ALCOA is a great place to work.

Not all of us that have been laid off are "Shoveling potatoe chips and dingdongs" into our mouths. Many of us have gone back to work at old jobs or found new ones. We all put on a few pounds with a change in pace and environment. I am sure you are not as slim as you once were.

We have given up things in our contracts of the past. We must also look out for our retirees and make sure that they are taken care of. Yes, it is a game of give and take, but we do not have to be forced fed a poor contract.

If you think everyone who works at ALOCA has such a cushy job and is overpaid, maybe you should try and do some of the work. Summers coming up, try Carbon Change.

I am sure absolutely nobody will take you up on this. If you think it's easy but you don't care to work there, jump in a sauna until you are dripping with sweat, then crank the heat, then pour some sand down your pants. But hey, if you pass out from heat stroke, you get a gator aid. Sounds awesome doesn't it! All this for about $15 per hour. Walmart workers stand in air conditioning and make $12. Yeah your right alcoa is cushy! NOT

Yes,I see jealousy will always be around. When you sit in your aluminum lawn chairs at your aluminum lawn table drinking a beer from your aluminum cup and draw your welfare check, oh heck I forgot, welfare people dont have these things because they chose not to work for a living. They generally sit back and smoke pot, something they can buy with money they got from selling some stolen property that some one else worked hard for at one of the industries that put Massena on the map and helped put a lot of money into Massena so most of the people could have a real life and have nice things.I worked there for thirty eight years. My dad worked there for thirty nine years. Never once was our family on public assistance. We did how ever contribute to the people that were. In our seventy seven years of service dating back to nineteen twenty six and before any safety rules were ever implemented or thought of we wittnessed a gentleman getting cut in half on a over head crane rail, a scafold falling and killing several painters,a man crushed between two blocks of carbon, a man crushed under a stacker crane, a two different men burning their legs bad in a pot of molten metal, a man killed in an explosion when molten metal ran into a pool of water, two gentlemen each loosing an eye. This my friends is not a laughing matter. This is only a good example of what a loving and caring father would do to put food on the table, clothes on his family and a roof over their head and then only to to raise a generation with no heart and gutless and too lazy to work and do for their families. Then they skin their wind putting down the people that struggled to bring them into the world and give them a decent life which they only trashed any way. Thank ,
