Well now, look up and read about delusional parasitosis and you'll find there IS a treatment for this.

I also had a mite infestation, but at first thought they were fleas. Then the bites were huge, red, hot and SO itchy. I looked online and called an exterminator, who was to come out and spray. There were wild birds and squirrels in the walls which caused this. I also have 6 cockatiels and was worried about them. Well, out of the blue I got very sick, shortness of breath, fever, and ended up in Intensive Care. I was hospitalized for 9 days for "Pneumonia" which I am not proned to at all. Once I came home, I took a flashlight and looked at my sheets etc at night. I nearly fainted. There were thousands on my sheets, pillow case, comforter etc, walking around. I then realized I was inhaling these HORRID THINGS and it made me sick just thinking about it. Im sure they got into my nose, ears, and lungs which is called HISTOPLASMOSIS..Finally had the place sprayed, boarded my birds, and I stayed in a Hotel for two days. Everything has been wonderful since BUT now one of my Cockatiels has them and I dont understand as the Vet said they were all clean while boarded out. But they hide, they are tiny. Now we have to start all over again. This type of infestation is a nightmare, even if you get exterminated..I want to move, but that is not an option. So seems we have to spray AGAIN and I fear my bird will die..This is horrible..

This response is 100% offensive and also ignorant.

To the rest of you - no one is likely to have delusional paratosis, everyone has something which unfortunately is very hard to identify at this moment.

I read through this thread with great interest and was dazzled by the tremendous variety of responses. From it all, however, I would like to address two:

Sean (son of the woman): Where were you all this time the mites were infesting your mother and her home? Shouldn't you have acted earlier, when she first began to notice and possibly complain about this? Shame on you, man.

Bird Mite Help: Can appreciate your intent and willingness to help, but you went on so much that I decided you might be a salesperson for Kleen Green cleanser or Sebo Felix vacuum cleaners. Can you take a little joke?

Hoping anyone drawn here by a struggle to identify and/or treat a tricky infestation also finds the "bird mites or scabies" thread.

Your an idiot! You need to do some studying your self! I just had mites on myself and they give you cream for it and your also a liar because this women isn't your mother because it states in the log that the hospital is giving her cream while she is there. The cream is good, you put it on for 8 to 14 hours then wash off and repeat after a week! So before you go running your stupid mouth and trying to get people all pissy you might want to d your homework, idiot!
PLEASE TELL US THE NAME OF THE CREAM? SO WE CAN GO BUY IT, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

Your a moron...this person is my mother and I will tell you that she had no damn choice to live with them! How would you like these things feasting on you?! The landlord should have given her what she asked for it is a required thing to have an exterminator if something is amiss and especially when it is of this importance. If you read other cases of this you will see that people live with this for years until they die on their own because doctors do not know how to treat it. Your an ignorant person. Grow up maybe read a book!I feel really bad for your mom, I am going throuh my second infestation now. People have no idea what it is like. You can't see these creatures so it takes alot of research to deduce the problem. And once you find out, the proess of getting rid of them is exhausting.I feel alot sympathy for your mom. Has she gotten rid of the problem completely yet. There is a very helpful website called birdmites.org that has many strategies to helpfight bird mites. Good Luck! My heart goes out to you and your mom.
That's another problem we have in this country. Doctors don't know about alot of things. All the huge amounts of money they are paid, and they still don't know alot of things.

We don't only have a health care problem. We have a problem with the doctors, and correct health information. I went to four doctors about debilitating psoriasis on my hands and feet. They milked me for two years without mercy.

I finally realized they either could not or would not help me, what are you going to do about THAT situation Mitt Romney and President Obama?

I finally humbled myself before God, got down on my knees before Him and asked for his help. I got totally healed the following Easter.

If you ferel you have mites in hair try shampooing with medicated dandruss shampoo like Selsun Blue , spray head with Listerine as part of the rinsing, let it sit for a couple of minutes and rinse out. Cover pillows with an anti-allergenic cover and change cases frequently. I'd get rid of any down-filled pillows or duet, too,.

When I first heard a portion of the story, I thought this woman HAD to be an elderly, possibly even invalid, woman. Someone interviewed at the house said she had them coming out of her nose, ears, and other parts of her body. How could this woman become so infested with these mites & not know it until it got to this point?!?!?!
These parasites are nearly invisible to the naked eye. Physicians usually mistreat for scabies which does not kill the mites. TThey multiple at an extremely rapid rate. Before you've even figured out what they are, they've invaded your entire home, car, posessions, and body. Hygeine has NOTHING to do with it! You can shower 10x a day with little effect as soon as you put on your clothes or lay on your bed theyre right back on you.

Bird Mites are extremely adaptable and resiliant. They can quickly build a tolerance & become immune to insectisides. You can clean, wash clothes and endlessly vaccuum to no avail as it is nearly impossible to kill every last one as they are so small and there are so many. They can live for a year without food! There is very few qualified exterminators and the cost is enourmous for most.

You can't begin to imagine the anguish and turmoil a bird mite infestation can cause! People have committed suicide over this. God forbid you to ever be inflicted with such a plague, but for those whose comments were anything less than sympathetic and supportive, shame on you! Perhaps a bird mite will come teach you a lesson in humility!

I once went to the E.R. and begged for help. Even when I produced several by coughing them out of my mouth, the arrogaunt Dr. Told me they were food particles! Even when I argued that I don't recall food particles running in my mouth, he did not send sample to lab. Even the attending nurse made some comment insinuating I was crazy. Im sure I was! Id had invisible bugs running all over me for 4 mos.! However, without a history of mental illness, or drug abuse they had an obligation to help me. I came to the E.R. because I felt it was an emergency! If the Dr. Didn't have an answer he should have referred me to someone else, Not deem me crazy and send me on my way with a $500 e.r. visit that I had no health insurance to pay for!

You need to see a Physician that specializes in infectious disease. You can likely find one at your local university hospital that also has studied parasitial infections and has some entomology (the scientific study of insects) education.

Sean,
I sympathize with your mother. For the past 10 months I have had a similar problem. Some type of mite that is smaller than a grain of salt. Doctors are quick to label you as delusional when it is something that they have little knowledge of. I exhausted my $2500 deductible and still no answers. I was put on antidepressants. It is to the point where I am embarrassed to go to the doctor now. They never bothered to look at samples at chick or even examined me that closely. Most exterminators are not even equipped to deal with Mites. My next step is to go to an entomologist. People do not understand. Mites are not necessarily the result of poor hygiene or bad housekeeping. In my case I think they came from a mouse my cat brought in that died under the refrigerator. Best of luck to your mother.
