I used to go to D&D as a kid, when the old owners Joe and Helen ran it. Back then the place was a top notch local Italian joint, with the likes of Joe Namath and Mark Gastino frequenting the place. It was sold to a very arrogant Greek family in the mid 80s, who turned it into a glorified diner. I worked there as a teen under the new owners. The husband, Louie I believe his name was, was a decent guy, drunk most of the time, but kind. The younger son, Spiro, was mostly tolerable, although he had an inflated sense of self worth because his parents owned a restaurant and bought him and his d*uche bag brother, George, new Corvettes at age 17. The Mom, Van, was a mean spirited, cocky, drunk, who cared about no one, except maybe her lap dog son George, who was as insufferable as she was.
They managed to keep it going through the 80s until the old owners' crowd started dying off, literally. Then they tried to send the younger son, Spiro, to culinary school, and designate him "master chef"--this was the beginning of the end. Sadly, the husband became wheel chair bound do to a stroke, the mom drank herself half blind at the bar every night, and the kids Corvettes were eventually traded in for mid-priced sedans.
Place had a history, but its time had come.
This is so bizarre; the place was never sold to other owners; it stayed in the family. As far as the culinary school, the son went to the Culinary Institute of America; one of the best culinary schools in the world. Some loser is saying all this negative stuff has some agenda. I went to D&D for 20 years and always had great food, great service, and never saw a dirty dish or any sign of anything bad. Great restaurant; Miss you guys !!

Michael, You have your facts wrong. Joe and Helen Hiedresco were a very Italian couple and friends of my family. They sold the place to Van and Louie (Greek) around 1983. They may have said they were part of the family, but trust me they were not. Sadly, Joe died when his plane caught on fire at Republic Airport shortly after they sold the restaurant. The food remained decent for a while, mostly because they kept the old Chef, Manny, who ran the kitchen, on board for many years after. The family's nepotism in insisting on having their son's run the kitchen, and their overall arrogance towards their customers (I personally observed the mother, Van, call the police on a customer wanted a rancid blue claw crab he ordered and had to send back taken off his bill, and refuse to bring a pillow to a customer having an epileptic seizure in the lobby), along with some factors outside their control, such as the out of the way location and the younger generations tilt towards trendy restaurants of the moment, brought the place to its end.

Ugh.. Went there once in the early 80s and thought the place was a dump.. Could not see the attraction. Did anyone take a look at the rug? Tell tale sign of a dirty place.

Massapequa is a white trash hell hole compared to Merrick ? Are you kidding me ? I have never seen so many people with raving substance abuse problems as I have from Merrick. Merrick is one of those towns where my skin crawls when someone mentions it. I left there at age 14 and never looked back. And the people who still live there are either drunks, crack heads, or barely got their GED's.

The Old Gal at Dick & Doras, thank god that Rat infested resturant is gone and plowed down. The place was going down the tubes for years - it fit in with the crack heads down Alhanbra Road.

parents went, I when I was younger, then me and my husband went and our kids went. Loved everything about D&D. Never saw a bug or rodent. Food was GREAT, atmosphere was quaint, people personable and nice. Rember their customers by name and I ordered my holiday food to be catered by them. I still havent found a place to cater that is even close or that even makes the same things on D&D catering menu. One of my favorite was the figitoni with alavolka sauce with jumbo shrimp and bruschetta. i couldnt find another place that had it on the menu. one catering place said theyd make it special order and i got tiny shrimp with pieces of ham and paid more. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE CHEIF FROM DICK & DORAS ????

I loved Dick & Dora's and dined there frequently back in the 1960's. In fact, I credit its cooking for the birth of my son, Martin, in 1965. He already was 2 weeks late, but labor started after his mother ate a big Italian meal at D&D's. We figured it helped grease his way out!

Joe and Helen were great people. Joe was a real-live hero who saved several hundred sailors at Pearl Harbor and used to fly a small plane around the Statue of Liberty dropping roses every December 7. His untimely death in a fueling accident was particularly tragic.

I'm sorry to hear that the restaurant went downhill later and am just as glad it was torn down. I'd rather remember it as it was in its heyday when it was one of the best Italian restaurants on Long Island.

So sorry to hear Dick and Dora"s is closed. I worked there in the Kitchen back when I was in High school 1971. I worked for Helen and Joe Have not been back to Long Island in about 10 years. It was a nice place to eat back in the days.

This is such sad news in so many ways. My family kept our boat at Zeiggie's across the street, where my Dad, "Killer Kane" was a member of their fishing club. We had many dinners at D&Ds in the 60's, and have many fond memories from both places. Alhambra beach is gone, Zeiggie's was torn down the year my Dad passed away, and now Dick&Doras. When we were going to D&Ds, the food was great, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the owners were like family. I don't know what happened in the later years to bring such hatred, but it is truely sad. Isn't progress such a wonderful thing?

30 years ago Dick and Dora's was a wonderful dining experience. The food was great and the restaurant was spotless. The previous owners worked extremely well at making your dining experience memorable. The very last owners were the ones who ran it into the ground.

My mother was a waitress there for years when Joe and Helen owned the restaurant. I tended bar there while I went to university in the late 60's, early 70's. Commuted home on the weekends; tips were that good! Helen was always kind to the employees, especially the younger college kids who worked there along side the veterans. Grew up in the Massapequa, Farmingdale area, and still visit occasionally, Long Island, like everything else, is not the same...You can't go home again.
