Over 800+ fire houses on Long Island, way to many, they get every amenity and piece of equipment and never use them. Them keep old equipment when they buy new ones in 3 years. Biggest waist of tax money, no one keeps eye on volleys who, what, where the funds go, if it is necessary to purchase and why so many fire houses in one town on LI?
No longer considered Volunteer Fireman around LI, they chill in Lavish and over the top firehouses with bars, pool tables, kegs and taps on call. The Volleys around LI get so many perks they no practically get paid for doing noting. Large Pensions, Large retirements, Free College, 30% reduction in homes taxes, Free Insurance, Free 1 week vacations paid every year, they get old equipment that was never used that tax payers funded and use of catering halls and large Banquet halls in these over the top fire houses for FREE. They even get college credits now, for being A,B or C Volley on LI NY

I've been a volunteer for 10 years and I agree with your views on over spending on facilities and equipment in general @ fire depts. There is a need for outside auditors to keep them honest as all tax payer $$$ are @ risk for abuse in all gov. agencies. BUT my dept does'nt have a lavish bar, I have never heard of the week vacation and we get 10% off of property tax from our primary res. in our fire dist. and our Pension is $20. per month for ea. year that we earn enough points for attending emergency calls, meetings and drills @ all hours of the night, all weather conditions and holidays. We can start collecting the pension @ 62 years of age and its paid for through an insurance Co. not the state pension fund and is equal to $400. per month starting @ the age of 62 if you made your service awrds for 20 YEARS. While your post has some merit it is tainted by your agenda to have paid fire depts on Long Island so that you dont have to drive to the city to work, and it cant be any safer or cheaper than the vol. system. That being said we are blessed with service of many professional NYFD and NYPD members as well as members form all other professions.
Thank You for the service of all members and have a Healthy, Happy and Wealthy New Year to all.
