Fine, you want to rent part of your house to some stranger...do it, but do it legally. File all the necessary papers with the Town, PAY THE FEE that is owed to rent the apartment, have LEGAL inspectors inspect the home every year. Why do the rules apply to only "other people"? That's the problem with America; everyone wants everyone ELSE to follow the rules but when it comes to themselves, no accountability, no responsibility. If you can't afford your house without a tenant, MOVE! We don't want you in this neighborhood anyway.

Your illegal apartment DOES affect costs in your town. There is more garbage, more recyclables, if the tenants have kids, more kids in the schools system whose parents are not paying tax, more parking on the street, most likely leaking oil and other fluid into the street which causes more road work to be done, parking in front of neighbors houses, etc. It's not just a no-consequence thing.

And you claim to rent to only responsible people or whatever you said, but believe me, not everyone does and I don't believe you either.

IF IT"S ILLEGAL, REPORT THEM!! Do it legally a-hole landlords! It IS my business; it affects my home!!
