Casino foes vow to continue fight

Developers of a Columbus casino approved in Tuesday's election pledged yesterday to win over skeptics with a first-class facility, even as calls increased for another ballot issue next year to "fix" the proposal.

Even though I voted against issue 3, I think it is wrong for politicians to try to undo what the people voted on and passed.
This will lead to people deciding not to vote at all.

It was a state-wide vote. Get over it. Do counties that voted against the smoking ban get to ignore it and keep smoking? Do neighborhoods that voted against the 1/2% Columbus tax increase get to keep paying 2%?

There is nothing good about Gambling.

It is done only because it makes some powerful people money....at the expense of the losers (who are most of the people).

Who cares if the people of low intelligence lose everything to this iniquity? Not even THEM....but their FAMILIES are at great disadvantage.

EVERYTHING about Gambling is Bad. And giving the percent to the State is just an evil trick....for the bad guys to get-in-the-door.

Actually....it would be wonderful if there was another Great Rebellion....and NOBODY VOTED. We, the people, never really choose anything (including Candidates).

The Big Guys choose WHO can run....and make you think Democracy "works".

The smoking ban could have been done as a local option, as the casino should have been. The income tax? As local as you can get. The turnout was what, 10-15%? Maybe the opponents to the income tax should have gotten out the vote.

The difference is that this is going to have greater repercussions. Smoking ban passed because it effected others. The tax increase was the first in 27 years and inflation has gone way up in that time. Central Ohio voters do not want this. Look at the mess at 70 and 71 every day. And we're going to put a casino down there?! This is going to be a NIGHTMARE for traffic. Our already stretched thin police force is going to have to be increased - who's going to pay for that? Local citizens that voted AGAINST this. Columbus has voted this down several times in the past, and these casinos circumvented our wants by putting it on a statewide ballot. I hope Coleman steps up and does the right thing.

At least it's a start but I agree that some changes need to be made. Ohio has lost a huge amount of money to neighboring states that do have casinos. The longer we wait until a casino is in operation, the more we lose. Profits will be taxed, employees will be taxed, sales tax on trinkets and baubles that the patrons might purchase. Beverage tax..... bed tax if a hotel is included.

If people want to toss their money away, I say go for it as long as it helps to reduce my tax liability.

Don't touch a thing politicans! The people voted for thousands of jobs and millions of tax revenue for our state. Get over it and move on or risk being un-elected by the people.
It is one casino in Columbus. The city is not turning into Las Vegas (where thousands of tourists visit every year, by the way). "Gambling is bad" - cry me a river. I think that losing jobs and being unable to pay your bills tears more families apart then the occasional gambler.

They have their claws in now, they have more money, the first shovel of dirt has not been turned to build them - but they will come. Gonna pass an amendment to the amendment now? Franklin County voters had it right. Casinos? OK. Casinos in the way the amendment was written? Bad. We just gave a bunch of filthy-rich scumbags the keys to the kingdom. Well done, voters of Ohio.

Agreed. But those who didn't care about the income tax vote are the same ones who aren't working anyway - they are busy collecting assistance in any form they can get it and waiting for our dear President to come riding in with ewven MORE freebies for them. If you don't have any income other than government handouts, who cares what they do with an INCOME tax? And those who are working and didn't vote on it? You get what others decide at that point.

Well, it will be in the Arena District, so thankfully it's right next to 670, 315 and 70. I will be concerned during hockey, baseball games and concerts. I guess just give yourself a little extra time.
Casino's hire their own security. And they usually patrol the area around the casino. can't see why it'd be any different. and duh, but if you're not in there spending money, you won't be paying for them.
I for one will be happy not to have to travel 2 hours away to spend MY MONEY! Yeah, that's right, my money. so all you peeps who are so againist casinos. It's my money and I'll spend it wherever I choose.

3-4 years from now when the casino finally opens, the market will have returned to normal (markets always trend towards equilibrium), and Ohio will not still feel desperate for jobs and revenue. This was a rash, "quick-fix" decision that people will regret.

Exactly.
Collective gullibility got us this loser deal.
At least the majority in Central Ohio showed better judgment, but despite our good sense, we still get stuck with a money-sucking, crime-inviting eyesore that most of us don't want here-?

Bring on the 'Not in Central Ohio' initiative- ANY initiative, WHATEVER it is, whatever it takes.
